What travels with you across state lines
Three IWU rules apply wherever you train. You need an active, unencumbered RN license for each state your sites sit in, clinicals happen in your own community, and IWU vets and approves every site and preceptor, in Indiana or anywhere else. IWU is an NC-SARA member and says it holds approvals or exemptions in every state where it enrolls online students.
IWU's 2022 professional licensure disclosures for its NP programs list the curriculum as meeting educational requirements in all 50 states, with extra steps noted for New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. A separate ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure, a PDF dated June 2024, confirms only five states (Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan) and leaves the other 45 as not yet determined. Questions IWU students ask
Can my IWU practicum site be outside Indiana?
IWU describes clinicals as done in the student's own community and requires an active RN license in the state of each practicum site. Its public pages name no excluded states. Check your program's licensure disclosure and your faculty's guidance before you commit to a site.
Do I need an RN license in the state where my preceptor practices?
Yes. The catalog ties your practicum to licensure: each state hosting one of your sites needs your active, unencumbered RN license, and no license you hold may carry an encumbrance. If you hold a multistate compact license, confirm with the board in the site's state that it covers you there.
Are any states closed to IWU NP students?
IWU publishes no such list, and the 2022 disclosures described above cover every state for its NP curricula. Some outside websites publish lists of their own that IWU has not confirmed, so ask IWU directly about your state before you apply or plan a site.
Do I still have to travel to Indiana?
Many IWU graduate students do, for residencies in Marion: an advanced health assessment residency for FNP students, a residency and two intensives for PMHNP students, and several residencies for DNP students. Your practicum hours themselves happen in your own community. See Marion residencies.
