Washington State: WABON approval comes before IWU clinicals
IWU's 2022 NP disclosures count Washington among the meets states, yet the state guards its clinical doors closely: a distance program from elsewhere must hold WABON approval before its students begin clinical hours there. Pin down IWU's standing first, then look for preceptors.

Washington in IWU's disclosures
IWU holds NC-SARA membership. Its September 30, 2022 disclosures place Washington among the meets states for both MSN nurse practitioner specialties, the matching post-master's certificates, and the BSN-to-DNP in FNP or PMHNP. For the ASN-to-MSN FNP, the June 2024 document says not yet determined. IWU keeps no public list of excluded states, and IWU admissions can confirm your program.

WABON's gate for programs from other states
The rule is WAC 246-840-571. A school running distance learning from outside Washington applies to WABON and proves its standards match Washington's. It then has to supervise and evaluate its students inside Washington, keep its national accreditation current and report every year. Only after approval can it send students to a Washington clinical or practice setting. WABON's roster of approved programs, dated September 21, 2026, includes RN-BSN, MSN and NP offerings.
WABON also limits these approved placements to students whose home is in Washington, weighing any exception individually. Its rules are under review: a CR-101 filed December 5, 2025 opened rulemaking across the education chapter, with clinical placement barriers on the agenda. This page could not confirm whether IWU is on the roster, so ask your program faculty before you invest time in a Washington site.
WABON ties approved out-of-state placements to Washington residency, so living across the border in Oregon or Idaho changes the picture.
Who may precept an ARNP student in Washington
Washington calls its nurse practitioners ARNPs. Whoever precepts an ARNP student must hold one of three licenses, ARNP, MD or DO, active and unencumbered, from Washington or an equivalent license from another state. Family ties and personal friendships disqualify a preceptor outright. Any faculty member from an out-of-state program who teaches ARNP practice inside Washington needs a Washington ARNP license. AANP rates Washington full practice, so ARNP preceptors work with no physician agreement.
IWU applies its own NP Clinical Guidelines and approves every preceptor, so screen for Washington's no-friends, no-relatives rule before you submit a name. Preceptor requirements shows what IWU looks at.
A preceptorship grant with an in-state condition
Washington does reward preceptors, through a grant the legislature set up and WABON runs. It pays ARNPs, RNs and LPNs who have practiced for a year or more, per student taught for at least 80 hours and no more than two students a term, with claims taken quarterly; the summer 2026 round closed September 15. ARNP students count in any round. WABON states plainly, though, that programs based outside Washington are ineligible even when every hour happens in the state, so precepting an IWU student earns nothing.
Puget Sound, Spokane, Clark County and the Tri-Cities
About 4.16 million people live in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro. Spokane-Spokane Valley has roughly 608,000, Kennewick-Richland about 324,000, and the Washington share of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro about 545,000. NP students often meet Providence, the Renton-based system that includes Providence Swedish, along with PeaceHealth, MultiCare Health System, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and UW Medicine. Those names map where care concentrates; none is presented as a site that has agreed to host IWU students.
RN licensing for Washington clinicals
IWU looks for an active, unencumbered RN license valid in the state of every practicum site. Washington came into the Nurse Licensure Compact late, with implementation on January 31, 2024; since then, Washington clinicals are covered by a Washington multistate license or by a multistate license from the compact state you live in. Is IWU on WABON's list of approved out-of-state programs?
That was not established for this page. WABON's roster, dated September 21, 2026, lists approved distance programs, NP tracks among them, and the state's rule requires approval before any placement. Check the roster and ask your program faculty how IWU handles Washington before arranging a site.
I live in Oregon but work in Vancouver, Washington. Can I train at my Washington job?
WABON reserves approved out-of-state placements for Washington residents and considers exceptions one case at a time. As an Oregon resident you would need that exception plus IWU's approval of the site, so raise it with your program faculty early. The workplace as clinical site page covers IWU's side.
Could an ARNP who is a close friend be my preceptor in Washington?
Washington's rules say no: an ARNP student's preceptor cannot be a relative or a personal friend. Past that point, the license question applies (ARNP, MD or DO, active and unencumbered, Washington-issued or an out-of-state equivalent), and IWU approves each preceptor against its own guidelines.
Are Washington's clinical placement rules about to change?
They might. WABON opened rulemaking on its nursing education rules with a CR-101 dated December 5, 2025, and its stated scope includes reducing barriers to clinical placement. Until any change takes effect, today's approval and residency conditions stand, so plan around them and keep an eye on WABON's education page.
