IWU nursing programs and the clinical hours each one needs
Each IWU nursing program asks for a different kind of practicum, from 850 primary care hours and 800 encounters in the MSN FNP to a single capstone practicum in the RN-to-BSN. The table gives the catalog figures, and the program guides below explain the courses, residencies and preceptors behind them.

The preceptor each program needs
NP students secure their own preceptors and sites, which IWU vets and approves. Health Systems Leadership students complete a capstone practicum at a location they choose, and MSN/MBA and Post-MBA students need the practicum agency's permission before hours start. We match each program with the right kind of preceptor: primary care clinicians for FNP, psychiatric providers for PMHNP, nurse leaders for HSL and DNP work, and master's-prepared nurses for Nursing Education.

Questions IWU students ask
Which IWU nursing programs need a preceptor or practicum site?
Practice experiences run through every IWU National & Global nursing program, and the catalog says each one depends on a clinical facility or a preceptor. NP, DNP, leadership and education students complete supervised practicum hours, and RN-to-BSN students complete a capstone practicum. Marion BSN students are placed by IWU.
Does IWU offer an adult-gerontology or pediatric NP track?
No. The 2026-27 catalog lists two NP specialties, Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, offered as an MSN, an ASN-to-MSN, a post-graduate certificate or a BSN-to-DNP.
Can DNP practicum hours come from my MSN?
For the post-master's DNP in Systems Leadership, IWU's program page allows up to 500 of the 1,000 practicum hours to transfer from master's-level clinical experience. The catalog states the 1,000-hour floor but not the transfer limit, so get your transfer figure confirmed by the program.
How long do IWU's NP programs take?
IWU's program data lists 28 months for the MSN FNP and MSN PMHNP, 26 months for the PMHNP certificate, about 48 months for the BSN-to-DNP and 41 or more months for the ASN-to-MSN FNP. Each program is taken one course at a time, lock-step.
