IWU MSN Health Systems Leadership: the 520 practicum hours and where to earn them
IWU's Health Systems Leadership degrees (the MSN, the ASN-to-MSN, the Post-MBA MSN and the MSN/MBA dual degree) share one practicum load: 520 supervised hours across seven courses, ending in a 130-hour capstone. The post-graduate HSL certificate carries 260. You secure the practicum sites, and IWU's School of Nursing approves them.

Which HSL route are you on?
Five IWU programs draw on the same leadership practicum courses. Credits, length and format differ, so start by placing yourself:
- MSN in Health Systems Leadership: 34 credits (12 core, 22 HSL), about 24 months over 14 courses, online, with a capstone practicum at a location you choose; undergraduate GPA 3.0
- ASN-to-MSN HSL: 51 credits in the catalog (53 on the web page), about 36 months over 20 courses
- Post-MBA MSN: 30 credits for applicants who already hold an MBA, with 520 hours of supervised onsite practicum
- MSN/MBA dual degree: 60 credits (30 nursing, 30 business), about 36 months, courses of 2 to 10 weeks taken one at a time, no residency, starts in March, June and December
- Post-graduate HSL certificate: 19 credits, about 260 practicum hours over four courses, 100% online in 8-week courses, about 9 months, starts in January, May and August
IWU names no certification exam for any HSL route. The ASN-to-MSN version adds 17 bridge credits first; the ASN-to-MSN page explains that stage.
The seven practicum courses
Each practicum course carries a P suffix and pairs with a lecture course of the same number, taken alongside or before it. Hours come from IWU's 2026-27 course pages.

The seven courses add up to exactly 520 hours, matching IWU's web figure, so this track has no hour conflict to untangle. The certificate uses the four middle courses, HSL-680P through HSL-686P, for its 260. HSL practicum courses looks at each course more closely.
Order and prerequisites
The two GNUR practicums come first. Both require GNUR-501 Evidence Based Communication, and each runs with its lecture course (GNUR-529 or GNUR-532) as a co-requisite or prerequisite. HSL-680P then requires the GNUR core plus both GNUR practicums, and each later HSL practicum pairs with its own lecture course.
HSL-688P sits at the end and requires every prior HSL and practicum course. At 130 hours it is twice the size of the others and built as an immersion, so it deserves the most careful site choice of the program.
Because hours are tied to specific courses, a site that falls through mid-course affects that course's grade, not just your running total. IWU's catalog also treats falsified practicum hours as grounds for immediate dismissal from its master's nursing programs, with no re-entry.

Who secures the site, and how approval works
IWU's MSN/MBA page says students identify and secure their own clinical sites, and the School of Nursing must approve them. The MSN HSL page describes the capstone practicum as happening at a location the student chooses. For the Post-MBA MSN, IWU adds a specific step: get the practicum agency's permission before logging any hours.
The HSL certificate page says its practicum hours usually take place at the student's workplace or another approved setting. Your workplace as a clinical site covers what makes that arrangement work.
IWU's recent catalogs name Medatrax for site and preceptor approvals and compliance items, so ask faculty which items your leadership practicum requires, and by when. You must meet any requirements the practicum agency sets at your own expense, and hold an active, unencumbered RN license in each state where you do practicum work. See how IWU approves preceptors.
Choosing sites and preceptors for leadership hours
The course focus tells you what each placement needs. GNUR-529P fits a public health department, community program or population health team. HSL-682P suits a unit or service line working on safe work environments, HSL-684P an interprofessional team, and HSL-686P a leader with visible responsibility for budgets, staffing or technology.
IWU does not publish preceptor qualifications for the HSL practicums. In practice, look for experienced nurse leaders (managers, directors, quality or population health leaders) whose daily work matches the course, and confirm with faculty before you ask anyone to commit.
For the capstone, pick a setting with a real problem you can address through an evidence-based project and a leader who will back its implementation. That may be your own organization, though a different system can give you a broader view of how leaders work.
Costs and accreditation
The catalog's Nursing Practice Experience Costs policy applies to every IWU National & Global nursing program: any cost of a clinical or practicum placement is the student's. Agency requirements add to that, so weigh both when you compare possible sites; a site with extra onboarding steps also takes longer to start; placement costs at IWU explains the policy.
CCNE accredits IWU's master's nursing program, and its current term runs to June 30, 2030. IWU's CCNE statement covers its post-graduate APRN certificates, and the HSL certificate is not an APRN program. If your employer asks about the certificate's accreditation, get IWU's answer in writing.

The MSN totals 520 practicum hours. Six practicum courses carry 65 hours each, and the HSL-688P capstone carries 130. Can I complete IWU HSL practicum hours at my own job?
Often, yes. IWU's HSL certificate page says practicum hours usually take place at the student's workplace or another approved setting, and the MSN capstone is at a location you choose. Every site still needs School of Nursing approval, and some courses benefit from exposure beyond your own unit.
Does IWU's MSN/MBA require a campus residency?
No. IWU's MSN/MBA page lists no residency. Courses run 2 to 10 weeks, one at a time, over about 36 months, with starts in March, June and December. The 520 practicum hours take place at student-secured sites approved by the School of Nursing.
Who can precept an IWU Health Systems Leadership practicum?
IWU does not publish preceptor qualifications for the HSL practicums. The course descriptions point toward experienced nurse leaders whose work matches each course, from population health to finance and staffing. Ask your course faculty what they expect before approaching a preceptor, and keep their answer in writing.
Do I need permission from the agency before starting HSL practicum hours?
For the Post-MBA MSN, IWU says so explicitly: get the practicum agency's permission before any hours begin.
