IWU's onsite residencies in Marion, program by program
IWU's graduate nursing programs run online, yet most of them bring you to Indiana for short onsite stretches. FNP students attend a health assessment residency, PMHNP students add a pair of intensives, the BSN-to-DNP FNP catalog entry counts four residencies and the Systems Leadership DNP three of up to four days each. Treat the travel as your own expense and build every trip into your clinical calendar early.

IWU's catalog and its program web pages describe the onsite pieces a little differently, and for two programs they disagree outright. The table sets the sources side by side so you see the whole picture before you ask faculty for your cohort's dates.

No agenda, timetable or hour credit for these visits appears in IWU's public material. Dates and expectations reach you through course faculty once your cohort's calendar is set, which is why the planning steps below begin with getting the date in writing.
FNP: one health assessment residency
For Family Nurse Practitioner students the onsite requirement belongs to PYC-660 Advanced Health Assessment, the first of five FNP clinical courses. Both the MSN FNP catalog entry and its ASN-to-MSN twin require the advanced health assessment residency onsite. IWU's FNP certificate FAQ fills in the shape: a single weekend in Marion while you are enrolled in the Assessment course.
Certificate students meet a softer line in their own catalog entry, which says they may need to attend. The certificate treats advanced health assessment as a prerequisite with more than one route, including IWU competency exams or current APRN certification with recent practice. If you qualify by one of those routes, ask faculty whether the weekend still applies before you plan around it.

PMHNP: a residency and two intensives
Psychiatric-mental health students spend more time onsite than FNP students do. The MSN PMHNP and ASN-to-MSN PMHNP catalog entries each call for a health assessment residency and a pair of onsite intensives, over and above the 820 practicum hours. IWU's MSN PMHNP web page adds psychiatric evaluations run as live OSCEs with trained actors.
The course pages show where one intensive lands. PMHN-693 Interprofessional Development for the PMHNP, a 1-credit course at the end of the PMHNP list, pairs 35 clinical hours with an onsite intensive built around interprofessional simulation. The post-graduate PMHNP certificate phrases its onsite pieces as a health assessment residency plus a residency in the final course.
One gap is worth closing early. The PMHNP catalog entries call these requirements onsite without naming a venue, while IWU's FNP and DNP pages place their residencies on the Marion campus. DNP residencies and where IWU's sources differ
Doctoral students make the most trips. In the BSN-to-DNP FNP catalog entry the count is four: a trio of project residencies and a fourth devoted to FNP education. IWU's web page for the program counts three, linked to orientation, the project proposal and the project's closing presentation.
The PMHNP doctoral track is harder to read. One catalog sentence says three onsite residencies, and a later one describes three for the project plus two for PMHNP education. The web page settles on three residencies plus a two-day intensive onsite during DNP-793, the last course. Both BSN-to-DNP tracks also blend onsite workshops with interactive online ones, and an NP practicum course is failed outright once a student misses a second workshop.
The post-master's Systems Leadership DNP is the clearest. Its web page describes three Marion campus residencies, none longer than four days, with travel at the student's expense. A separate global healthcare requirement involves domestic or international travel, where each student selects a local, domestic or international immersion and funds it; that immersion is not a Marion visit. Where the catalog and a web page disagree on your residency count, plan around the larger number until faculty confirm your cohort's schedule in writing.
Getting to Marion and paying for it
IWU's residential campus sits at 4201 S. Washington St. in Marion. IWU National & Global also uses the Marion Education and Conference Center at 1886 W 50th St, a separate site that serves as its mailing address. When your residency details arrive, check which of the two they name before you reserve a hotel.
On cost, the catalog policy titled Nursing Practice Experience Costs leaves clinical placement expenses with the student, and the Systems Leadership DNP page says outright that residency travel is paid by the student. Students in Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky may find the drive manageable. If you live farther away, price flights as soon as dates are posted, because a residency can fall in the middle of a clinical course when your weekly clinic hours matter most.
Fitting a residency around your preceptor
A residency pulls you out of your community clinic, often mid-course with an hour target to hit. A few deliberate steps keep both commitments on track.
- Get the date from facultyAsk course faculty for the residency or intensive date as soon as your cohort's schedule is posted, and keep their reply.
- Tell your preceptor before the course opensShare your travel dates at the first conversation so the clinic can plan patient schedules around your absence.
- Rebalance the clinical weeksAdd clinic time in the weeks before and after the trip so the days away leave no shortfall at the end of the course.
- Arrange cover at workRequest leave for travel days as well as residency days, since a four-day DNP residency can take most of a working week.
- Keep compliance currentCheck that clearances and approvals stay valid while you travel, especially when a practicum course opens close to the trip.

Questions IWU students ask
Do IWU's online NP students have to go to campus?
Yes, for short periods. The online FNP and PMHNP programs each include an onsite residency in advanced health assessment, PMHNP students add two onsite intensives, and the DNP programs include several residencies. Everything else runs online in Brightspace, and your clinical hours are completed with a preceptor in your own community.
How long is an IWU residency?
IWU publishes a length only for the Systems Leadership DNP, whose web page says each of its three residencies lasts four days or less. The FNP certificate FAQ describes the health assessment residency as a weekend, and the BSN-to-DNP PMHNP intensive in DNP-793 runs two days. For any other visit, course faculty set the length for your cohort.
Does residency time count toward my IWU clinical hours?
Nothing public from IWU settles it. The catalog lists residencies as program requirements next to the practicum-hour totals, yet no source credits residency days as supervised clinical hours, and PMHN-693 lists its 35 hours and its onsite intensive as separate items. Ask course faculty before you enter any residency time in your log.
Who pays for travel to IWU residencies?
Plan on covering it yourself. The Systems Leadership DNP page states that residency travel is the student's expense, and IWU's placement-cost policy leaves clinical placement expenses with students too. Set aside money for transport, lodging and meals, and arrange time off work well before the dates arrive.
Do IWU DNP students travel anywhere besides Marion?
Yes. The Systems Leadership DNP includes a global healthcare requirement with domestic or international travel, and students choose a local, domestic or international immersion at their own expense. In the catalog, the immersion course DNP-830 (Cultural Immersion in Health Systems) can be regional, national or overseas, while DNP-835 Healthcare Across Cultures, used in both BSN-to-DNP tracks, stays regional.
