Certificate structure and timeline
The certificate is 32 credits: PYC-602 Professional Role Development for the Advanced Practice Nurse plus all eight PMHN courses. Two prerequisites, PYC-614 Advanced Pathophysiology and PYC-612 Advanced Pharmacology, add 8 more credits. Nurses who already hold NP certification have PYC-602 waived, which trims the load for an FNP or other NP adding the psychiatric population.
IWU's program data lists 26 months over 8 courses, and the certificate's web page describes it as just two years, mostly online. Coursework is delivered online, one course at a time, while the practicum hours happen in your own community with a preceptor IWU has approved.
The certificate is CCNE-accredited as one of IWU's post-graduate APRN certificate programs, and CCNE's current term for those programs runs to mid-2030. Ask IWU which certification boards it recommends for certificate completers before your final course, so your hour records are organized the way the board expects.
Meeting the prerequisites
Pathophysiology and pharmacology can be met the same three ways IWU allows on its FNP certificate. Option one is the IWU course itself, passed with at least a B no more than a year before you start. Option two is IWU's competency exams. Option three is an active APRN certification backed by 500 practice hours as an APRN over the last year.
The third route matters most to practicing NPs, since it can clear both prerequisites without new coursework. Confirm your route with an advisor before the first term, because it sets the date your first practicum course opens, and that date drives when you need a preceptor confirmed.
Unlike the FNP certificate, advanced health assessment is not a prerequisite here. It is built into the certificate as PMHN-652, a 75-hour practicum course with its own onsite residency, so your clinical hours begin with the first PMHN course that carries them.

The two residencies
The certificate's catalog entry calls for two onsite residencies: one in advanced health assessment and one in the final course. IWU's course page for PMHN-693 confirms an onsite intensive alongside its interprofessional simulation work.
The program text does not print dates or a location. IWU's FNP residency weekend and its DNP residencies are held on the Marion, Indiana campus, so plan for travel, and get exact dates from faculty early enough to arrange time away from work and from your practicum site. Under the catalog's Nursing Practice Experience Costs policy, costs connected to your practice experiences are yours, and travel is part of that. Marion residencies lists the onsite requirements across programs.
Finding psychiatric preceptors and clearing approval
IWU's NP rule, which it publishes with the FNP certificate and applies to every NP track, reads: "Students are responsible for securing clinical sites and preceptors." You identify the psychiatric preceptor and site, working with program faculty, and submit the documentation IWU requests. The university vets and approves each placement before hours count.
IWU's recent catalogs name Medatrax for approvals, health requirements and compliance education, and say a student whose items are still outstanding once a practicum course enters its second week can be dismissed. Before any patient contact, APRN students clear a repeat criminal background check and a drug screen, document health clearance and immunizations, and meet any requirement the site adds; immunizations and health clearance covers what that usually involves.
Preceptor qualifications, form names and approval times are not public. Look them up in IWU's NP Clinical Guidelines and handbooks before you approach a preceptor.
Matching preceptors to each PMHN course
IWU sets no published setting rules for PMHNP hours, so match each preceptor to what the course asks. The foundations course needs someone who will let you conduct and document psychiatric interviews. The three psychotherapeutic modalities courses need a steady therapy caseload: individual patients first, then family and group work, then clients with multiple conditions.
If you already practice as an NP in primary care, look hard at whether your current setting offers structured psychotherapy. Medication follow-ups alone will not match the course descriptions for PMHN-630 through PMHN-650. IWU also publishes no limits on telehealth or inpatient hours, so ask faculty before counting either toward a course.
