IWU students reach a preceptor by one of three routes: searching alone, working leads with program faculty, or using a placement service. Every route ends at the same point, IWU's review and approval of the site and preceptor. What differs is how much of your time each one takes, how it copes with a dead end and how complete your file is when it reaches IWU.

Where every route starts
IWU's rule is the same whichever route you take. The FNP certificate page makes the student responsible for securing clinical sites and preceptors: you work with program faculty, identify possible preceptors and sites, and send in documentation, after which the university vets and approves each one.
Clinicals happen in your own community and begin early in the program, so IWU advises lining up preceptors well ahead. Its public pages describe no placement office, site database or paid placement option for online graduate students. So the real choice is how you secure a preceptor, since securing one is a given.

Searching on your own
A solo search works best when you already have a way in. If you work alongside NPs or physicians who enjoy teaching, one conversation can settle a course. IWU also describes workplace practicums as possible when they meet faculty-oversight, learning-objective and preceptor-qualification requirements; the workplace site page covers the conditions.
Starting cold is harder. IU Health strongly discourages students from cold-calling or walking in on its preceptors and routes NP students through its own application database. Franciscan Health and Deaconess take students only from schools with an affiliation agreement, and Deaconess says it is not currently pursuing new affiliations. Time is the other cost. IWU's FNP certificate FAQ estimates 10 to 15 hours of coursework a week plus clinical hours, with weekly deadlines in every course, and every call and follow-up has to fit around that.
Working leads with program faculty
Program faculty belong in every route, and they are the right first conversation. IWU says students work with program faculty to secure placements, and faculty know what each course expects. In FNP clinical courses they also visit sites and run evaluations, which gives them a direct view of what makes a site work.
Faculty input is direction rather than placement. The student still identifies the preceptor and makes the arrangements. Students report the same on third-party review sites; one reviewer described receiving preceptor suggestions but arranging everything, travel included.
Use faculty leads whichever route you choose. Bring them the candidates you find, ask whether a setting suits the course and keep them posted on your timeline.

Questions IWU students ask
Can I start searching myself and bring you in later?
Yes, and it is a common path. Send your placement advisor a list of who you already contacted and how each one answered, so outreach picks up where yours stopped and skips repeat calls. We can also prepare the approval file for a preceptor you found on your own.
Does IWU review a preceptor found through a service differently?
IWU's public pages describe a single process: the student submits documentation, and the university vets and approves each site and preceptor. What counts in that review is the preceptor's qualifications and the site's fit with the course, which IWU sets out in documents such as the NP Clinical Guidelines. A complete file helps the review go smoothly.
Should I tell my program faculty I am using a placement service?
Keeping faculty informed is always wise. They answer questions about course expectations, and in FNP clinical courses they visit your site. Share the preceptor's name and site with them as you would with any lead, and follow whatever steps your syllabus or the NP Clinical Guidelines set for submissions.
Is doing clinicals at my own workplace easier?
It can be, if the setting fits the course and IWU's conditions. An IWU article describes workplace practicums as possible when faculty oversight, learning objectives and preceptor qualifications are met. Think too about whether you can step out of your usual role there and learn as a student, since that shapes what you get from the hours.
What if a faculty lead falls through close to my start date?
