The catalog files this degree as the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialization inside IWU's Primary Care Nursing major, awarded as a Master of Science in Nursing. It totals 49 credits. IWU's program data puts it at about 28 months over 14 courses, and the catalog caps completion at four years.

Order of study and progression
The PMHNP major follows a prescribed sequence. The catalog does not list prerequisites for individual PMHN courses because the order itself does that work: you take them as IWU schedules them, one course at a time.
IWU's master's progression rules apply in full. Major courses need a B or better, a failed course leads to administrative withdrawal, and a second unsatisfactory grade means dismissal. With 175 hours packed into each of the three psychotherapy courses, a site that starts late or ends early can leave a course short, and there is no parallel course to absorb the gap. Hours must also be logged honestly. The catalog treats falsified clinical or practicum hours as grounds for immediate dismissal, with no re-entry to IWU's master's nursing programs.
Securing preceptors and getting IWU's approval
IWU's NP rule, published on its FNP certificate page and applied across the nurse practitioner tracks, reads: "Students are responsible for securing clinical sites and preceptors." Faculty support you along the way, yet you are the one who identifies the psychiatric preceptor and site. You submit the documentation, and the university vets and approves each placement.
IWU's recent catalogs route three things through Medatrax: approvals of sites and preceptors, health requirements, and compliance education. The deadline has teeth, since anything still outstanding when a practicum course reaches its second week can lead to dismissal. Before any patient contact you also finish a repeat background check and drug screen, plus health clearance and TB, rubella, MMR, flu and hepatitis B records. On request, IWU may share those records with your site.

What a good PMHNP placement looks like
IWU publishes no setting rules for PMHNP hours, so the course descriptions are your best guide. PMHN-628 builds interviewing and documentation. PMHN-630 centers on individual patients, PMHN-640 moves into family and group therapy across settings, and PMHN-650 asks for diverse clients with multiple conditions.
In practice that points toward placements where you do psychotherapy, not only medication visits. A preceptor who runs individual therapy sessions suits PMHN-630; a practice with family or group work fits PMHN-640; a caseload with complex, co-occurring conditions serves PMHN-650. A preceptor with a broad caseload may be able to cover more than one course; confirm that with faculty before you plan around it.
