The RN license rule for IWU clinicals
Wherever you train, IWU expects an active, unencumbered RN license that is valid in that site's state, and every license you hold, current or inactive, must stay unencumbered. Lose that status and IWU withdraws you administratively. This page shows how the rule plays out across programs, compact states and state lines, and how we plan placements around the licenses you already hold.

The rule in plain terms
IWU's catalog links three conditions. For each state that hosts one of your practicum sites, you need an RN license there that is active and carries no encumbrance. Every nursing license you hold, current or inactive, has to be unencumbered. And if you lose that status during the program, the result is administrative withdrawal.
The rule follows the site, not your mailing address. Live in one state and train in another, and your license has to be good where the patients are; split your sites across two states, and you need authority in each.
Admission already assumes a clean record: the NP tracks ask that every license be unencumbered before you start. The practicum-state test then applies each time you add a new site.
How each IWU program words it
The wording is close to identical across IWU National & Global, with small differences worth knowing if you compare pages.

Compact licenses: where a multistate license reaches, and where it stops
Under the Nurse Licensure Compact, your home state issues one multistate license that also carries practice rights across the rest of the member states; the Ohio board's multistate page explains it in those terms. Our state research counts 40 states where the compact is implemented, including Indiana (since July 1, 2020), Kentucky and Ohio.
Several states close to IWU's student base sit outside it. Illinois and Michigan are not members, New York isn't either, and Massachusetts, which passed compact legislation in November 2024, has set May 2027 as its target start. Holding a multistate license issued in Indiana or Ohio adds nothing at an Illinois clinic, so an Illinois site calls for an Illinois RN license.
At an Indiana site, IWU's rule is met by an Indiana RN license or a multistate compact RN license. The catalog doesn't mention the compact by name, so for a site in another compact state, confirm with program faculty how a multistate license is treated before you commit.
Border sites and metro areas that cross state lines
If you live in a metro area that spans state lines, the strongest site nearby may sit across the border. The Louisville metro reaches into southern Indiana, Cincinnati's spans Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, and Chicago's takes in northwest Indiana. Before you say yes to a site on the far side of a line, confirm that both your license and your preceptor's work in that state.
Kentucky's board says out-of-state programs need no approval from it. It also cites a statute exempting nurses licensed in other states while they complete a Kentucky clinical rotation, as long as their school is a SARA member or holds a Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education license. IWU is a SARA member and has that council's approval.
Treat state exemptions like that one as sitting alongside IWU's rule, not replacing it. The catalog requirement is the one IWU enforces, so plan on meeting it in every state where you train.
Unencumbered means every license, including the ones you no longer use
IWU applies the unencumbered test to each nursing license you hold, current or inactive, not only the one you use for clinicals. A license from a state you left years ago is still part of the picture, so list every one when IWU or a site asks.
Losing unencumbered status at any point leads to administrative withdrawal. If a board matter is open anywhere, raise it with program faculty straight away rather than waiting for a site or a reviewer to find it.
Your license history follows you after graduation too. When you apply for APRN prescriptive authority in Indiana, the Professional Licensing Agency asks for verification of every state license you have ever held, through Nursys. Knowing how your record reads there now saves surprises later.
Your preceptor's license matters as well
IWU's public catalog doesn't list preceptor credentials; those live in the NP Clinical Guidelines, and our preceptor requirements guide gathers what IWU does publish. State rules can add to them. For online MSN and DNP programs, Kentucky's board expects anyone precepting or overseeing an APRN student in the state to carry a Kentucky APRN license, plus a Kentucky RN license unless that person lives in a compact state.
Illinois's program-approval rules say a facility preceptor must be licensed as an RN in the state where the student is providing care, though that section doesn't say whether it reaches graduate programs based elsewhere. Indiana has no rule on record that requires an NP student's preceptor to hold an Indiana license as such, but anyone practicing in Indiana needs Indiana authority, and APRNs who prescribe need a collaborative practice agreement. IWU approves; we make sure its reviewers receive a complete file that fits the rules on first read. If a preceptor drops out mid-course, we find a replacement inside the same licensing footprint.

Questions IWU students ask
Do I need an Indiana RN license to study at IWU online?
Not unless you train in Indiana. IWU ties your license to the state of each practicum site, so an Ohio student with Ohio sites needs valid Ohio authority rather than an Indiana license. If any of your sites are in Indiana, you need an Indiana RN license or a multistate compact RN license, and every license you hold must be unencumbered.
Does my compact license cover IWU clinicals in Illinois or Michigan?
No. Neither Illinois nor Michigan has joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, which means a multistate license issued in Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky carries no practice rights in either state. Michigan has compact legislation pending (HB 4246), but until a state actually implements the compact, plan on holding that state's own RN license for any site you use there.
Does moving states in the middle of an IWU program change my license needs?
It can. Before you log hours at a site in your new state, your license must be valid there, and the new site and preceptor go through IWU's approval like any other. Moving can also change your compact position, because a multistate license is issued by your primary state of residence. Talk to program faculty before the move, not after it.
What happens if my RN license is disciplined while I'm enrolled?
IWU's catalog says every license you hold must remain unencumbered, and losing that status leads to administrative withdrawal from the program. How IWU reviews individual cases isn't published. If a board matter arises, contact program faculty promptly and keep your own records of how it is resolved.
Can my preceptor be licensed in a different state from me?
Your preceptor needs authority to practice where the site is, and some states set extra rules for preceptors of out-of-state students, Kentucky among them. IWU's own preceptor criteria sit in the NP Clinical Guidelines. The test that matters is simple: your license and your preceptor's must both be valid in the state where the site operates.
