IWU ASN-to-MSN: the bridge courses, then your MSN clinicals
IWU's ASN-to-MSN takes an associate-degree RN to a Master of Science in Nursing in one program. Every route opens with 17 undergraduate bridge credits and then joins the matching MSN with its full practicum load: 850 hours for FNP, 820 for PMHNP, 520 for Health Systems Leadership and 175 for Nursing Education.

How the bridge works
The bridge is five undergraduate courses: NUR-338, NUR-342, NUR-382, NUR-432 and NUR-462, worth 17 credits together. On the FNP route, the catalog asks for a C or better in each bridge course and a GPA of at least 3.25 before you move into graduate work.
Admission to the FNP route starts from an associate degree earned at a CCNE-, ACEN- or CNEA-accredited school, with a GPA of 3.0. Study is online and runs one course at a time, and IWU's program pages say clinicals can be done in your own community. Course format and calendar explains the modular schedule.
One detail surprises people. The PMHNP catalog entry states that this route awards the MSN only, not a BSN. IWU does not say the same about the other three routes, so ask admissions how your chosen track handles the bachelor's credential if that matters for your employer.
The four routes side by side
After the bridge, each track follows the same graduate courses and practicum requirements as the MSN it leads to. Credits and lengths come from the catalog and IWU's program data.

The NP hour figures carry the same conflicts as the MSN. On the FNP side, the program web page gives 700 hours where the catalog gives 850; on the PMHNP side, the web page gives 525 against the catalog's 820, with the course pages adding up to 785. Use the catalog figure and confirm in each syllabus. The FNP route must be finished within five years.
Grades and pace once you reach graduate work
The graduate half of each route is lock-step. Courses go in IWU's prescribed order, and graduate major courses need at least a B. Fail one and IWU withdraws you administratively; collect a second unsatisfactory grade and you are dismissed.
Because the bridge fills the first stretch of the program, it is easy to treat clinicals as a distant problem. They arrive sooner than the calendar suggests. On the FNP route, PYC-660 Advanced Health Assessment is the first clinical course, and it includes the onsite residency. On the PMHNP route, PMHN-652 opens with 75 hours. Use your bridge months to plan who will precept you and where.
Falsified clinical or practicum hours end a student's IWU master's studies on the spot, with no way back in, so accurate logs matter from the first shift.
NP routes: the RN hours rule, preceptors and approval
Both nurse practitioner routes set an experience floor of 500 or more hands-on RN patient care hours in the year leading up to admission; the 500-hour rule explains how that plays out. Both also require licensure in the state where you do practicum work.
IWU's FNP certificate FAQ, which shares its PYC courses with this route, sets the NP rule: "Students are responsible for securing clinical sites and preceptors." You find the candidate with faculty support, submit the documentation, and the School of Nursing approves. IWU's recent catalogs use Medatrax for those approvals plus health requirements and compliance education, and warn that anyone who has not submitted by week two of a practicum course faces possible dismissal.
Onsite time differs by track. The FNP route adds the health-assessment residency; the PMHNP route adds that residency plus two onsite intensives. Full detail for each is on the MSN FNP page and the MSN PMHNP page.
Leadership and education routes: practicum sites
The Health Systems Leadership route spreads 520 hours across seven practicum courses: six of 65 hours and the HSL-688P capstone of 130. IWU's HSL page says the capstone practicum takes place at a location you choose.
The Nursing Education route is lighter on hours but specific about people. NRE-664 places you in a clinical nursing practice area for 35 hours with a master's-prepared preceptor, and NRE-695 adds 140 supervised hours in varied educational settings. IWU notes graduates of this route can sit for the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) exam.

A special check for the ASN-to-MSN FNP: state disclosures
IWU's professional licensure disclosure for the ASN-to-MSN FNP, a PDF dated June 2024, lists only five states where the curriculum meets educational requirements: Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. The other 45 states are marked "not yet determined".
That label means IWU had not reached a conclusion for those states, not that the program fails them. It still matters for clinical planning, because you train where you live and will seek licensure there. The ASN-to-MSN PMHNP has no posted disclosure at all. If you live outside those five states, ask IWU in writing how your state is treated before your first clinical, and read IWU's licensure disclosures for the full picture.

Does IWU's ASN-to-MSN award a BSN along the way?
The PMHNP route's catalog entry says it awards the MSN only, not a BSN. IWU's public pages do not state the answer for the FNP, Health Systems Leadership or Nursing Education routes. If an employer or future program needs proof of a bachelor's degree, ask IWU admissions before you enroll.
How long does IWU's ASN-to-MSN FNP take?
IWU's program data lists 41 or more months over 16 courses for the 66-credit FNP route, and the catalog sets a five-year completion limit. The PMHNP route runs about 45 months across 19 courses. In a lock-step program, a clinical course that cannot start on time pushes everything after it back, so a preceptor lined up in advance protects that timeline.
Do IWU ASN-to-MSN NP students need RN experience first?
Yes. The FNP and PMHNP routes both require at least 500 hours of direct patient care as an RN during the year before admission. Count your hours carefully before applying, since the window is the prior year only, not your whole career.
Which ASN-to-MSN track has the fewest practicum hours?
Nursing Education. Its two practicum courses add up to 175 hours: 35 in NRE-664 with a master's-prepared preceptor and 140 in the NRE-695 capstone. Health Systems Leadership follows with 520, then PMHNP with 820 and FNP with 850 in the catalog.
Can I switch tracks during the ASN-to-MSN?
IWU's public catalog pages do not describe a track-change process for the ASN-to-MSN. The four routes share the same bridge courses, so the question usually comes up before graduate work begins. Speak with your advisor and program faculty, and confirm how any change affects credits, clinical hours and your completion limit.
