Finding NP preceptors in Indiana as an IWU student
Indiana's large health systems mostly take NP students through formal channels: application databases, set windows and school affiliation agreements. Independent practices and community health centers decide much closer to the ground. For an IWU student, knowing which door each one uses saves weeks of calls that go nowhere.

Two kinds of doors
Indiana preceptors reach IWU students by two broad routes. Health systems such as IU Health, Franciscan Health and Deaconess publish formal processes for advanced practice students, with applications, deadlines and school agreements. Smaller practices usually decide for themselves, often through the physician owner, the lead NP or the office manager.
Before using either route, check your license. IWU wants an active, unencumbered RN license for each state where a practicum site sits. For an Indiana site, that means an Indiana RN license or a multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact, which Indiana has joined. The RN license page covers the rule.
None of the system pages summarized below names IWU. Whether IWU holds an agreement with any particular system is a question for your program faculty.
IU Health: apply through its database
IU Health handles advanced practice student placements, NPs included, through its statewide Office of Clinical Education. Students register one account, complete a profile and apply each semester by clinical type in an online database. The office also confirms that an educational affiliation agreement is in place with the school.

IU Health strongly discourages cold-calling or walking in on its preceptors and describes this as a condition of its agreements with schools. Applying does not assure a spot, and students left unmatched may look outside the system. Accepted students complete online modules, with quarterly audits of insurance, vaccinations and BLS.
IWU's NP programs start in January, May and August rather than on a semester calendar, so map your course dates onto these windows months ahead.
Franciscan Health and Deaconess: agreement first
Franciscan Health offers NP rotations at its hospitals in Indianapolis, Mooresville and Carmel and within Franciscan Physician Network practices in central Indiana, each supervised by a preceptor. Its own employees get priority, and the student's school must hold a valid affiliation agreement. Pre-start items include CPR/AED, a national background check from the past 12 months, a TB test, a 5-panel drug screen, MMR and rubella titer, hepatitis B, varicella, tetanus/pertussis and a seasonal flu vaccine, followed by an Epic security access form and an orientation module.
Deaconess, based in Evansville, offers NP and PA rotations across its system. It asks for an active affiliation agreement, school-provided professional liability insurance, RN licensure as defined by Indiana's Professional Licensing Agency and US citizenship or permanent residency. Employees and students from local schools come first, and Deaconess says it is not currently pursuing new affiliations. Students apply each semester, by April 30 for fall, September 30 for spring and January 31 for summer, and compliance is tracked in myClinicalExchange.
Parkview and systems without a public route
Parkview Health's Education Services department arranges clinical learning at Parkview sites in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. College clinicals go to a department or an individual preceptor based on location preference and availability, through an online request form. Its pages describe no NP-specific process, so ask the education team how it handles advanced practice requests.
For Ascension St. Vincent and Eskenazi Health, our research turned up no public NP-student placement page, and Community Health Network's student page could not be checked directly. Treat each system's education office as the source of truth, and get any requirement in writing before you plan around it.
Community practices and health centers
Outside the big systems, many Indiana NPs work in settings that choose their own students. In the Bowen Center's 2023 renewal data, an outpatient clinic was the most common primary setting for Indiana APRNs and primary care the most reported specialty, and every Indiana county had at least one APRN full-time equivalent.
Independent family practices, internal medicine and pediatric offices, women's health clinics and community health centers, federally qualified health centers among them, are often where IWU students find the best fit. As general guidance, ask who approves students, whether the practice wants its own agreement with your school and how many students it already hosts. Your program faculty can tell you what IWU needs from the site before you submit it for approval.

Questions IWU students ask
Can I call an IU Health nurse practitioner directly to ask about precepting?
IU Health's public pages strongly discourage students from cold-calling or walking in on its preceptors and tie that to its agreements with schools. Use its Office of Clinical Education database during the window for your term instead. Reaching an IU Health clinician directly can hurt your chances rather than help them.
Does Deaconess take students from online programs?
Deaconess requires an active affiliation agreement with the student's school and gives priority to employees and students from local schools. Its public page also says it is not currently pursuing new affiliations. Ask your IWU program faculty about your options there before building a plan around a Deaconess site.
Do I need an Indiana RN license for IWU clinicals in Indiana?
IWU requires an active, unencumbered RN license in the state of each practicum site, so an Indiana site calls for either an Indiana RN license or a multistate compact license issued by another compact state. Every license you hold, current or inactive, must be unencumbered.
Are psychiatric NP preceptors hard to find in Indiana?
They are scarcer. In the Bowen Center's 2023 data, psychiatry made up 7.6% of reported APRN specialties, next to 35.3% for primary care. IWU's PMHNP clinical courses also carry large hour blocks, so starting well before the course is the most useful step you can take. The PMHNP program page lists those courses.
How do community health centers usually take NP students?
Processes vary from center to center, so treat this as general guidance. Many route students through a clinical or medical director, may want an agreement with the school and schedule students around patient volume. Ask early what paperwork they need and share it with your IWU program faculty so your approval file can be built around it.
