IWU post-graduate FNP certificate: prerequisites, clinical hours and preceptors
IWU's Post-Graduate APRN Certificate with the Family Nurse Practitioner focus is built for nurses who already hold a master's or doctoral nursing degree. The catalog's minimum is 780 practicum hours, IWU's web FAQ says 850, and the same FAQ is where IWU states that students secure their own clinical sites and preceptors.

Who the certificate is for and how it is built
Admission starts from a master's or doctoral degree in nursing, earned at a CCNE-, ACEN- or CNEA-accredited program. The certificate itself is 26 credits: PYC-602 Professional Role Development, PYC-670 Foundations for Primary Care Practice, and the three Primary Care Across the Lifespan courses. Another 14 credits sit in prerequisites (PYC-614 Advanced Pathophysiology, PYC-612 Advanced Pharmacology and PYC-660 Advanced Health Assessment), for 40 in total.
IWU's FAQ puts the program at about 28 months, or 4 to 6 months less when the prerequisites are already met. Starts are in January, May and August. Courses run 7 to 15 weeks each, one at a time and asynchronous, which suits working nurses; course format and calendar explains the rhythm.
CCNE accredits IWU's post-graduate APRN certificate programs, with the current term running through June 2030.
Three ways to meet the prerequisites
Pathophysiology, pharmacology and advanced health assessment can each be satisfied in one of three ways, according to the catalog:
- An IWU course passed at B or higher, taken within one year of your certificate start
- Pass IWU's competency exams
- Current APRN certification, backed by 500 APRN practice hours over the previous year
The route you take changes your clinical plan. If you complete PYC-660 at IWU, it brings supervised clinical time and the health-assessment residency; the catalog says certificate students "may need to attend" that residency, and the web FAQ describes one residency weekend in the Assessment course on the Marion campus. PYC-660 and the residency covers that course in detail.
Ask your advisor to confirm in writing which prerequisites you have met before your first term, since that decides when your first clinical begins.
Clinical courses and the 780-versus-850 question
IWU publishes no hour figure for any single PYC course. The totals below the table are the only official numbers.
| Course | Title | Credits | Role in the certificate |
|---|---|---|---|
PYC-660 | Advanced Health Assessment | 6 | Prerequisite with supervised clinical and residency, unless met another way |
PYC-670 | Foundations for Primary Care Practice | 5 | First certificate clinical course |
PYC-681 | Primary Care Across the Lifespan I | 6 | Supervised primary care clinical |
PYC-682 | Primary Care Across the Lifespan II | 6 | Supervised primary care clinical |
PYC-683 | Primary Care Across the Lifespan III | 6 | Final clinical course |
The catalog asks for at least 780 practicum hours. The web FAQ for the same certificate says 850 clinical hours across five courses. The catalog is the governing document, but ask faculty which figure applies to your cohort; arranging preceptor time for the higher number spares you a scramble if it turns out to apply. FNP clinical hours compares every FNP figure IWU publishes.
The MSN FNP catalog entry adds an 800-encounter minimum. The certificate entry states hours only, so ask faculty whether encounter targets apply to you.
Securing sites and preceptors: IWU's own words
This certificate's FAQ is the source of IWU's NP placement rule: "Students are responsible for securing clinical sites and preceptors." The same FAQ says you work with program faculty, identify potential preceptors and sites yourself, then submit the required documentation. The university vets and approves every site and preceptor, and approval rests with the School of Nursing.
IWU adds two practical notes: clinical work begins early in the program, so line up possible preceptors ahead of time, and clinical training happens in your own community. During each clinical course, faculty make site visits and run evaluations that look at your performance and at whether the preceptor and site are serving you well; faculty site visits explains what to expect.
Before clinicals, APRN students complete a repeat criminal background check and drug screen, then health clearance and vaccinations, plus anything the site requires, all at their own expense. IWU's recent catalogs put site and preceptor approvals and compliance items into Medatrax, with everything due no later than week two of each practicum course.
Preceptors and settings that fit
IWU steers FNP rotations toward outpatient primary care for every age group, naming family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics and women's health. It allows some specialty hours, while keeping most hours in primary care.
If you already practice as an APRN in another population or specialty, your own clinic may cover adult primary care well yet offer little pediatric or women's health exposure. Plan those rotations deliberately rather than hoping they turn up. IWU has not published preceptor credential rules; they are in its NP Clinical Guidelines.
The certificate's content addresses Indiana scope-of-practice requirements. If you plan to practice in another state, check that state's rules as well; Indiana APRN practice and preceptors shows how Indiana's framework shapes who can precept.
License, states and costs
Wherever a practicum site sits, your RN license in that state must be active and unencumbered, and any encumbrance on any license you hold leads to administrative withdrawal. IWU's 2022 licensure disclosure for the FNP post-master's certificate reports that the curriculum satisfies every state's educational requirements, with added steps flagged for New York, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
The catalog's Nursing Practice Experience Costs policy assigns any clinical placement cost to the student. That covers facility charges where a site has them, plus the compliance steps and travel to the residency weekend. Placement costs at IWU breaks the policy down.
Why certificate students choose us
If you are working while you study, cold-calling practices is hard to fit in, and a thorough preceptor search is exactly what we take off your plate. Our team locates primary care preceptors near you for each PYC course, with an eye on the pediatric and women's health exposure your current job may lack. We prepare the preceptor credentials, license and site details IWU vets; IWU makes the final decision, and your file arrives at the School of Nursing whole and in line with its rules on the first submission. If a preceptor leaves mid-course, we have the replacement search running the same week.
Questions IWU students ask
Is IWU's FNP certificate 780 or 850 clinical hours?
Both figures come from IWU. The 2026-27 catalog sets a minimum of 780 practicum hours; the certificate's web FAQ says 850 across five courses. The catalog governs, but confirm the target with your faculty and syllabus at the start of the first clinical course, and plan preceptor time with the higher number in mind.
Can I skip PYC-660 in IWU's FNP certificate?
Advanced health assessment is a prerequisite you can meet three ways: passing the IWU course at B or above inside a year of your start, sitting IWU's competency exams, or holding APRN certification with 500 practice hours as an APRN over the last 12 months. Even then, the catalog says you may need to attend the onsite residency.
How long does the IWU post-graduate FNP certificate take?
IWU's FAQ says about 28 months, or 4 to 6 months less if your prerequisites are already satisfied. Starts are in January, May and August, and courses are taken one at a time. A clinical course that opens without an approved preceptor is an easy way for that timeline to slip, so plan sites early.
Will an IWU certificate prepare me to practice outside Indiana?
IWU's 2022 disclosure finds the certificate curriculum meets the educational bar in every state, noting additional steps in Rhode Island, New York and New Hampshire. The coursework addresses Indiana scope of practice, so check your own state's APRN rules and licensure steps as well.
Does IWU help certificate students find preceptors?
According to IWU's FAQ, faculty support the search, while identifying preceptors and sites and submitting the documentation fall to you. The university then vets and approves each one. IWU publishes no placement office, preceptor database or paid placement option for graduate students, which is where a placement service built for IWU students comes in.
