IWU's MSN program web page says 700 instead. The post-graduate FNP certificate has its own split, 780 in the catalog against 850 in the web FAQ, so plan to the larger number and confirm it with your syllabus and faculty.

Next to the hours it places an 800-encounter minimum and an onsite health-assessment residency. The ASN-to-MSN FNP entry repeats the 850 hours, the encounter minimums and the residency.

Which MSN figure to plan for
Plan for 850. It is the larger figure, and it sits in the same catalog entry that carries the encounter rule, the prescribed course order and the B-or-better requirement for PYC courses. Scheduling preceptors for 700 and learning mid-program that 850 applies would leave you 150 hours short with your clinic days already booked.
Then confirm it. Ask your program faculty which total governs your cohort, check the hour line in each PYC syllabus as the course opens, and look for the program total in IWU's NP Clinical Guidelines. Keep whatever answer you receive in writing, alongside your clinical log.
A 150-hour gap equals almost nineteen eight-hour clinic days. Settle the number with faculty before your first clinical course, not halfway through it.
The certificate: 780 in the catalog, 850 on the web
The Post-Graduate APRN Certificate in FNP carries a separate conflict. Its catalog entry asks for at least 780 practicum hours and says students may need to attend the onsite health-assessment residency. The certificate's web FAQ describes 850 clinical hours across five courses plus a single residency weekend on the Marion campus during the Assessment course.
The catalog builds the certificate from five courses, the role course PYC-602 and the four clinicals from PYC-670 to PYC-683, and treats pharmacology (PYC-612), pathophysiology (PYC-614) and health assessment (PYC-660) as prerequisites. Each prerequisite can be satisfied three ways: an IWU course graded B or higher within one year of your start date, an IWU competency exam, or a current APRN certification backed by 500 practice hours in the last twelve months.
IWU does not explain the 70-hour difference. Whether PYC-660 ends up inside your plan can change how many clinical courses you take, so ask faculty how your total is counted. Our FNP certificate guide covers the gap analysis in more depth.
How the hours fall across the PYC courses
IWU publishes no per-course hours for the FNP sequence. Each catalog course page says supervised clinical experience is required and stops there, and the older catalog PDFs show nothing beyond titles and credits, so a course-level target appears only in your syllabus.

Where FNP hours are spent
According to the certificate FAQ, which describes the same PYC courses, FNP rotations focus on outpatient and primary care for all ages, drawing on family practice, internal medicine, pediatric and women's health settings. A limited amount of specialty time may be accepted, provided primary care makes up the majority of your hours.

Is IWU's FNP program 700 or 850 clinical hours?
Both numbers come from IWU. The 2026-27 catalog entry for the MSN FNP requires at least 850 supervised practicum hours, while the MSN program's web page lists 700. IWU has not published which is current, so ask your program faculty, read the hour requirement in your syllabus, and build a preceptor schedule that can reach 850.
Does the ASN-to-MSN FNP require the same clinical hours as the MSN?
Yes, according to the catalog. The ASN-to-MSN FNP entry sets 850 practicum hours with the same encounter minimums and the onsite health-assessment residency. The bridge courses at the start of the program carry no FNP clinical time, so your preceptor search matters from the point you reach PYC-660 and the PYC courses that follow.
Do residency hours in Advanced Health Assessment count toward the 850?
IWU does not say. The catalog describes PYC-660 as requiring supervised clinical experience and lists the onsite residency as a separate program requirement, but no public source explains whether residency time is credited toward the practicum total. Your PYC-660 syllabus and course faculty can answer it for your cohort.
Can IWU FNP clinical hours be done in a specialty clinic?
Some can. The certificate FAQ leaves room for some specialty hours but expects the bulk of your clinical time in primary care settings. IWU publishes no cap on specialty hours, so check with course faculty before committing to a dermatology, cardiology or other specialty preceptor.
How long does IWU's FNP program take?
IWU's program data puts the MSN FNP at 28 months over 11 courses, with four years allowed to finish. The ASN-to-MSN FNP runs 41 or more months over 16 courses, with five years allowed. The certificate FAQ puts that route at roughly 28 months, shortened by four to six months when your prerequisites are already satisfied.
