The degree at a glance
The catalog name is Master of Science in Nursing, Major in Primary Care Nursing, Specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner. It carries 49 credits, 9 of them in the graduate nursing core and 40 in the major. IWU's program data describes roughly 28 months across 11 courses, and the catalog allows four years at most to finish.
Coursework is online and asynchronous, taken one course at a time in blocks of 7 to 15 weeks, according to IWU's FNP pages. The travel piece is an onsite residency in advanced health assessment, which IWU's FNP certificate page places on the Marion, Indiana campus. Your supervised hours happen in your own community, and the Marion residencies page shows how the onsite pieces fit around them.
CCNE accredits IWU's master's nursing program; the current term runs to June 30, 2030, with the next on-site evaluation set for fall 2029. On completion you can apply for FNP board certification through what the catalog calls the appropriate credentialing body.

Five courses in the major carry supervised clinical work. The catalog lists credits for each one but publishes no hour split per course, so the official clinical figures are the program totals below the table.

Program totals from the catalog: a minimum of 850 supervised practicum hours, alongside no fewer than 800 patient encounters. Of those encounters, at least 350 must be with adults (40 of them in women's health) and at least 150 with pediatric patients.
IWU's own pages disagree on the hours. The MSN program web page advertises 700 clinical hours, while the catalog, the governing document, says 850. Sequence, grades and why timing matters
The FNP major is lock-step. IWU fixes the order, and each PYC course needs a B or better. Failing a course brings administrative withdrawal, and a second unsatisfactory grade ends in dismissal from the program.
That structure makes preceptor timing critical. A later course cannot open early to absorb lost weeks, and a clinical course that closes short on hours puts the grade in danger. Having each site confirmed before the course begins protects your whole graduation date; the progression rules page walks through what happens after a poor grade.
Stepping away for longer than six months adds conditions to re-entry: competency exams in pharmacology, pathophysiology and physical assessment, plus a recorded video of a complete history and physical. Falsifying clinical hours carries the heaviest penalty in the catalog, immediate dismissal with no route back into IWU's master's nursing programs.
Who finds the preceptor, and how IWU approves
IWU puts it plainly: "Students are responsible for securing clinical sites and preceptors." The line comes from the FNP certificate page, which runs the same PYC courses as the MSN. Program faculty work alongside you, but you identify the potential preceptor and site, and the university vets and approves each one before hours begin.

The preceptors and sites that fit this track
According to IWU, FNP rotations lean on outpatient primary care for patients of every age, drawing on family practice, pediatric, internal medicine and women's health settings. A share of specialty time may be permitted, but primary care should carry most of your hours.
Choose sites with the encounter minimums in mind. A busy family practice that treats children and adults can feed several counts at once. An internal medicine clinic builds adult numbers quickly, a women's health practice covers the 40-encounter slice, and a pediatric office is often what carries you past 150 pediatric encounters.

Admission rules that shape your clinical plan
- RN experience: 500 or more hours of direct patient care within the 12 months before admission
- A bachelor's in nursing from a school accredited by CCNE, ACEN or CNEA; RNs with a non-nursing bachelor's and 10 years of experience may apply by portfolio
- An undergraduate GPA of 3.25
- Every nursing license you hold, current or inactive, unencumbered
- A criminal background check completed within six weeks of the program start
The license rule carries into every clinical. Every state where a PYC site sits needs your RN license to be current and unencumbered there; lose that standing and IWU withdraws you administratively. APRN students also add, before the first practicum, a second background check, a drug screen and records for TB, rubella, MMR, flu and hepatitis B. Random or for-cause drug tests can follow at any point.

The 2026-27 catalog sets at least 850 supervised practicum hours plus 800 patient encounters. The MSN program web page still says 700. The catalog is IWU's governing document, so plan on 850, and check the hour target listed in each PYC syllabus. If your faculty give you a different figure in writing, follow their instruction and keep a copy.
Does IWU assign FNP preceptors to MSN students?
IWU publishes no graduate placement office, site database or paid placement option. Its FNP pages say students find potential preceptors and sites with faculty support, and the School of Nursing then approves them. Expect to supply the names yourself, which is exactly the part a placement service handles for you.
Can I complete IWU FNP clinicals outside Indiana?
Yes. Clinicals happen in your own community, wherever that is, as long as your RN license in that state is active and unencumbered. IWU's 2022 disclosure for this degree judges the FNP curriculum adequate for licensure education rules nationwide, with added steps in three states: New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island.
When should I start looking for my first FNP preceptor?
Early. IWU says clinical work begins early in the program and advises lining up possible preceptors ahead of time. PYC-660 is the first clinical course, so your first site should be in view well before it opens. IWU has not published a required lead time; check the NP Clinical Guidelines for yours.
Do urgent care or specialty hours count toward IWU FNP totals?
IWU says some specialty hours may be allowed, but most hours must be in primary care. It publishes no specific cap on urgent care, inpatient or telehealth hours. Ask your course faculty before booking time in a specialty setting, and keep primary care sites as the backbone of each rotation.
