Built around IWU's calendar and review
IWU National & Global courses run one at a time, typically 7 to 15 weeks each, with weekly deadlines and a cohort that moves together. Practicum work begins early in the program, and IWU advises lining up preceptors ahead of time. We plan your search against that rhythm rather than a semester calendar.
IWU's 2024-25 and 2025-26 catalogs name Medatrax as the place for site and preceptor approvals, health requirements and compliance education, and warn that a student still missing them in week two of a practicum course may be dismissed. Faculty also visit sites and run evaluations in each FNP clinical course, per IWU's FNP certificate FAQ. Every preceptor we bring you hears about that visit before agreeing, so the day your course faculty call holds no surprises.
What stays with you and with IWU
Some steps belong to you or to IWU by design, and we plan around them. Before any patient contact, IWU's NP students complete a second background check, a drug screen, health clearance and immunizations at their own expense, plus anything the site adds. You submit your approval items through IWU's process, and your course faculty grade your clinical work.
IWU gives the final approval of every site and preceptor. Our part is to make sure what reaches the university is complete, accurate and fits its rules the first time, which keeps your course moving. The preceptor approval page walks through that review.

Questions IWU students ask
How early should I contact you before my IWU practicum course?
As early as you know your course sequence. IWU tells students that clinicals begin early and that preceptors should be lined up in advance, but it publishes no fixed lead time. More weeks mean more practices to choose from and room for IWU's review before your Medatrax deadline. If your course is close, contact us anyway; short timelines are part of what we handle.
Do I still submit my preceptor to IWU myself?
Yes. Under IWU's process the student sends in the documentation, and the university then vets and approves the site and preceptor. We prepare that documentation with you, so what you upload is complete and matches your course. Your program faculty remain your contact for questions about the review itself.
Can you place me outside Indiana?
Yes. IWU students train in their own communities across the country, and our search follows you wherever you live, as long as your RN license there is active and unencumbered, as IWU expects for any practicum state. The outside Indiana page covers the extra state checks.
Where do IWU's preceptor qualifications come from?
IWU's public pages leave them out. The catalog points students to internal documents such as the NP Clinical Guidelines and the student handbook kept inside each Brightspace course. Do you work with DNP, leadership and education students too?
Yes.
