What shapes the cost of an IWU preceptor placement
Every quote we give an IWU student rests on five things: your program and course, the specialty your preceptor must practice, where you live, how soon the course starts and how many hours or encounters the placement must carry. This page explains each one and sets out what IWU's own catalog says about who pays for clinical placement.

IWU's policy: placement costs sit with the student
IWU's catalog answers the payment question before you ask it. Under the policy titled CAPS – Nursing Practice Experience Costs, each nursing program in IWU National & Global involves practice work that requires a clinical facility or preceptor, and the student carries any cost of clinical placement.
The MSN program pages put it in practical terms: clinicals happen in your own community, and where a facility charges for a placement, you pay it. IWU publishes no placement office, site database or paid placement option for its online graduate students.
That makes the search, and any help with it, part of your clinical budget from the start. Planning for it early is easier than pricing it in a rush. The placement costs page lists every student-paid clinical cost IWU names.
The five things that shape a quote
Your placement advisor prices each placement from the details of your course. These are the factors that move a quote, and why each one changes the work involved.

No two IWU placements weigh these the same way, which is why each one is quoted individually instead of from a price list.
Program, course and specialty
The course sets the preceptor profile, and some profiles are harder to fill. FNP students need primary care and outpatient settings across the lifespan; IWU's FNP certificate FAQ lets a portion of hours come from specialty settings while the bulk stays in primary care. The catalog's encounter targets, at least 350 adult (40 of them women's health) and 150 pediatric within 800, can call for a second site when one practice sees mostly adults. The patient encounters page breaks those counts down.
PMHNP courses carry large blocks of psychiatric hours: 150 for PMHN-628 and 175 each for PMHN-630, PMHN-640 and PMHN-650, per IWU's course pages. DNP students need at least 1,000 practicum hours across the program, and Health Systems Leadership students need 520 across seven practicum courses. The more specialized or longer the placement, the more outreach it takes.
Location and timing
Where you live changes how many practices are within reach and how they take students. In Indiana, IU Health accepts NP students through its own application database with set windows, while Franciscan Health and Deaconess require a school affiliation agreement. Independent practices decide more locally. The Indiana preceptors page explains each route.
Timing matters because IWU runs one course at a time and the next one starts on schedule. IWU's 2024-25 and 2025-26 catalogs want site and preceptor approvals entered in Medatrax no later than week two of each practicum course. A request that arrives with months to spare leaves room to choose the best fit; one that arrives weeks out calls for a faster, more concentrated search.
Pricing one course or your whole sequence
Many IWU students need a preceptor for more than one course. FNP students move through PYC-660, PYC-670 and PYC-681 to PYC-683 in lock-step order, and PMHNP students work through six clinical PMHN courses. Some preceptors can host you across several of them; others fit a single course.
You can ask for a quote on one course or on your whole remaining sequence. Planning the sequence at once lets us look for preceptors who can stay with you longer and spot gaps, such as pediatric encounters, before they turn urgent.

Other clinical costs to budget for
Our quote covers the search, the approval file and replacement support. IWU's catalog and program pages name other clinical costs that you pay directly, and it helps to budget for them at the same time.
- A criminal background check at admission, completed within six weeks of the program start
- A second background check, a drug screen, health clearance and immunizations (TB, rubella, MMR, flu and hepatitis B) before the first practicum course
- Any extra requirement a practicum site sets, such as its own onboarding
- Travel to Marion for residencies and intensives; IWU states that DNP Systems Leadership residency travel is at the student's expense
- Competency exams, and any audited course, if you return after more than six months out of class

Questions IWU students ask
Why is there no price list on this site?
IWU placements differ too much for one number to be accurate. A PMHNP course with 175 psychiatric hours in a rural county is a different search from an FNP course in Indianapolis with months of lead time. Your placement advisor quotes from your actual program, course, location and dates, so the number you see fits the work involved.
Does IWU cover the cost of a placement service?
IWU's catalog places any cost of clinical placement on the student under its Nursing Practice Experience Costs policy, and IWU publishes no paid placement option of its own. For questions about whether financial aid can apply to a particular expense, ask IWU's financial aid staff or your academic advisor.
Is a PMHNP placement quoted differently from an FNP placement?
It can be. Psychiatric preceptors are fewer than primary care preceptors in most communities, and the PMHN clinical courses carry long hour blocks. An FNP placement has its own challenge in the adult, women's health and pediatric encounter targets. Each quote reflects the specialty and what the course asks for.
Does my start date change the quote?
Yes, it is one of the five factors. A course that starts in a few weeks needs a concentrated search and a fast approval file, while a course several months out leaves more room to choose. Reaching out once you know your course sequence gives you the widest choice of preceptors.
Are compliance checks and residency travel part of the quote?
Those are separate. IWU's program pages have students pay for background checks, drug screens, health clearance and immunizations, and residency travel generally sits in your own budget; IWU states it outright for the DNP Systems Leadership residencies.
