IWU clinical hours, program by program
Indiana Wesleyan's 2026-27 catalog sets the practicum totals: 850 hours for the FNP, 820 for the PMHNP, 1,000 for the DNP and 520 for Health Systems Leadership, with Nursing Education at 175. A few of IWU's own web pages print different numbers, so this page shows both figures side by side and explains how to settle which one you are held to.

Where IWU's own figures disagree
Three programs carry two or more totals across IWU's pages, and the gaps run from 70 hours to 295. That is too much to shrug off as a rounding quirk, because it changes how many weeks of preceptor time you need.
- FNP, MSN and ASN-to-MSN: 850 supervised practicum hours in the catalog, against 700 on the public MSN program page.
- FNP certificate: the catalog lists 780 hours; the certificate's web FAQ says 850 spread over five courses.
- PMHNP: the catalog sets 820; the MSN web page says 525; the six PMHN course pages total 785.
IWU publishes no note explaining any of these differences. Your course syllabus and your program faculty decide which total applies to you, and the detail the catalog leaves out sits in IWU's NP Clinical Guidelines. Ask the question in writing early and keep the reply with your records.
Build your preceptor schedule around the larger figure until your faculty confirm a smaller one in writing.
What counts toward a total
The FNP is the only IWU program that pairs an hour minimum with a patient-count minimum. Alongside the 850 hours, the catalog asks for at least 800 encounters, including 350 adult (40 of them in women's health) and 150 pediatric, so a full hour log can still fall short if the patient mix is wrong. The patient encounters guide breaks the counts down.
DNP hours accrue another way. Course-assigned clinical hours count, as can other work and projects once faculty or the designated academic leader sign off; the post-master's route also accepts up to 500 hours from master's clinicals. Our page on the 1,000-hour DNP rule covers both routes.
Timing matters too. On the Post-MBA route, nothing goes in the log until the practicum agency agrees to host you, and NP students see no patients until the repeat background check, the drug screen and their health clearance are done.
Per-course hours: printed for some tracks, missing for others
IWU prints hours on the course pages for the PMHNP, Health Systems Leadership and Nursing Education sequences. The FNP courses, the BSN-to-DNP FNP courses and the DNP project courses show credits and descriptions only, and IWU's two previous catalog PDFs add nothing further.
- PMHNP: 75 hours in
PMHN-652, 150 inPMHN-628, 175 in each psychotherapy course, and 35 inPMHN-693, which adds an onsite intensive. The PMHNP hours page walks through them. - Health Systems Leadership: six practicum courses at 65 hours and the

NRE-664, with a master's-prepared nurse as preceptor, and 140 in theNRE-695capstone. - BSN-to-DNP PMHNP:
DNP-752carries 75 hours,DNP-728carries 150, and the three DNP psychotherapy courses carry 175 apiece.
Where no per-course figure exists, the syllabus for that course sets the target. The planner at the top of this page lists each track's clinical courses in order, so you can see which ones need a preceptor and roughly how long each commitment runs.
Hours and IWU's course calendar
IWU's FNP certificate FAQ describes courses that run one at a time for 7 to 15 weeks each, taken in a prescribed order. A clinical course therefore has a short window, and its hours have to fit inside it with a preceptor who is already approved.
IWU's recent catalogs add a firm edge. Compliance education, health requirements and the approval of your site and preceptor all go into Medatrax, and anyone whose submissions are still missing when a practicum course reaches its second week may be dismissed. Because the sequence is lock-step, a clinical course you cannot finish holds up every course behind it. The hour total is really a planning question for the whole program, not just for the course in front of you.

Questions IWU students ask
Which IWU nursing program requires the most clinical hours?
Both DNP routes set the highest floor at 1,000 graduate practicum hours. In the BSN-to-DNP, your NP clinical courses and DNP project work build toward that number together. Among master's programs, the FNP's 850 catalog hours edge out the PMHNP's 820, and the FNP also carries its 800-encounter minimum on top of the hours.
Do IWU's Health Systems Leadership practicum hours need a preceptor?
IWU describes the 520 hours as supervised onsite practicum, completed at sites students secure and the School of Nursing approves, and the capstone happens at a site of your choosing. Post-MBA students need the agency's permission before hours begin. IWU does not publish who may supervise, so check your syllabus and ask your course faculty before you approach a mentor.
Does IWU's RN-to-BSN have clinical hours?
IWU's web FAQ says the online RN-to-BSN has no set number of traditional clinical hours. Practice work builds toward the NUR-492 capstone, an immersive practicum built around a quality-improvement project, and NUR-474 includes fieldwork with vulnerable populations. An IWU article from November 2025 says your own workplace may qualify, provided it satisfies IWU's conditions on faculty oversight, learning objectives and who can serve as preceptor.
Can clinical hours from before IWU count toward my total?
Only one published rule allows it. IWU's DNP in Systems Leadership page allows as many as 500 hours from a master's clinical record to count toward the 1,000. For the BSN-to-DNP, transferred credit cannot cover any practicum course. IWU publishes no hour-transfer rule for its MSN or certificate programs, so ask program faculty before assuming any credit.
Where do I find the hour target for a single FNP course?
In that course's syllabus. IWU's catalog course pages for PYC-660 through PYC-683 say supervised clinical time is required but give no per-course hours, and the older catalog PDFs list only titles and credits. Program faculty and the NP Clinical Guidelines can confirm how the program total is split across the sequence.
