The 2026-27 catalog lists PYC-683 Primary Care Across the Lifespan III at 6 credits as the third and final lifespan course, and it is the last FNP clinical course in the MSN. The course page states that supervised clinical experiences are required. Like the rest of the major, it needs a B or better.
By title and position it completes the series that PYC-681 opens, whose catalog focus is acute and chronic disease across the lifespan. By the final course, the practical goal is readiness for entry-level FNP practice: seeing a full range of primary care patients, reasoning through each one and presenting a defensible plan. For BSN-to-DNP FNP students the counterpart is DNP-783, also 6 credits, and it counts toward the doctorate's 1,000 practicum hours. For post-graduate FNP certificate students, PYC-683 is likewise the last clinical course of the certificate.

The preceptor and site that fit the final course
IWU's FNP clinicals center on primary care for all ages. Family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics and women's health are the named settings, and a small amount of specialty time is allowed. For PYC-683, pick the setting that does two jobs at once: it finishes any encounter category still short, and it resembles the kind of practice you hope to join after graduation.
A high-volume family practice suits most students because it can finish adult, pediatric and women's health counts together. A pediatric practice suits someone still short on children. Look for a preceptor willing to let you carry a fuller schedule, since the last course is your best chance to practice at something close to a new NP's pace under supervision.
IWU's preceptor qualifications are set out in its NP Clinical Guidelines, which are not posted publicly, and faculty continue to visit and evaluate placements in this course. Every site and preceptor still needs IWU approval, even in the final weeks of the program.
Finishing on time and graduating
IWU's catalog gives the MSN four years to complete, and the ASN-to-MSN FNP five; missing the limit leads to administrative withdrawal. Program data puts the MSN FNP at about 28 months, so most students have room, but a delay in the last clinical course is the one that pushes graduation back most directly.
IWU's 2025-26 catalog set degree conferral for National & Global students on the second Friday of each month from September 2025, with conferral moved to the Friday before the ceremony in months that have one. Ceremonies are held in spring and winter. After PYC-683: certification and practice in Indiana
The catalog says MSN FNP graduates can apply for FNP certification from the appropriate credentialing body, and IWU's licensure disclosures name AANP and ANCC. IWU's FNP certificate page adds that the curriculum addresses Indiana scope-of-practice requirements and tells students planning to practice elsewhere to check that state's rules.
Indiana issues no separate NP practice license. APRNs who prescribe hold an APRN Prescriptive Authority license, applied for in MyLicense One, and must file a written collaborative practice agreement with a licensed practitioner. Bills filed in 2025 and 2026 to remove that requirement stalled after introduction, and the Professional Licensing Agency still requires the agreement. What if I reach the end of PYC-683 short of 800 encounters?
IWU publishes no procedure for a shortfall. The 800 encounters are a program minimum in the catalog, so your course faculty and Program Leader decide how a gap is handled. Raise it with them as soon as your tally shows a risk, well before the course's final week, rather than after grades post.
