The course page confirms that supervised clinical experiences are required. In practice, the second lifespan course is a good moment to take on more of each visit yourself. You still work under supervision, but with an assessment course, a foundations course and one lifespan course behind you, you can ask your preceptor to let you run the history, reach a working diagnosis and propose the plan before they step in.
The BSN-to-DNP FNP carries the same course as DNP-782, 6 credits with supervised clinical experience, and its hours count toward the doctorate's 1,000-hour minimum. Post-graduate FNP certificate students take PYC-682 as the third clinical course inside the certificate.
The midpoint of the lifespan block
When PYC-682 opens, 17 of the 29 FNP clinical credits are complete, and only PYC-683 follows it. The order cannot shift: IWU's master's nursing courses run in a prescribed sequence, and a failed major course brings administrative withdrawal from the program. That makes this course the last comfortable point to fix an unbalanced log.
Keeping the preceptor you had for Primary Care Across the Lifespan I can be a real advantage, because they already know your level. IWU publishes no rule against it, but a change of setting is worth considering if the first site never delivered the children or women's health visits you still need.

The preceptor and site profile for PYC-682
Primary care for patients of every age is the home of IWU's FNP rotations, and the university lists family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics and women's health as core settings. Specialty time is possible in small amounts, but primary care must carry most of it. For PYC-682, the best preceptor is often the one whose patient mix fills whatever your log is missing.
If your earlier courses were adult-heavy internal medicine, a pediatric or family practice preceptor brings balance. If you have plenty of children but few women's health visits, a women's health practice for part of the course may be the answer. When a preceptor leaves during PYC-682
Losing a preceptor mid-course is stressful, but IWU's catalog gives you options. The nursing division's incomplete rule lets a student who has finished at least 75% of the coursework ask the instructor by email for an incomplete. The Program Leader must sign off, the extension faculty grant can run as long as 10 weeks, and a student who missed attendance requirements cannot receive one.
Stay engaged in the meantime. The 2026-27 catalog withdraws a student from a class after 14 consecutive days without engagement, meaning no posts, submissions or quizzes. If you cannot take a course at all, arrange it with the Office of Learner Success before the course begins; the Program Leader helps set the retake, and cohort placement may be delayed. IWU does not publish an hour figure for PYC-682. The catalog lists 6 credits and a supervised clinical requirement, and your syllabus gives the course target. The program-level rule in the 2026-27 catalog is at least 850 practicum hours and 800 patient encounters for the MSN FNP, while IWU's MSN web page mentions 700 hours.
Where can IWU FNP students get women's health encounters?
IWU names women's health among the core FNP settings, and the catalog requires at least 40 women's health encounters within the 350 adult minimum. A women's health practice is the most direct route, and a family practice that offers well-woman care can also contribute. Ask faculty how visits are classified before you rely on one site.
Can I take a break between PYC-682 and PYC-683?
Arrange any break with the Office of Learner Success before the next course begins. The catalog warns that cohort placement may be delayed on return, and a student out more than six months must pass competency exams in pharmacology, pathophysiology and physical assessment and submit a complete history-and-physical video before re-enrolling.
