IWU DNP in Systems Leadership: practicum hours, residencies and project mentors
IWU's post-master's Doctor of Nursing Practice in Systems Leadership takes about two years and requires at least 1,000 graduate practicum hours. IWU's program page lets up to 500 of them come from master's-level clinical experience; the rest build through the DNP project, cultural immersion and advanced practice roles courses, with three short residencies on the Marion campus.

In the catalog this is the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Major in Nursing Practice, Specialization in Systems Leadership. The catalog lists 27 to 33 credits; IWU's program page says 31. The catalog puts the length at about 26 months with a four-year maximum, while IWU's program data says 24 months and 10 courses.
Delivery combines onsite residencies with online workshops. IWU's program page places three residencies on the Marion, Indiana campus, each lasting four days or less, and travel to them is at your own expense. The rest of the practicum happens in practice settings and with mentors, covered further down; Marion residencies covers the onsite schedule across programs.
IWU's DNP holds CCNE accreditation, with the next on-site evaluation due in fall 2029. The catalog names no certification exam for this specialization, which is a leadership doctorate rather than an NP track.
The 1,000 hours and the 500-hour transfer
Every IWU DNP graduate needs at least 1,000 graduate practicum hours. For this post-master's program, IWU's program page allows up to 500 to transfer from master's-level clinical experience. The catalog repeats the 1,000-hour minimum but does not print the transfer cap, so get your own transfer figure confirmed in writing at admission.
How much transfers depends on your documented master's clinical work. An NP graduate with a large supervised clinical record may bring the full 500, while a nurse whose master's included few supervised hours will earn more of the 1,000 at IWU. Either way, the gap between transferred hours and 1,000 is what your DNP practicum courses must fill.
Practicum work and exceptions in the DNP are approved by a designated academic leader or by the dean who heads IWU's Division of Doctoral Programs. The detailed counting rules are in IWU's clinical guidelines and DNP Project Manual, which are not public; the DNP 1,000-hour rule sets out what is known.

The global health immersion
The catalog requires domestic or international travel in the global healthcare course. IWU's program page frames it as a choice: a local, domestic or international immersion, with travel paid by the student. DNP-830 Cultural Immersion in Health Systems may take you somewhere regional, national or international, and DNP-835 Healthcare Across Cultures, a regional option, may substitute. Both list DNP-730 as a prerequisite.
Treat the immersion as a placement in its own right. It needs a host setting, dates that fit around work and residencies, and a budget, since IWU's Nursing Practice Experience Costs policy assigns practice-experience costs to the student. Placement costs explains that policy. Choosing the local or regional option early can keep the immersion from colliding with your project timeline.
Practice settings and mentors
IWU does not state who arranges DNP practicum settings. What the catalog does make clear is what each course needs. DNP-810 happens inside a practice setting, where you assess the environment and write the formal proposal. DNP-811 carries the project into implementation with a mentor and includes regulatory approvals. DNP-840 runs on direct mentorship.
Admission already asks for a statement of the practice issue your DNP project will address, so the right setting is the one where that issue lives, with leaders who can open doors, share data and sign off on changes. A mentor with authority in that system can make regulatory approvals and implementation much smoother.

Admission and license rules
- An MSN from a CCNE-, ACEN- or CNEA-accredited program, or a non-nursing master's plus 7 years of nursing experience by portfolio
- A graduate GPA of 3.25
- An RN license, plus an APRN license if you hold one
- A statement of the practice issue for your DNP project
The license rule continues into the practicum: IWU requires an active license in the state where you do practicum work. If your project or immersion takes you across a state line, check licensing before you commit to the setting.
If you come in through the non-nursing master's portfolio route, check early how many master's-level clinical hours IWU will recognize, since the transfer allowance is tied to clinical experience at the master's level. A smaller transfer means more of the 1,000 hours fall inside your DNP courses, and more mentor time to arrange.
