Can you do IWU clinicals where you work?
Often, yes, if the placement meets IWU's conditions. An IWU article on RN pathways says practicum hours at your own workplace may work when faculty oversight, learning objectives and preceptor qualifications are all satisfied, and IWU still vets and approves the site like any other. How far that stretches depends on your program.

What IWU says about workplace sites
IWU's clearest statement is in a November 2025 article mapping the path from RN to BSN to MSN online. It says RNs may be able to complete practicum hours at their own workplace, provided the placement meets requirements for faculty oversight, learning objectives and preceptor qualifications. It also advises confirming site agreements early with an advisor.
Nothing about a workplace skips IWU's normal process. Every site and preceptor still passes through university vetting and approval, and the same compliance rules apply before patient contact. A workplace simply gives you a head start on the relationship, not on the approval. The article is written for RN-to-BSN and MSN students, so NP students should read it alongside the setting rules for their own clinical courses.
How each program treats workplace sites
IWU's programs vary a lot here. Leadership and RN-to-BSN tracks lean on workplace settings, while NP tracks are shaped by course setting rules.
| Program | What IWU publishes |
|---|---|
| RN-to-BSN | No set clinical hours; the NUR-492 quality-improvement project is often done at the student's workplace |
| HSL post-graduate certificate | About 260 practicum hours, usually at the student's workplace or another approved setting |
| MSN HSL, Post-MBA, MSN/MBA | Capstone at a location you choose; student-secured sites need School of Nursing approval; Post-MBA needs agency permission before hours |
| Nursing Education | NRE-664 in a clinical nursing practice area with a master's-prepared preceptor; NRE-695 in varied educational settings |
| FNP and PMHNP | No workplace-specific statement; course setting rules and encounter or hour targets apply |
| DNP | DNP-810 is set in the practice environment; BSN-to-DNP hours can include faculty-approved work and projects |
IWU's three conditions in practice
Faculty oversight. IWU faculty need to be able to oversee the placement, which for FNP courses includes site visits and evaluations in each clinical course. A workplace that cannot accommodate that oversight will struggle to qualify.
Learning objectives. The work has to match the course. For NP students, that means advanced practice work such as assessment, diagnosis and management, not your usual RN duties. An inpatient unit where you work as a staff nurse is a poor match for FNP courses built around primary care and outpatient settings across the lifespan.
Preceptor qualifications. Your preceptor must meet IWU's standards, which IWU sets out in its NP Clinical Guidelines instead of on its website. A colleague who is keen to help still needs to clear the same bar as any outside preceptor. See who can precept an IWU student for what is known.
Keeping student time separate from paid work
The biggest risk at a workplace site is blurred lines. Student hours and paid shifts happen in the same building, sometimes with the same people, so it helps to set clear boundaries from the start.
IWU's integrity rule is strict: it treats falsified hours as grounds for immediate dismissal, and a dismissed student cannot return to its Masters Nursing programs. An honest log is non-negotiable, and a clean separation between work time and student time makes it easy to keep.
- Schedule student days as distinct blocks, not as extensions of a paid shift.
- Log only time spent in the student role, under your preceptor's supervision.
- Ask faculty whether a direct supervisor or close colleague may serve as your preceptor before you ask them.
- Keep your preceptor's evaluation of you separate from any employment review.
Your employer's own student process
Large health systems often run formal student programs of their own. At IU Health, NP and other advanced practice students apply through the Office of Clinical Education, which checks that the school holds an educational affiliation agreement. Franciscan Health gives its own employees priority for NP rotations yet still requires a valid affiliation agreement, and Deaconess puts employees first while noting it is not currently pursuing new affiliations.
IWU does not publish an affiliation-agreement process, which is why its advice to confirm site agreements early matters. Ask your employer's education office what it needs from a school, then take that to your IWU advisor and program faculty well before the course. Our page on Indiana NP preceptors covers what the state's larger systems ask of students.
Being an employee does not waive a health system's affiliation rules. Check them before you count on a workplace site.
When the workplace covers only part of the program
Even a strong workplace site may not cover everything. FNP students need at least 800 patient encounters, including 150 pediatric and 40 in women's health, and an adult-focused workplace may leave those counts short. PMHNP students moving into PMHN-640 need family and group therapy experience that an individual-therapy practice may not offer.
The practical answer is a mix: your workplace for the courses it fits, and a complementary site for the rest. Plan that mix at the start of the program so the second site is approved before you need it. The patient encounters page helps you see where the gaps are. Look ahead across the whole lock-step sequence, since each course can pull toward a different population.
How we help with workplace and outside sites
We look at your workplace first, honestly and against IWU's rules. If it fits a course, we help assemble the file IWU reviews for it, including the preceptor's credentials and license and the site information. Where it falls short, we find the complementary site in your community, matched to the course and the encounter counts you still need. If a workplace preceptor changes roles or leaves partway through, we line up a replacement so the course can continue.
IWU makes the final approval decision on every site, workplace or not. Our preparation gives the School of Nursing a complete, rule-fitting file for each one, so the review can focus on the decision itself. Start with how it works or send your program and workplace details through the form below.
Questions IWU students ask
Can my manager be my IWU preceptor?
IWU's public pages do not address it. Whether a direct supervisor may precept you is the kind of rule kept in the NP Clinical Guidelines, so check there and ask program faculty before approaching your manager. Even where it is allowed, keeping the preceptor role separate from your employment review protects both of you.
Do hours from my regular RN job count as IWU clinical hours?
IWU's NP programs count supervised practicum hours tied to a course, which is different from your usual RN work. Log only time spent in the student role, since falsified hours lead to dismissal. BSN-to-DNP students are the exception to watch: their hours can include faculty-approved work and projects, as the DNP Project Manual explains.
Does my employer need an affiliation agreement with IWU?
That depends on your employer. IWU publishes no affiliation-agreement process, but systems such as IU Health, Franciscan Health and Deaconess say on their own pages that they require one. Ask your education office early, and confirm the arrangement with your IWU advisor, as IWU's own article recommends.
Can RN-to-BSN students complete the capstone at work?
Often, yes. IWU notes that the NUR-492 quality-improvement project is frequently done at the student's own workplace. If the facility requires a background check, drug testing or immunization tracking, those are at your expense, and instructions come from the Division of Post-licensure Nursing.
Can FNP students do every clinical at their workplace?
Only if the workplace fits each course's primary care focus and supports the encounter minimums: 800 total, with at least 350 adult (40 in women's health) and 150 pediatric. If your workplace cannot supply those, plan a second site early so approval is in place before that course begins.
