IWU RN-to-BSN: the NUR-492 capstone practicum and where to complete it
IWU's online RN-to-BSN does not attach a fixed count of traditional clinical hours. Its practice work builds toward NUR-492, the final course, where you lead a quality-improvement project through an immersive practicum, while NUR-474 adds fieldwork with vulnerable populations. IWU says the capstone project is often done at the student's own workplace, provided the site meets its conditions.

The program at a glance
The degree is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a Major in Nursing. The major is 30 credits within a 120-credit degree, and you need at least 60 transferable credits before starting it. IWU's program data describes 12 or more months across 8 or more courses.
Everything is online and taken one course at a time. The catalog fixes the two ends of the sequence, with NUR-338 first and NUR-492 last, and recommends taking no more than two core courses at a time. Course format and calendar explains IWU's modular schedule.
CCNE accredits IWU's baccalaureate nursing programs, including the RN-to-BSN, with the current term running to June 30, 2030. IWU's accreditation page lists the RN-BSN separately among its CCNE-accredited programs.
Where the practice work sits
According to IWU's program FAQ, the degree has no fixed quota of traditional clinical hours. Instead, practice elements appear in specific courses:

Because IWU publishes no hour count for any of these, your syllabus is the authority on how much practicum time each one expects and how it is documented. Read it the week the course opens and note anything your site must sign.
No fixed clinical hours does not mean no site: NUR-492 still needs a setting and a qualified preceptor.
NUR-492 at your own workplace
IWU published an article in November 2025 on moving from RN through BSN to MSN online, and it notes that working nurses may be able to log practicum hours at their own employer. The workplace has to meet three requirements: faculty oversight, learning objectives that fit the course, and a preceptor who meets IWU's qualifications. The article advises confirming site agreements early with your advisor.
The program FAQ says the capstone includes a quality-improvement project proposal, often done at the student's workplace. That makes sense: you already know the unit's problems, the data and the people who can approve a change.
Plan three things before the course opens. Choose a real quality problem your unit cares about. Find a preceptor who meets the qualification requirement (IWU does not list the qualifications publicly, so ask your advisor). Get your manager's support in writing. When your workplace is not the right fit
Some nurses cannot use their own employer: the facility may not agree to a site arrangement, no qualified preceptor may be available, or your role (agency, travel or per diem work, for example) may not give you a stable unit to base a project on. In those cases you need a different facility that will host an immersive practicum.
NUR-474 raises a separate question. Its fieldwork involves vulnerable populations and key informants, which points toward community settings such as public health programs, clinics serving underserved groups or community organizations. Your own hospital may not offer that, so look beyond it early.
IWU does not state whether RN-to-BSN students or the university arrange practicum sites. Ask your advisor at the start of the program what support is available, and give yourself time to secure a site if you need one.
Compliance, costs and license

- An active, unencumbered RN license in the state or states of your practicum sites
The license rule has a practical edge for nurses who hold a license in one state and work near a border or travel for work. If your capstone site sits in a different state from your home license, check that your license covers practice there before you commit, since the catalog ties your eligibility to licensure in the practicum state.

Looking ahead to the MSN
If you are weighing an MSN after the BSN, expect the clinical picture to change sharply. The nurse practitioner tracks require hundreds of supervised hours (850 in the MSN FNP catalog and 820 in the PMHNP), and IWU's rule for those tracks puts securing sites and preceptors on the student. They also set a year-before-admission minimum of 500 direct-care hours as an RN.

Is the IPE-402 global experience required?
No. IPE-402 is an optional two-credit cross-cultural experience. If you choose it, you arrange the global travel yourself, and any travel cost is yours. It does not replace the NUR-492 capstone practicum, which remains the final course in the sequence, so plan the two separately if you take both.
Does IWU arrange RN-to-BSN practicum sites?
