IWU's course format and calendar for online nursing students
IWU National & Global has no semesters. You take one course at a time, each lasting 7 to 15 weeks, alongside the same cohort and on weekly deadlines, and the NP programs start in January, May and August. For clinicals, that rhythm means every practicum course needs its preceptor confirmed before the course opens, because a short module leaves little slack for a late start.

A modular calendar instead of semesters
IWU's catalog describes the College of Adult and Professional Studies, home of the online nursing programs, as running on a non-traditional academic calendar. Courses still carry semester-hour credit, yet there is no fall or spring term for IWU National & Global students. Each course is a self-contained module taught asynchronously in Brightspace.
The university's Academic Calendars page and its 2026-2034 calendar PDF cover the Marion residential semesters only. No matching term calendar is published for the online programs, so the calendar that governs you is personal: the dates of each course in your own sequence. Self-Service shows your schedule, and each course appears in Brightspace seven days before it begins.
For working nurses the upside is steady progress with no wait for a new term. The trade-off is that no break between terms gives you a natural moment to line up the next clinical, so planning ahead matters more here than in a semester program.
One course at a time, in a cohort
IWU's FNP certificate FAQ sets out the rhythm the NP programs share. Course length ranges from 7 to 15 weeks, set by how much content and clinical work each one carries. You take them singly, move through the program with a consistent peer group and meet weekly deadlines, so the pace is set for you rather than self-directed. IWU estimates roughly 10 to 15 hours a week of coursework, with clinical hours on top.
The catalog calls the master's nursing majors an accelerated cohort model and enrolls students in the full list of major courses from day one. Courses follow a prescribed order, so one delayed course can hold up everything behind it.

- MSN/MBA dual degree: courses of 2 to 10 weeks taken singly, no residency, with starts in March, June and December.

Feeds change as cohorts fill or dates shift, so confirm your start with your academic advisor. Then count backward from it when you plan clinicals. IWU notes that clinical work arrives early in its NP programs and tells students to have prospective preceptors in view well in advance.
Program length and time limits
IWU's program data and catalog give each program an expected length and an outer limit. A missed or repeated course eats into the space between the two.

Running past the limit leads to administrative withdrawal. Under the 2025-26 catalog, degrees for IWU's adult and online students are conferred monthly on the month's second Friday, shifting to the Friday before a ceremony in ceremony months. Because conferral comes monthly, your degree date tracks the end of your final course rather than a term boundary.
What the calendar means for your clinical hours
IWU's catalog marks FNP courses such as PYC-670 and PYC-681 as requiring supervised clinical experiences but does not say how many weeks each runs. When a clinical course sits toward the short end of the 7-to-15-week range, its hour target has to fit into fewer weeks, which asks more of your preceptor's schedule each week.
The front of each course is tight too. IWU's recent catalogs expect your Medatrax file (site and preceptor approvals, health records, compliance education) to be complete by week two of any practicum course, and a course only appears in Brightspace a week before it starts. A preceptor who is still deciding when the course opens leaves almost no margin.
IWU National & Global also has no add/drop period, so a course you engage in and then leave still counts toward your financial aid record. The rules for pausing or leaving a course are on our incompletes and course changes page.
Treat week two as the real deadline: under IWU's recent catalogs your approvals belong in Medatrax by then, so secure the placement before the course appears in Brightspace.

Does IWU online nursing have semesters?
No. IWU National & Global runs a non-traditional, modular calendar. Courses carry semester-hour credit but run one after another rather than inside a fall or spring term. IWU's Academic Calendars page covers the Marion residential campus only, so online students track their dates through Self-Service, Brightspace and their academic advisor.
How long are IWU nursing courses?
IWU's FNP certificate FAQ puts typical course length at 7 to 15 weeks, varying with the content and the clinical load. The MSN/MBA uses shorter courses of 2 to 10 weeks, and the Health Systems Leadership certificate uses 8-week courses. The catalog does not print clinical course lengths, so check the dates on your own schedule.
Can I take two IWU nursing courses at once?
The NP programs are designed around one course at a time in a fixed order with your cohort, and the catalog registers you for every course in the major when you begin. The RN-to-BSN recommends a maximum of two core courses at once. Talk to your academic advisor before changing your sequence.
When does the next IWU FNP cohort start?

How many hours a week does an IWU NP course take?
IWU estimates about 10 to 15 hours a week of coursework, and clinical hours come on top. In a practicum course, add the time you spend with your preceptor each week, which depends on the course's hour target and how many weeks the course runs. Plan your RN work schedule around both.
