myIWU Portal, Brightspace and the systems behind your IWU practicum
Most of your IWU life runs through a handful of connected systems. The myIWU Portal and its National & Global Hub are the front door, Self-Service on Colleague handles registration and billing, Brightspace holds your courses and the nursing handbook, and Outlook is where IWU contacts you. Placement approvals sit apart from all of them, in the compliance system IWU's recent catalogs name as Medatrax.

IWU's student systems at a glance
Each system has one main job. Knowing which is which saves time when a faculty member asks for a document or a date and you need to find it fast.

Brightspace and Outlook both use single sign-on through your IWU Microsoft account, so the same account opens most of the list.
myIWU Portal and the National & Global Hub
The myIWU Portal is IWU's student portal, built on SharePoint Online. IWU's IT knowledge base describes it as the main point of contact for online resources. From it you open Brightspace and Outlook, reach IWU forms and look up your academic advisor on the Academic Advisors page of the student success site.
Online and adult students have their own area inside it, the National & Global Hub. When you are unsure where a resource for IWU National & Global students lives, the Hub is the place to begin. Spiritcare, the chaplaincy for National & Global students, is reachable through the portal as well.
Two more services round out the online community. Wildcat Connect, hosted on Inscribe, is where students trade questions and resources with peers, and course materials come through Slingshot, IWU's chosen distributor, with some materials delivered digitally inside Brightspace. If a portal page will not load or a link breaks, the IT Support Center takes tickets at support.indwes.edu and keeps a knowledge base at kb.indwes.edu; it is staffed on weekdays.
Brightspace: courses, syllabi and the nursing handbook
Brightspace, made by D2L, is IWU's learning management system. Each course opens to students seven days before its start date, and that first week is the best moment to read the syllabus for clinical expectations: hour targets, how encounters are recorded, evaluation dates and any residency or intensive.
Brightspace is also where the School of Integrated Health Student Handbook lives. IWU's 2026-27 catalog says the handbook is located within each course, so you will not find it on the public website. Neither the DNP Project Manual nor the NP Clinical Guidelines, both cited by the catalog for practicum detail, is public either; ask course faculty where they sit for your cohort, and see our NP Clinical Guidelines page for what to look up first.
Two quieter functions matter too. Brightspace activity is what IWU measures as engagement for its withdrawal and financial aid rules, and for Brightspace courses the withdrawal date used when funds are returned is your last date of engagement. Built-in study tools include Academic Writer, Grammarly, ReadSpeaker/TextAid and the Lumi Tutor AI study aid, and a Brightspace Pulse mobile app is available.
Self-Service on Colleague
Self-Service is the administrative side of your program: registration, your course schedule, academic progress and payments. It runs on Colleague, IWU's student records system, and it replaced the older DataConnect and WebAdvisor tools, so any instructions that still mention those names are out of date.
For clinical planning, Self-Service is the fastest way to see the dates of each course in your sequence. IWU's catalog enrolls master's nursing students in all of their major courses when they begin, so check your upcoming practicum courses there as soon as you enroll and note when each begins. Keep an eye on the payments view as well. Under the 2025-26 catalog, tuition refunds after a withdrawal are prorated by the week of the course in which you ask, so look at your account before and after any course change.
Outlook email: the one channel IWU uses
Every student gets an IWU Student Email account in Office 365, with an address in the first.last@myemail.indwes.edu format, plus Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel and Teams. IWU's catalog states that this is the only email account the university uses to contact students.
That makes it the channel for everything placement-related: faculty feedback on a proposed preceptor, requests for missing documents, residency details and notes from your advisor. Check it daily during a practicum course and write to faculty from it, so every thread sits in one searchable place. Some IWU processes run through email by design; a nursing incomplete, for example, starts with an email request to your instructor.
Library, advisor and the offices behind the systems
The systems are only as useful as the people who answer questions about them. These are the IWU services and offices online nursing students deal with most.
- Online Campus Library Services (OCLS): APA help, Personalized Search Plans, paper reviews, Academic Writer support, interlibrary loan and a nursing-databases tutorial. Through Academic Libraries of Indiana, students in the state can also use other Indiana academic libraries. The Marion campus library is Jackson Library.
- Academic advisor: assigned to each student, before the start date in the FNP certificate. Advisors reach out by phone, email and text and meet by phone, email or Microsoft Teams.
- Office of Learner Success: withdrawals and temporary leave, and, with the Program Leader, the timing of a retake.
- Student Engagement & Success: incompletes and appeals under the general CAPS rules.
- Office of Student & Faculty Support Services: holds on engagement withdrawals, a role added in 2026-27.

Where placement paperwork fits, and why students choose us
The course systems above are not where IWU approves a preceptor. IWU's 2024-25 and 2025-26 catalogs send three kinds of preparatory item to Medatrax (approvals of the site and preceptor, health requirements and compliance education) and warn of possible dismissal for anyone whose items are still missing once a practicum course reaches its second week. The 2026-27 pages leave that line out, so ask faculty which system your cohort uses. Our Medatrax guide covers what goes in.
That approval file is where we add the most value. Your placement advisor locates a preceptor and site near home that match your IWU course, then gathers and checks the preceptor's credentials, license, site details and the records IWU asks for, so what you submit is complete and matches IWU's rules the first time. IWU gives the final approval. Your advisor remains on call until the course ends and opens a replacement search if a preceptor drops. Questions IWU students ask
What is the IWU student portal called?
It is the myIWU Portal, built on SharePoint Online and reached at myemailindwes.sharepoint.com or myiwu.indwes.edu. Online and adult students use its National & Global Hub. From the portal you can open Brightspace and Outlook, find forms and look up your academic advisor.
Where is the IWU nursing student handbook?
Inside Brightspace. According to IWU's 2026-27 catalog, the handbook for the School of Integrated Health sits within each course, so it becomes available when a course opens, seven days before the start date. IWU also keeps the NP Clinical Guidelines and DNP Project Manual off its public site; ask course faculty where to find them.
What LMS does Indiana Wesleyan use?
Brightspace by D2L, at brightspace.indwes.edu, with single sign-on through your IWU Microsoft account. IWU National & Global courses run asynchronously there, and Brightspace activity is what IWU counts as engagement under its withdrawal and financial aid rules, so regular posting and submitting matters during clinical weeks too.
Is IWU Self-Service the same as WebAdvisor?
Self-Service replaced the older DataConnect and WebAdvisor tools. It runs on Colleague and handles registration, your schedule, academic progress and payments at selfservice.indwes.edu. If an older guide or message points you to WebAdvisor, use Self-Service instead, and ask your academic advisor if something you need seems to be missing.
Are IWU clinical hours logged in Brightspace?
IWU's public sources do not say where hours are logged. The 2024-25 and 2025-26 catalogs point to Medatrax for approvals, health records and compliance training, yet neither mentions hours being recorded there. Your course syllabus in Brightspace is the place to check how your cohort records hours and encounters.
