IWU's own placement rules
Does IWU place its nurse practitioner students? IWU's program pages put the search on the student: you identify possible preceptors and sites, working with program faculty, then submit documentation so the university can vet and approve each one. No IWU placement office or site database appears in its public materials. Marion BSN students are the exception, since IWU places them in faculty-led clinical groups.
Is this about Illinois Wesleyan? No. IWU here means Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, at indwes.edu, including its online IWU National & Global programs. Illinois Wesleyan is a separate school with its own rules and its own website.
Who pays placement costs? IWU's catalog policy on nursing practice experience costs makes any cost of clinical placement the student's responsibility, including a facility's charge. Compliance items such as the second background check and drug screen are also at the student's expense. Our cost page explains what shapes a quote for our service.
Getting started with us
What do you need from me to begin? Your IWU program, the code of your next practicum course, your city, the states where you hold an RN license and your course start date. With those, your placement advisor can start searching and tell you what IWU will need to see.
When should I reach out? As soon as you know which practicum course comes next. IWU's FNP certificate page notes that clinicals begin early in the program and advises lining up preceptors ahead of time, so earlier contact means more choice. IWU's MSN and certificate NP programs start in January, May and August, and each practicum course deserves its own lead time. How it works walks through each step.
Do you help students outside Indiana? Yes. We search in your own community wherever you live and hold an RN license, which matches how IWU describes clinical training. The state guides cover each state's board and rules.
Approval and paperwork
Who approves my preceptor and site? IWU does. The university vets and approves every site and preceptor and names its School of Nursing as the approving body. We prepare the credentials, license and site details so your submission is complete when it reaches IWU. Oversight continues after approval, since IWU faculty make site visits and evaluate every FNP clinical course.
What is Medatrax? It is the system IWU's 2024-25 and 2025-26 catalogs name for site and preceptor approvals, health requirements and compliance education, with a warning for students who have not submitted by the second week of a practicum course. IWU's 2026-27 online nursing pages are silent on it, so check your syllabus for the system in use now. Our Medatrax guide covers it in full.
Programs we cover
Do you help leadership, education and DNP students? Yes. MSN Health Systems Leadership students complete 520 practicum hours across seven courses, Nursing Education students complete NRE-664 and NRE-695, and every IWU DNP track requires at least 1,000 practicum hours. We match mentors and settings to each, as the programs hub shows.
What about RN-to-BSN students? The RN-to-BSN has no fixed clinical hour count, but its NUR-492 capstone includes an immersive practicum and a quality-improvement project. Many students use their own workplace when faculty oversight, learning objectives and preceptor qualifications are met. We step in when a different site suits the project better.

Can I chat with someone before filling in a form?
Yes. The chat button on every page reaches the placement desk, and the WhatsApp and text links on the site open a message to the same team. Tell us your program and next course, and a placement advisor can answer questions before you decide anything.
What happens after I send my details?
Your placement advisor reviews your program, course and location, then replies by email, text or call with next steps and a quote. Once you go ahead, the search begins, and you hear from us as preceptor options take shape and as the file for IWU comes together.
Can I do my clinicals where I work?
Sometimes. An IWU article on its RN-to-BSN pathway says practicum hours at a student's own workplace may qualify if faculty oversight, learning objectives and preceptor qualifications are met, and your faculty confirm what applies to your course. Our workplace guide covers the conditions, and we find an outside site when a workplace falls short.
What if my preceptor quits partway through a course?
Tell us the same day. We start a replacement search right away, focused on preceptors who fit the course you are in, and prepare the new file for IWU's approval. Let your course faculty know as well. Preceptor dropped out explains the steps in order.
Do you find sites for the PMHNP therapy courses?
Yes. IWU's PMHNP sequence moves from psychiatric assessment into three Psychotherapeutic Modalities courses of 175 hours each, covering individual therapy, then family and group work, then diverse clients with multiple conditions. We look for preceptors whose practice includes the therapy exposure each of those courses needs.
Does IWU work with you or recommend you?
No. We are an independent placement team built around IWU's process. IWU's part is to vet and approve every site and preceptor you submit and to guide your courses through its faculty. Our part is to find the preceptor and prepare what IWU reviews, so your submission is ready the first time.
