Faculty site visits and evaluations in IWU clinical courses
IWU tells FNP students that faculty make site visits and run evaluations in every clinical course. Those evaluations look at your progress and at how well your preceptor and site are working. IWU publishes the principle but not the paperwork, so this page sets out what is known and how students and preceptors can get ready.

What IWU says about site visits
The statement comes from the FAQ on IWU's post-graduate FNP certificate page, which shares its clinical courses with the MSN FNP. In each clinical course, faculty make site visits and conduct evaluations. Those evaluations assess the student's progress and also the effectiveness of the preceptor and the clinical site.
For an FNP student, that means oversight follows you through PYC-660, PYC-670 and the three lifespan courses, PYC-681 to PYC-683. A new course usually means a new set of objectives, and often a new preceptor, so expect faculty attention to restart each time.
No equivalent public statement exists for the PMHNP, DNP, leadership or education tracks. Students in those programs should look to their syllabus and program faculty for how clinical oversight works in their courses.
What IWU leaves to the syllabus
IWU's public pages stop at the principle. They do not say whether a visit happens in person or by another method, how long it lasts, when in the course it falls, or which evaluation forms the preceptor and student complete. The log format and evaluation schedule are not public either.
Those details belong to the NP Clinical Guidelines and your course syllabus, and they can differ between courses. Read both when each course opens, note the evaluation due dates, and share them with your preceptor in the first week. Our NP Clinical Guidelines page lists the other questions worth answering early.
Put evaluation due dates on your preceptor's calendar during week one, so the paperwork never becomes the thing that slows your course.
What evaluations look at
IWU names three subjects for its FNP evaluations: you, your preceptor and your site. The course descriptions suggest what progress looks like for you. PYC-660 centers on comprehensive assessment, differential diagnosis and ordering tests; PYC-670 on health promotion and diagnostic reasoning in family primary care; the lifespan courses on managing acute and chronic disease.
The stakes are real. PYC courses require at least a B. A failed course triggers administrative withdrawal from the lock-step program, and a second unsatisfactory grade ends in dismissal. The Division of Nursing can also place a student on a Performance Improvement Plan, or remove a student at once from the clinical setting for serious infractions.
For the preceptor and site, evaluation asks whether the placement supports the course: enough of the right patients, real teaching and a workable schedule. The failing a clinical course page explains the grade rules in full.
How students prepare
- Keep your hour and encounter log current every clinical day, not the night before a visit.
- Know where you stand against the course target and against the program minimums for adult, women's health and pediatric encounters.
- Give your preceptor the visit or evaluation dates as soon as you have them.
- Have a few recent patient cases ready to discuss, showing your reasoning and plan.
- Raise problems early. If the patient mix is thin or hours are slipping, tell faculty before the visit rather than during it.
Accuracy matters above everything else. IWU dismisses any student who falsifies clinical or practicum hours, with no re-entry to its Masters Nursing programs. The clinical logs and integrity page covers good logging habits, and the patient encounters page shows how to track each count.
What preceptors should expect
A preceptor who agrees to host an IWU FNP student is also agreeing to IWU's oversight. Expect contact from course faculty during the course and an evaluation of the student to complete. IWU's evaluations also consider how well the preceptor and site support learning, so the teaching itself is part of what faculty look at.
IWU does not publish the time a visit takes or the forms involved, which is one reason a student should share the course syllabus with the preceptor early. PMHNP, doctoral and leadership tracks
Other tracks have their own forms of oversight. IWU's MSN PMHNP web page describes live OSCE psychiatric evaluations with trained actors, and PMHN-693 adds interprofessional simulation with an onsite intensive. These sit alongside the community clinical hours rather than replacing them.
Doctoral students work under a different arrangement. Their practicum hours need approval from course faculty or a designated academic leader, DNP-811 pairs project implementation with a mentor and DNP-840 is built on direct mentorship. How faculty monitor those settings is described in the DNP Project Manual rather than on public pages.
Leadership and education practicums, such as HSL-688P and NRE-695, have no public site-visit statement. Their syllabi set the evaluation process. One detail stands out for education students: NRE-664 places them with a master's-prepared preceptor in a clinical nursing practice area, so check the syllabus for what that preceptor is asked to complete.

Questions IWU students ask
Are IWU faculty site visits done in person?
IWU's public pages say faculty make site visits and run evaluations in each FNP clinical course, but they do not describe the format. Whether a visit is in person or handled another way is set out in your syllabus and the NP Clinical Guidelines. Ask course faculty in the first week if it is not clear.
How often do IWU faculty visit a clinical site?
IWU's FNP certificate FAQ ties visits and evaluations to each clinical course, so every FNP clinical course carries its own oversight. The number of contacts per course and their timing are not published. Check the syllabus for evaluation dates as soon as the course opens.
Does IWU evaluate my preceptor as well as me?
Yes. IWU says its evaluations assess the effectiveness of the preceptor and the site, not only the student's progress. A placement that is not supporting the course objectives can come to light this way, which is one more reason to raise concerns with faculty early.
What if my site visit raises a problem?
IWU does not publish a set procedure for this. Its catalog does allow a Performance Improvement Plan, or immediate removal from the clinical setting for serious infractions, and PYC courses need a B or better. Talk openly with course faculty about the concern and the plan to fix it.
Do PMHNP students at IWU get site visits?
IWU's public site-visit statement comes from its FNP certificate page, and no matching statement exists for the PMHNP track. The PMHNP program page does describe OSCE-style psychiatric evaluations run live with trained actors. Your PMHNP syllabus sets out how your clinical hours are overseen.
