When a missing preceptor pushes back your IWU graduation
At IWU, a practicum course you cannot start on time can move your finish line, because courses run one at a time in a fixed order with your cohort. Most of that damage is avoidable if the gap is caught early. Here is how a delay unfolds under IWU's rules, where the costly thresholds sit, and how we help keep it to a single course.

Why one course moves the whole plan
IWU National & Global runs its master's nursing majors as an accelerated cohort. You are registered for every course in the major at the start, you take one course at a time, and each course has weekly deadlines. The FNP and PMHNP sequences are lock-step, so the next clinical course waits until the one before it is complete.
That structure is efficient when every site is ready and unforgiving when one is not. A preceptor who falls through a week before PYC-681 can leave you unable to begin it, and every later course then shifts along with it.
The catalog also warns that a returning student's cohort placement may be delayed because of enrollment limits. In practice, missing one course can cost more than one course's worth of time. The same lock-step logic sits behind IWU's rules on failing a clinical course.
The thresholds that raise the cost
IWU's catalog sets several markers that turn a short pause into a longer one. Knowing them tells you how much room you really have.

The six-month mark is the one to watch. Past it you pay for the competency exams yourself, and a student who fails them after two attempts must audit the course before re-enrolling.

Sometimes the right call is to pause rather than open a clinical course with no approved site. Handle it through IWU's channels, in this order.

Graduation dates are more flexible than they look
A delay changes when you finish coursework, but IWU's conferral calendar softens the blow. Since September 2025, IWU National & Global has conferred degrees on the second Friday of each month, moving to the Friday before a ceremony in ceremony months. Ceremonies are held in spring and winter.
So a one-course delay does not have to mean waiting for a single annual date. What it can affect is your certification exam timing, a job offer tied to a start date, or a pay change at work. Tell an employer early if your date moves.

How we keep a delay to one course
The fastest way to recover lost time is to stop it happening twice. When a missing preceptor has already cost you a course, we search for the retake course and the next clinical course together, so both sites are approved before you return.

Questions IWU students ask
Will IWU hold my place in my cohort if I miss a clinical course?
The catalog says the Office of Learner Success arranges your retake with the Program Leader, but it also warns that cohort placement may be delayed for a returning student because of enrollment limits. Ask for your expected return course in writing when you arrange the withdrawal, and plan your next preceptor around that date.
What happens if I am out of IWU courses for more than six months?
IWU requires NP students returning after more than six months away to pass track-specific competency exams in advanced pharmacology, pathophysiology and physical assessment, and to send in a recorded complete history and physical, paying for both themselves. Curriculum changes also apply after six months, and a longer absence can mean reapplying under the catalog in force when you return.
How long do I have to finish an IWU MSN or DNP?
IWU's catalog sets four years for the MSN and the DNP and six years for the BSN-to-DNP; the ASN-to-MSN FNP allows five. Missing the limit leads to administrative withdrawal. A single delayed course rarely threatens this, but repeated pauses can add up faster than students expect.
Does sitting out a course affect my financial aid?
It can. IWU warns that a temporary withdrawal may affect aid eligibility under satisfactory academic progress rules, and withdrawals count as attempted but not earned hours. Raise it with your academic advisor before the course start date, when you still have the most options.
Can a placement service prevent a graduation delay?
