IWU publishes three different totals for its psychiatric-mental health NP: 820 practicum hours in the 2026-27 catalog, 525 on the MSN web page, and 785 when you add up the six PMHN course pages. The course pages are your best planning tool, because they are the only place IWU gives PMHNP hours course by course.

Three totals from one university
All three figures come from IWU's own pages, and none of them mentions the others. The catalog entries also attach onsite requirements to the hours, which matter for your calendar even though IWU does not say whether that time counts toward the total. Hours in each PMHN course
The PMHNP is the NP track where IWU prints clinical hours for each course, which makes it easier to plan than the FNP. Each figure below comes from the course's 2026-27 catalog page.

Two PMHN courses are purely didactic, PMHN-620 Neuro-Psychopharmacology and PMHN-622 Diagnostic Reasoning, as are the shared role, pathophysiology and pharmacology courses. IWU prints no prerequisites for individual PMHN courses; the program runs in a prescribed sequence, described further on our PMHNP clinical courses page.
Reading the gaps between 820, 785 and 525
Start with the 35 hours separating 820 from 785. IWU does not say where they come from, and no course page accounts for them, so ask your program faculty and check each syllabus instead of guessing.
The 525 on the web page is further off. Multiply the 175 hours in each psychotherapy course by three and you get exactly 525, but IWU does not say whether that is what the page is counting. Treat the match as arithmetic, not as an explanation.
Plan preceptor time to 820 until faculty confirm a different figure in writing. The per-course numbers remain the best guide to what each course will ask of a preceptor, and that is the first thing a psychiatric clinician will want to know before saying yes.
Planning to 525 would leave you nearly 300 hours short of the catalog figure. Treat 820 as your working total.
The psychotherapy courses: 525 hours together
The heaviest stretch of the program is the three Psychotherapeutic Modalities courses. The first, PMHN-630, works with individual patients; the second, PMHN-640, adds family and group therapy in varied settings; the third, PMHN-650, covers diverse clients living with multiple conditions. Together they make up about two-thirds of the 785 hours printed on the course pages.
That progression shapes your placement plan. A preceptor with a strong individual-therapy caseload fits PMHN-630 well, but PMHN-640 calls for family or group work, so find out early whether your site offers it or whether you need a second preceptor for that course.
IWU publishes no setting rules for the PMHNP. Your course faculty and the NP Clinical Guidelines are where to confirm that a site's patient mix fits each course before you log a single hour there.
Certificate, ASN-to-MSN and BSN-to-DNP students
Both the associate-entry route and the post-graduate PMHNP certificate carry the 820-hour catalog figure and use the same six PMHN clinical courses. The certificate adds a residency in its final course on top of the health-assessment residency, and IWU's program data puts it at about 26 months over eight courses. ASN-to-MSN students complete 17 bridge credits first, then follow the lock-step order into the PMHN sequence, over roughly 45 months and 19 courses.
BSN-to-DNP PMHNP students take parallel DNP-numbered courses: 75 hours in DNP-752, 150 in DNP-728, 175 in each of DNP-790, DNP-791 and DNP-792, and a 2-day onsite intensive in DNP-793. Those hours build toward the doctorate's 1,000-hour minimum, explained on our DNP hours page.

Questions IWU students ask
What is the total clinical hour requirement for IWU's PMHNP?
IWU's current catalog requires a minimum of 820 practicum hours for the PMHNP in all three forms: the MSN, the ASN-to-MSN and the certificate. Against that, the MSN web page shows 525, and the six course pages total 785. Use 820 for planning, and ask your program faculty which figure your syllabus applies.
Why does IWU's PMHNP web page say 525 hours?
IWU gives no explanation. The number matches the three Psychotherapeutic Modalities courses added together, each listed at 175 hours, but nothing on the page says those are the hours it means. Because the catalog sets 820, the lower figure is not a safe basis for scheduling preceptors.
Does the PMHNP onsite intensive count toward clinical hours?
The PMHN-693 course page lists 35 clinical hours plus an onsite intensive, and the program entries list two onsite intensives and a residency as requirements alongside the 820 hours. Does IWU's PMHNP use simulation or OSCEs?
Yes. According to IWU's MSN PMHNP page, students complete live psychiatric OSCEs with trained actors, and PMHN-693 is built around interprofessional simulation. IWU does not say whether simulation time counts toward practicum hours beyond the 35 hours printed for PMHN-693, so confirm with course faculty.
Which certification can IWU PMHNP graduates sit for?
The catalog lists ANCC and AANP as the bodies through which MSN PMHNP graduates may seek PMHNP certification. The BSN-to-DNP PMHNP web page names the PMHNP-BC credential. Ask program faculty which records IWU supplies for a certification application, and keep your own copy of every approved clinical hour.
