What the psychiatric doctorate involves
The PMHNP route of IWU's BSN-to-DNP is listed at 73 to 77 credits in the catalog, while the program record says 76. IWU's program page describes about 48 months of study with a 78-month maximum, so this is the longest psychiatric route IWU offers, compared with 28 months for the MSN PMHNP.
The doctorate pairs full PMHNP preparation with a DNP project. Graduates are eligible to sit for the PMHNP certification exam, and IWU's web page names PMHNP-BC. CCNE accredits IWU's DNP program, with its current term running to 2030.
Clinical hours are completed in your own community with preceptors IWU approves, while residencies and the final intensive bring you onsite. If you are weighing this route against the master's, the MSN PMHNP page shows the shorter path with 820 practicum hours.
The DNP-790s and the other psychiatric clinical courses
The PMHNP courses carry DNP numbers but track the MSN's psychiatric sequence closely, down to the 175-hour psychotherapy courses. DNP-720 and DNP-722 (2 credits each) have no clinical component.

Those listed hours total 750. The remaining 250 or more toward the 1,000-hour minimum accrue elsewhere in the program: IWU's BSN-to-DNP materials say hours come from course-assigned clinical time plus work that faculty approve, as set out in the DNP Project Manual and NP Clinical Guidelines. Neither manual is public, so confirm the count with your course faculty; the DNP 1,000-hour rule explains the framework.
The psychiatric courses list 750 hours; the other 250 or more come from project and faculty-approved work, so track them from day one.
Residencies and the DNP-793 intensive
IWU's sources disagree here, and the catalog even disagrees with itself. One sentence in the PMHNP catalog entry says three onsite residencies; a later line describes three residencies for the DNP project plus two for PMHNP education. IWU's program web page lists three residencies plus a two-day onsite intensive in the final course, DNP-793.
The safe reading is to expect at least three residencies and the DNP-793 intensive, and to hold room for two more until faculty confirm your cohort's schedule. The only IWU DNP page that names a location, the Systems Leadership one, puts its residencies in Marion; ask where yours are held and book time off early. Marion residencies gathers the onsite requirements by program.

Project courses, mentors and the cultural practicum
Alongside the psychiatric sequence, both BSN-to-DNP tracks share the project and practice courses. DNP-810 Assessment and Planning for Evidence-Based Practice takes place in a practice setting and produces your formal DNP project proposal. DNP-811 covers implementation and regulatory approvals and runs with a mentor. DNP-812 handles evaluation, sustainability and public dissemination of findings.
The cultural course, DNP-835 Healthcare Across Cultures, involves a regional practicum, and DNP-840 Advanced Nursing Practice Roles runs through direct mentorship. IWU does not state who arranges project settings or mentors, so raise the question with faculty during your first year.
Hours in these courses count only once approved by course faculty or the designated academic leader. Log every one honestly: falsifying clinical or practicum hours means immediate dismissal, as clinical logs and integrity explains.
Securing psychiatric preceptors and clearing IWU's approval
IWU's NP rule applies to your psychiatric clinical courses: "Students are responsible for securing clinical sites and preceptors." With program faculty in the loop, you find the preceptor, submit the paperwork IWU asks for, and wait for the university to vet and approve both preceptor and site.
Choose preceptors by course, not just by specialty. DNP-752 and DNP-728 need psychiatric assessment and interviewing opportunities, since they build the evaluation and documentation skills the later courses assume, while DNP-790 through DNP-792 need a practice with steady psychotherapy work, moving toward family, group and multi-condition care as the MSN's parallel courses do.
Before any patient contact, clear the drug screen, the TB, rubella and hepatitis B status documentation the BSN-to-DNP catalog lists, the APRN second background check, and any site requirement. IWU's recent catalogs direct approvals, health records and compliance training into Medatrax, and anything missing by week two of a practicum course risks dismissal.
Licenses, states and the older disclosure
Your RN license must be active and unencumbered in each state where you train, and a problem on any of your licenses ends in administrative withdrawal. That makes a move across state lines mid-program a placement question as well as a licensing one.
The 2022 IWU disclosure covering the BSN-to-DNP PMHNP finds the curriculum meets educational requirements in every state, with extra steps flagged for New York, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. A 2020 version is still linked from the same IWU page, and it names just five states (Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan), with the rest "not yet determined". Rely on the 2022 document, and ask IWU directly if your state raises doubts; licensure disclosures reviews them program by program.
