IWU's MSN in Health Systems Leadership carries seven practicum courses: six 1-credit courses of 65 hours each and the 3-credit HSL-688P capstone at 130 hours, for 520 in total. The seven practicum courses
Each practicum course in IWU's 2026-27 catalog is tied to a didactic course, taken alongside it or before it, except the capstone, which comes after everything else. The course pages give credits and hours directly, and the seven add up to 520, matching the figure on IWU's program web pages.

The two GNUR practicums
GNUR-529P follows GNUR-501 and runs with or after GNUR-529 Epidemiology & Care of Populations. Its 65 hours focus on community population health and disease prevention, so the natural sites are a local health department, a community health organization, a school or employer health program, or a hospital's population health team, led by a nurse who works at the community level.
GNUR-532P also follows GNUR-501 and pairs with GNUR-532. It brings advanced pharmacology, physical assessment and pathophysiology together around clinical judgment for patients, families and communities. A clinical nurse leader, nurse educator on a unit or advanced clinician in a care setting you know is a good fit, because the course asks you to connect bedside reasoning with larger patterns of care.
Both practicums must be complete, along with the GNUR core, before HSL-680P can start. IWU does not publish preceptor qualifications for HSL practicums, so confirm with faculty what credentials your leader needs before you ask.
The four HSL leadership practicums
The HSL practicums each run 65 hours alongside or after their matching leadership course, and each asks for a different kind of leader:
HSL-680PTransformative Leadership: professional identity and interprofessional leadership. A nurse director or chief nursing officer who leads across disciplines fits well.HSL-682PPractice Leadership: population-focused care and safe work environments. One organization may be able to host several of these courses if it gives you access to different leaders. The post-graduate HSL certificate uses exactly these four practicums, about 260 hours, which IWU says students usually complete where they already work or at another approved site.
The HSL-688P capstone
HSL-688P Nursing Leadership Capstone Practicum is the largest single block: 3 credits and 130 hours, taken only after all prior HSL courses and practicums. The catalog describes it as an immersion in which you design and implement an evidence-based project, and IWU's MSN HSL web page leaves the capstone location to your choice.
Choose that location for the project, not only the preceptor. You need a leader who can sponsor the work, open doors to data and staff, and give you enough runway to implement within the course. Organizations where you have already done an earlier practicum often make the capstone smoother because the relationships exist.

How the route you are on changes the details
- MSN HSL: 34 credits, 12 core and 22 HSL, about 24 months over 14 courses, with the capstone at a location you choose.
- ASN-to-MSN HSL: 51 credits in the catalog (the web page says 53), about 36 months, with the same seven practicums after the bridge courses.
- Post-MBA MSN: a 30-credit route for nurses who have an MBA already; its 520 practicum hours are supervised and onsite, and the host agency must give permission before the first hour is logged.
- MSN/MBA dual degree: 60 credits and 520 clinical hours at sites you secure and the School of Nursing approves, no residency, courses of 2 to 10 weeks one at a time and March, June and December starts.
- Post-graduate HSL certificate: 19 credits, the four HSL practicums at about 260 hours, 8-week courses over about 9 months and January, May and August starts.

Questions IWU students ask
Can I do IWU HSL practicum hours at my own workplace?
For many students, yes. IWU's HSL certificate page says its practicum hours typically happen in the student's own workplace or another approved site, and the MSN HSL capstone runs at a location you choose. Sites still need approval, and the MSN/MBA and Post-MBA routes require the agency's permission before any hours begin.
Do IWU HSL practicum students need a preceptor?
According to IWU's catalog, all National & Global nursing programs contain practice experiences requiring either a clinical facility or a preceptor, and the Post-MBA route describes its 520 hours as supervised onsite practicum. IWU does not publish the credentials an HSL preceptor must hold, so ask faculty before you commit to a leader.
Is there a residency in IWU's HSL programs?
IWU's MSN/MBA page states that the dual degree has no residency, and the onsite residencies and intensives IWU describes elsewhere belong to its NP and DNP programs. HSL practicum hours take place at approved practicum sites, with the capstone at a location you choose.
