Indiana in IWU's licensure disclosures
Indiana lands in the meets column of every licensure disclosure on IWU's Student Consumer Information page, one of only five states that do. That covers the September 2022 disclosures for the MSN, certificate and BSN-to-DNP nurse practitioner tracks, and the June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure, which names only Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. IWU's catalog also lists approval from the Indiana State Board of Nursing, although the Board says its own reviews cover programs leading to first-time RN or LPN licensure, not graduate programs.

Marion, National & Global, and a short drive to residency
IWU's residential campus is at 4201 S. Washington St. in Marion, in Grant County. The online nursing programs belong to IWU National & Global, where the School of Integrated Health houses the Division of Nursing; its mailing address is the Marion Education and Conference Center, a site apart from the main campus. National & Global also runs Indiana education centers in Fort Wayne, Greenwood, Indianapolis North, Kokomo, Marion and Merrillville, with enrollment help, librarian support and study space.
For Hoosiers, the onsite parts of an NP program mean a drive up the highway rather than a flight. FNP students come to Marion for the health-assessment residency, PMHNP students for a residency plus two intensives, and BSN-to-DNP students for four residencies. Put those dates on the same calendar as your clinical days; the Marion residencies page sorts them by program.
Prescribing in Indiana runs through a written agreement
AANP rates Indiana a reduced-practice state because of prescribing. Under IC 25-23-1-19.4, an APRN works in collaboration with a licensed practitioner, shown by a practice agreement, or under hospital privileges that set out how the two cooperate and consult. That practitioner cannot be another APRN or a physician assistant. Indiana also issues no separate NP license: the APRN Prescriptive Authority license grants authority to prescribe, and the Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) says plainly that it is not a license to practice.
Rule 848 IAC 5-1-1 lists what the written agreement contains: both parties' names, Indiana license numbers and practice locations, their certifications, how they collaborate, and how the practitioner reviews prescribing. The APRN sends prescribing documentation within 7 days, covering at least a 5% random sample of charts and medications. Agreements are filed in MyLicense One, the PLA audits 1% to 10% of them every two years, and an APRN with no active agreement drops to Current/Not Practicing and may not prescribe.
The 2025–26 bills that stalled
The agreement requirement is still in force in 2026. The collaboration statute has not changed since P.L.127-2020, and the PLA licensing page still asks for a written agreement. Four bills moved in two directions, and none was found past its introduced version:
- HB 1116 (2025) would have removed the collaborating-physician agreement and its audits; it went to the Public Health committee on January 8, 2025.
- SB 246 (2025) pushed the other way, with same-specialty collaborators and a cap of four APRNs per physician; it went to committee on January 9, 2025.
- SB 60 (2026) would have ended the agreement and hospital-privilege route from July 1, 2026; it was referred to Health and Provider Services on December 8, 2025.
- HB 1129 (2026) matched SB 60 and was referred to Public Health on January 5, 2026.
Some national NP sites say Indiana adopted full practice authority in 2026. Neither the PLA page nor any enrolled bill backs that up. Licenses on both sides of the preceptorship
The research behind this page found no Indiana statute or rule requiring an NP student's preceptor to hold an Indiana license, and none governing how an out-of-state graduate program places students here. Anyone treating Indiana patients needs Indiana authority anyway: an Indiana or compact RN license, an APRN prescriptive license backed by an agreement, or an Indiana physician license. For you, IWU asks for an active, unencumbered RN license in every state where you have a practicum site. Indiana implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on July 1, 2020, so an Indiana RN license or a multistate license from another compact state covers clinicals here. Indiana has not enacted the APRN Compact. No Indiana preceptor tax credit was found; the Indiana Health Workforce Council reviewed Colorado's and Hawaii's credits as possible strategies in December 2024.
How IU Health, Franciscan and Deaconess take NP students
IU Health sends advanced practice provider students, NPs included, through its statewide Office of Clinical Education. You register one account, complete a profile and apply each semester in its online database: December 1 to February 1 for summer, March 1 to April 1 for fall, July 1 to September 1 for spring. IU Health strongly discourages cold-calling or walking in on its providers, treats that as a condition of its school agreements, and says an unmatched student may look outside the system.
Franciscan Health offers NP rotations at its Indianapolis, Mooresville and Carmel hospitals and in Franciscan Physician Network practices, places its own employees first, and requires a valid school affiliation agreement. Deaconess in Evansville also requires an active affiliation agreement plus school-provided liability insurance, tracks compliance in myClinicalExchange, and says it is not currently pursuing new affiliations. Where Indiana's nurse practitioners work
The Bowen Center's report on 2023 renewals, hosted by the Indiana Center for Nursing, identified 10,448 APRNs practicing in Indiana or serving Indiana patients by telemedicine, from a sample of 72,447 RNs; 125,518 RN licenses were renewed that year. Of those APRNs, 86.5% reported an NP role, 71.6% completed their qualifying education in Indiana, and outpatient clinics were the leading primary setting at 42.2%, ahead of hospitals at 27.8%. Primary care led specialties at 35.3% and psychiatry followed at 7.6%, so PMHNP students draw on a far smaller pool. The 2021 brief had counted 9,431 APRNs, 82.7% of them NPs.
Geography follows the systems. The Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood metro holds about 2.21 million people and hosts IU Health, Community Health Network and Franciscan facilities. Fort Wayne's metro, about 466,000 people, is Parkview's base, and Evansville is Deaconess country. Roughly 729,000 Hoosiers live in the Indiana share of the Chicago metro and 281,000 in the Indiana share of Louisville's. These are places where NP care clusters; none is named here as an IWU host. Questions IWU students ask
Does an Indiana NP preceptor need a collaborative practice agreement?
If the preceptor is an NP who prescribes, yes: Indiana requires a written agreement with a licensed practitioner, filed with the PLA, before an APRN can use prescriptive authority. A physician preceptor needs no such agreement. Whether a given clinician qualifies to precept you is IWU's call, set out in the NP Clinical Guidelines and confirmed when IWU approves the preceptor.
Can I apply to IU Health for an NP rotation on my own?
IU Health's Office of Clinical Education runs the application database, and students register, build a profile and apply each semester by clinical type. The office also confirms an educational affiliation agreement is in place with the school, so check with your program faculty before relying on that route, and keep to its windows rather than contacting providers directly.
Did Indiana give nurse practitioners full practice authority in 2026?
Not according to the PLA. SB 60 and HB 1129 would have removed the agreement requirement from July 1, 2026, but both were found only as introduced, and the licensing page still requires a written collaborative practice agreement for prescribing. Treat claims of 2026 full practice authority on national NP websites with caution.
I live in Ohio but want an Indiana clinical site. Which RN license do I need?
IWU asks for an active, unencumbered RN license valid where the site is. Indiana has been a Nurse Licensure Compact state since July 1, 2020, so a multistate license issued by your compact home state covers Indiana; a single-state license from elsewhere would mean adding an Indiana RN license first.
Can an Indiana resident enroll in IWU's ASN-to-MSN FNP?
Indiana is one of the five states the June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure lists as meeting educational requirements, alongside Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. Confirm your plans with IWU admissions before you enroll, since the ASN-to-MSN PMHNP route has no posted disclosure.
