The 500-hour RN requirement for IWU's NP programs
IWU's MSN FNP and PMHNP tracks, and both ASN-to-MSN NP routes, ask for at least 500 hours of RN direct patient care in the year before admission. The BSN-to-DNP lists no such minimum. Here is who the rule covers, what IWU leaves undefined, how it differs from IWU's other 500-hour figures, and how your bedside experience helps once the preceptor search starts.

Who the rule applies to
The catalog pages for IWU's MSN FNP and MSN PMHNP list at least 500 hours of RN direct patient care in the year before admission as an entry requirement. The ASN-to-MSN FNP and ASN-to-MSN PMHNP pages carry the same rule, so associate-prepared nurses meet it as well.

Other admission items sit beside it. For the MSN NP tracks that means a BSN from a CCNE-, ACEN- or CNEA-accredited program, an undergraduate GPA of 3.25, unencumbered licenses and a background check within six weeks of starting. The ASN-to-MSN routes start from an accredited associate degree instead.
What "direct patient care" and "the year before" leave open
IWU's public catalog gives the number and the window but no definition. It doesn't say which roles count as direct patient care, whether hours in a leadership or teaching role qualify, or how IWU verifies the total. Take those questions to IWU before you apply, and rely on the answer you receive in writing.
The window is the year before admission, so hours from several years back don't carry you. If you have been away from hands-on care for a while, rebuilding recent hours comes before the application.
Keep a running record as you work: dates, units and your role on each shift pattern. If IWU asks for proof, a schedule history or a letter from your manager is much easier to produce from notes than from memory.
Not the same 500: IWU's other 500-hour figures
Three separate IWU rules use the number 500, and mixing them up leads to planning mistakes.
- MSN and ASN-to-MSN NP admission: 500 hours of RN direct patient care in the year before admission.
- Post-graduate FNP and PMHNP certificates: current APRN certification plus 500 hours of APRN practice in the past year is one of three ways to satisfy the prerequisite courses. The other two are an IWU course passed with a B or better within a year of starting, or IWU competency exams.
- DNP in Systems Leadership: up to 500 practicum hours can transfer from master's-level clinical experience toward the 1,000-hour DNP minimum.
None of these stands in for another. RN hours before admission are not practicum hours, and APRN practice hours only matter for certificate prerequisites. Our page on the DNP's 1,000 hours covers the transfer in detail.
Short of 500 hours? Choose your start date with them in mind
Because the rule counts the year before admission, the start you pick shapes whether you qualify. The next-start dates on IWU's program pages, read in September 2026, are January 4, May 3 and August 23, 2027 for the MSN FNP and PMHNP, and November 17, 2026, March 2 and June 1, 2027 for the ASN-to-MSN NP routes. A later start can give you the months you need to reach 500.
The catalog doesn't say whether the year is measured back from your application, your acceptance or your first course. Ask IWU which date it uses, then count your hours against that date rather than a guess.
The same habit pays off after admission. IWU's NP clinicals begin early in the sequence, so the months before your first practicum course are the right time to start the preceptor conversation, not the week it opens.
The admission rule is step one of several
Meeting the 500 hours gets you in; clearance comes next. After you start, IWU asks for a background check within six weeks, then a second check, a drug screen, health clearance and immunizations before your first practicum course. Then the clinical workload begins. The MSN FNP catalog lists 850 supervised practicum hours and at least 800 patient encounters, and the PMHNP catalog lists 820 hours. IWU's own web pages quote lower figures, 700 for the FNP and 525 for the PMHNP, so check your syllabus for the number that governs your cohort; the clinical hours hub sets the conflicts side by side.
Clinicals start early in IWU's NP programs, and the FNP certificate page advises lining up possible preceptors in advance. Your RN hours are already banked; the preceptor search is the part still ahead.

Questions IWU students ask
Does part-time or PRN RN work count toward IWU's 500 hours?
IWU's catalog states the rule as an hour total, 500 hours of RN direct patient care in the year before admission, rather than a job type. It doesn't mention part-time or PRN work either way. If your hours come from several part-time or per-diem roles, total them with dates and confirm with IWU that the mix qualifies.
Does the 500-hour rule apply to IWU's BSN-to-DNP?
The BSN-to-DNP catalog pages list no RN experience-hours minimum. Admission asks for a BSN from a CCNE-, ACEN- or CNEA-accredited program, an undergraduate GPA of 3.25, an unencumbered RN license, a CV and a two-to-three page narrative. The 1,000 practicum hours inside the DNP are a separate requirement you meet as a student.
Do ASN-to-MSN students need 500 RN hours for IWU?
Yes. IWU's ASN-to-MSN FNP and PMHNP pages carry the same rule: at least 500 hours of RN direct patient care in the prior year. Bridge courses also need a C or better, with a GPA of at least 3.25, before the MSN clinical sequence. Our ASN-to-MSN page covers the bridge.
Do non-bedside nursing roles count as direct patient care at IWU?
IWU's public pages don't define direct patient care, so roles such as case management, education or informatics aren't addressed either way. Describe your role accurately in your application and ask IWU how it will be counted before you depend on it. Hours in a clearly hands-on role are the safest foundation.
Is the 500-hour RN rule the same as IWU clinical hours?
No. The 500 hours are RN work you complete before admission, in your own job. Clinical hours are supervised practicum hours you log as a student with a preceptor IWU has approved, 850 in the MSN FNP catalog and 820 for the PMHNP. Treat them as two separate ledgers.
