Illinois nurses in Indiana Wesleyan's online NP programs
First, the name: Indiana Wesleyan University (indwes.edu) is the school in Marion, Indiana, and Illinois Wesleyan University (iwu.edu) is a separate institution. For Illinois nurses, every IWU NP disclosure reads "meets", including the five-state ASN-to-MSN FNP sheet. Indiana Wesleyan's disclosures for Illinois
Illinois belongs to the short list of states IWU names as "meets" in all of its NP disclosures. The September 2022 set on IWU's Student Consumer Information page records Illinois as meeting requirements across the FNP, PMHNP and BSN-to-DNP offerings, and the June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure counts Illinois among its five. IWU also holds written authorization for onsite operations in Illinois. No ASN-to-MSN PMHNP disclosure has been posted, so confirm that track with admissions.

Illinois's written rule for out-of-state placements
Illinois puts its expectations in writing. Section 1300.340(n) of the state's nursing rules (68 Ill. Adm. Code) has an out-of-state school send IDFPR a five-part package: evidence of its home board's approval or its accreditation; a request letter covering dates, agencies and units; the syllabus; the executed facility contract; and forms on faculty qualifications and preceptors. An approval lasts two years, can be renewed and brings annual reporting, and the school's nursing faculty need Illinois RN licensure.
Two gray areas remain. The rule appears among the RN program-approval provisions, leaving open how it treats RN-to-BSN or graduate APRN programs. And 225 ILCS 65/50-15(b)(10), which lets RNs licensed elsewhere practice within graduate and baccalaureate-completion programs, refers to programs "in this State". How IWU applies both is its call, so ask your program faculty early.
Illinois preceptors, practice climate and search areas
Section 1300.340(j) sets preceptor basics for programs that use facility staff: program faculty approve and orient each preceptor, the preceptor stays physically available every time you provide care, and the preceptor's RN license must be valid where you are practicing. AANP rates Illinois reduced practice: in some settings NPs work under a physician collaborative agreement, and prescribing select Schedule II drugs and benzodiazepines hinges on experience, CE and a consultative relationship. Precepting also pays off at renewal time. An Illinois APRN who precepts one APRN student for a semester or quarter can count 10 CE hours, capped at 30 each renewal cycle, with the school's documentation.
Students look at Northwestern Medicine, OSF HealthCare, Endeavor Health, UChicago Medicine and Advocate Health Care, across the Illinois side of greater Chicago (about 8.7 million people), Illinois's share of greater St. Louis, Peoria and Rockford. None is an IWU partner.
An Illinois RN license for Illinois sites
Illinois has no pending compact legislation, so a multistate license from Indiana, Missouri or anywhere else carries no privilege here. To meet IWU's rule of an active, unencumbered RN license wherever you train, any Illinois site calls for an Illinois license from IDFPR. Illinois Wesleyan University uses iwu.edu and is an unrelated school. When you check program rules or disclosures, make sure you are on indwes.edu or catalog.indwes.edu.
Will my compact license cover an Illinois clinical site?
No. Illinois stands apart from the compact, and multistate licenses issued in Indiana, Missouri or other member states give no privilege there. IWU expects a current, unencumbered license wherever each practicum site is, which for an Illinois clinic means an Illinois license.
What does an Illinois preceptor get for teaching me?
