Indiana Wesleyan NP students living in Missouri
IWU's 2022 disclosures show Missouri as "meets" for its NP tracks, and Missouri's compact membership lets a multistate RN license cover your clinicals. Missouri is one of the more restrictive practice states for NPs, and its two biggest metros straddle state lines, so where your site sits matters as much as who precepts you.

Missouri's row in IWU's disclosures
IWU enrolls Missourians online as a member of NC-SARA. Licensure status is set out in the disclosures on its Student Consumer Information page, where the September 2022 versions show Missouri meeting educational requirements for the FNP and PMHNP tracks at the MSN and certificate levels and for both BSN-to-DNP NP options. IWU's June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP sheet leaves Missouri "not yet determined"; admissions can confirm where your program stands.

How Missouri treats students from out-of-state programs
Nothing the Missouri State Board of Nursing has published asks a school from another state to file for approval, or even to notify the Board, before its students train in Missouri. The Board's education rules at 20 CSR 2200-2 address the programs it approves directly. Under RSMo 335.081(6)(a), students of approved schools may practice under supervision; the statute doesn't address programs based outside Missouri. Program-level questions like that belong with IWU, so if a clinic raises one, point it to your program faculty.
Restricted practice and who precepts you
Missouri sits in AANP's most restrictive category. Its NPs never outgrow physician collaboration: the written arrangement lasts a whole career and comes with ratio limits, chart-review duties and controlled-substance restrictions. In a Missouri practice, you will often learn with an NP and a collaborating physician close at hand; IWU decides who counts as your preceptor under its NP Clinical Guidelines, summarized in IWU preceptor requirements.
Missouri does have a preceptor tax credit, RSMo 135.690, but it is reserved for physician and PA preceptors of Missouri medical and PA students. NP preceptors and nursing students fall outside it, so it has no bearing on your rotation.
Students commonly look at BJC HealthCare, Mercy, SSM Health, CoxHealth and MU Health Care, across the Missouri part of greater St. Louis (about 2.14 million people), Kansas City's Missouri side (about 1.33 million), Springfield and Columbia. None is an IWU partner; they simply show where the options cluster.
Licensing and the two border metros
The compact is part of Missouri law (RSMo 335.360 and following sections, in force since July 20, 2017), and multistate licenses have worked here since January 19, 2018. The border metros change the picture. Cross the river for a St. Louis-area clinic in Illinois and you need an Illinois license, since Illinois has stayed outside the compact; Illinois also runs its own approval rule for schools placing students there. Cross to the Kansas half of the Kansas City metro, and KSBN's guidance calls for a preceptor licensed as an APRN in Kansas. Our Illinois and Kansas guides cover both.

Questions IWU students ask
Does Missouri's preceptor tax credit cover my NP preceptor?
No. RSMo 135.690 limits the credit to physicians and PAs, licensed in Missouri, who teach the state's medical and PA students unpaid. Nurse practitioners and nursing students are not part of it, so an NP teaching you through IWU cannot claim it.
Can a physician precept my IWU FNP clinicals in Missouri?
That depends on IWU's preceptor criteria, which sit in the NP Clinical Guidelines instead of on IWU's public pages. Because Missouri NPs practice under a physician collaboration for their entire careers, physicians are closely involved in most NP practices. Ask your program faculty which preceptor types IWU approves for each course.
My best lead is on the Illinois side of the St. Louis metro. What changes?
Your license, first. Illinois gives multistate licenses no privilege, so an Illinois RN license becomes a must for that site under IWU's rule. Illinois also regulates placements by schools based in other states, which is IWU's side of the process, so ask faculty before you accept.
Does Missouri require IWU to register before I start clinicals?
Not according to anything the Board has published. Its rules concern programs it approves itself and say nothing about schools from elsewhere placing students in Missouri. Program questions belong with IWU, and your program faculty can answer them if a Missouri clinic asks.
