Mississippi students in IWU's online NP programs
IWU's 2022 disclosures mark Mississippi "meets" for its NP tracks, and a compact RN license works here. The unusual part is who oversees out-of-state programs: Mississippi's university governing board, known as IHL, reviews nursing degree programs that run clinicals in the state, and it asks for months of lead time.

Checking IWU's Mississippi status
IWU's NC-SARA membership covers online study from Mississippi, and SARA matters again in IHL's review below. For licensure, look at IWU's disclosure PDFs, linked from its Student Consumer Information page. Those dated September 2022 record Mississippi as meeting educational requirements for FNP and PMHNP study at both the MSN and certificate level, and for both BSN-to-DNP NP routes. On IWU's ASN-to-MSN FNP sheet from June 2024, Mississippi is "not yet determined"; IWU admissions can confirm your track before you enroll.

Why IHL, not the nursing board, reviews the program
Mississippi splits the job. Nursing-board approval there covers practical nursing programs only; degree programs that prepare or advance RNs sit with the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, known as IHL. Any out-of-state nursing degree program with Mississippi clinicals, undergraduate or graduate, is held to Mississippi standards, and IHL reads an in-state practicum as physical presence. The result is an IHL Nursing Education review that can last as long as three months.
Two more conditions apply. The school must either participate in SARA or hold non-SARA distance-education authorization through MCCA; IWU's NC-SARA membership answers that. And IHL's August 2024 procedures manual (Appendix S) tells schools governed from outside Mississippi to open that review no later than four months before their first Mississippi clinical. IWU's public sources don't say whether it has completed IHL's review, so ask your program faculty before you commit to a Mississippi site.
IHL's standards also want every graduate clinical student, APRN track or otherwise, licensed as an RN without encumbrance in whichever state hosts the clinical. That is the same line IWU draws.
Collaborative practice and where Mississippi students look
AANP lists Mississippi as reduced practice: NPs practice under a collaboration the Board approves, with a physician or dentist licensed in Mississippi. Expect NP-led clinics to name that collaborator. IWU's approval, though, turns on its own preceptor standards in the NP Clinical Guidelines; see IWU's published preceptor rules.
Students commonly check North Mississippi Health Services, UMMC, Singing River Health System and Forrest Health. Baptist Memorial Health Care, based in Memphis, counts Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson among its hospitals in the state. The main metros are Jackson (about 610,000 people), Gulfport-Biloxi, Hattiesburg and the Mississippi side of greater Memphis (about 278,000). These are places students search, not IWU partners.
Compact licensing, with a Memphis caveat
Compact licensing has applied in Mississippi since January 19, 2018. The Board's own explanation: keep your declared home in a compact state and your license in good standing, and you can work across the other compact states without an employer demanding a second, remote-state license. That is why a Mississippi multistate license, like one from any compact home state, is enough for IWU's licensing rule. Questions IWU students ask
Who reviews out-of-state nursing programs for clinicals in Mississippi?
IHL, through its Nursing Education office. Mississippi's nursing board handles LPN programs only, so RN degree programs, including graduate programs from other states with Mississippi clinicals, fall under IHL's standards and review. SARA participation, which IWU holds through NC-SARA, satisfies one of IHL's conditions; the nursing review itself is a separate step.
How long does IHL's review take?
Up to three months, by IHL's estimate, which is why its manual wants schools from elsewhere to ask for review four months or more ahead of the start. The request comes from the school, not from you, so ask IWU's program faculty where things stand before you line up a Mississippi preceptor.
Will a Mississippi clinic accept my multistate license from another compact state?
It should. Mississippi's Board says a multistate license from your declared compact home state carries a practice privilege here, and that employers may not require a separate remote-state license. The clinic will still verify your license during onboarding, and IWU checks it as part of approval.
I live on the Mississippi side of the Memphis metro. Can my site be in Tennessee?
Possibly, but the site's state governs. A Tennessee clinic follows Tennessee's rules for students and licensing, so confirm your license is valid there. IWU approves every site and preceptor wherever they are, so raise the idea with your program faculty before you ask a Memphis clinician.
