IWU nursing students in Louisiana: the approval step comes first
IWU's 2022 disclosures show its NP programs meeting Louisiana's educational requirements, but clinicals here hinge on something else: an out-of-state program needs a green light from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing before it places students in the state. What IWU's disclosures show for Louisiana
Online enrollment rests on IWU's NC-SARA membership; licensure questions are answered in the PDFs on its Student Consumer Information page. IWU's September 2022 disclosures for the FNP, PMHNP and BSN-to-DNP tracks list all 50 states as meeting educational requirements, with no Louisiana-specific note. The June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure shows Louisiana as "not yet determined". IWU keeps no public list of states it declines, so treat admissions as the authority and confirm Louisiana before you enroll.

Louisiana's rule for programs run from other states
Louisiana is one of the stricter states for distance programs. LAC 46:XLVII.3539 says an undergraduate or graduate nursing program controlled from another state needs Board of Nursing approval before it can teach or place students in Louisiana. The school files its request at least six months ahead.
The packet names every clinical agency and unit, and adds course syllabi, the curriculum, the catalog, a facility survey form, proof that faculty are qualified, and NCLEX and certification pass data. Home-state approval, regional accreditation and a Board-recognized national nursing accreditor are prerequisites. Each approval covers up to three years, after which the school may petition to renew.
The duties continue after approval. Any of the school's faculty instructing in Louisiana must carry Louisiana licensure as an RN or APRN, hold a master's or doctorate in nursing, and bring at least two years of clinical experience. In precepted clinicals, faculty hold a weekly conversation with preceptor and student and come on site at least once a term, and one faculty member may oversee no more than nine APRN students per clinical day.
For graduate students, the program sends the Board a clinical experience spreadsheet within two weeks of the start. You file none of this yourself, but it drives the calendar, so ask your program faculty early whether IWU holds Louisiana approval.
Collaborative practice and where Louisiana students search
AANP places Louisiana in its reduced-practice group, meaning NPs need a regulated collaborative agreement with a physician covering some part of what they do. Most NP preceptors you contact will have a collaborating physician in the background, and that physician may be a second option if IWU's criteria allow. Students search around New Orleans-Metairie (about 971,000 people), Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Shreveport-Bossier City. Familiar names include Ochsner Health, Baton Rouge General, LCMC Health, Willis-Knighton Health and FMOL Health (Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System). They show where the market is, not where IWU has agreements.
Licensing for Louisiana clinicals
Compact status helps. Louisiana has honored multistate licenses since July 1, 2019, so your multistate license, issued by Louisiana or another compact home state, works for IWU's license-where-you-train rule as long as it stays unencumbered. RNs and APRNs are licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, while practical nurses answer to a separate Board of Practical Nurse Examiners. The APRN Compact is not in force here. Does IWU hold Louisiana Board approval for clinicals?
IWU's public pages don't say. Louisiana requires out-of-state programs to hold Board approval before placing students in the state, and that approval lasts up to three years at a time. Ask IWU admissions or your program faculty directly, and get the answer before you enroll or commit to a Louisiana preceptor.
How far ahead should I plan Louisiana clinicals?
Further ahead than in most states. The school's approval request has to reach the Board at least six months before its Louisiana offering, and graduate programs report each clinical experience within two weeks of the start. IWU's own submission timing is in the NP Clinical Guidelines, so compare both calendars with your program faculty.
Will IWU faculty need a Louisiana license?
Yes, if they teach in Louisiana. LAC 46:XLVII.3539 expects Louisiana RN or APRN licensure, graduate preparation in nursing and two years in clinical practice from any out-of-state faculty member instructing there, along with weekly contact and a site visit each term. Those are IWU's obligations, but they explain why approval takes time.
Does a multistate license from Mississippi cover clinicals in Louisiana?
Yes, provided Mississippi is your declared home state and the license is active and unencumbered. Both states belong to the Nurse Licensure Compact. If Louisiana has become your home state, check the compact's primary-residence rules with the Louisiana board. The program-approval question stays the same either way.
