Indiana Wesleyan's online NP programs from Montana, and how your clinicals work there
You can study with Indiana Wesleyan University from Montana: IWU's 2022 licensure disclosures list Montana as meeting educational requirements for its MSN, certificate and BSN-to-DNP nurse practitioner tracks. The Montana Board of Nursing adds no approval step for graduate clinicals, so what remains is finding a preceptor near Billings, Bozeman, Missoula, Helena or your own town.

IWU's published position on Montana
IWU is an NC-SARA member. Its professional licensure disclosures dated September 2022 place Montana in the "meets" column for the MSN FNP, the MSN PMHNP, both post-graduate NP certificates and the two BSN-to-DNP tracks. The ASN-to-MSN FNP is the outlier: its June 2024 disclosure names five Midwest states and marks Montana "not yet determined".

Montana's Board leaves graduate clinicals to the program
Montana does screen out-of-state clinical placements, but ARM 24.159.608 targets programs that prepare people for their first nursing license. Those schools file a signed request with accreditation proof, a faculty supervision plan and word from Montana program directors that no local student is displaced.
Your IWU NP track sits outside that process. According to the Board's own FAQ, graduate and RN-to-BSN programs can run Montana clinicals without asking the Board first; the program simply has to be sure each student's license is valid in Montana. Faculty licensure is triggered only by hands-on patient care, so IWU faculty who follow you and your preceptor from Indiana stay in the clear.
Full practice authority widens the preceptor pool
AANP rates Montana a full-practice state: nurse practitioners there work without a required physician agreement. That makes an NP-owned family clinic in Bozeman or a rural health clinic outside Helena as realistic a target as a hospital outpatient practice.
IWU decides who qualifies. It vets and approves every site and preceptor, and the detailed criteria sit in the NP Clinical Guidelines, so read who can precept an IWU NP student before you approach anyone.
Where Montana NP students tend to look
The names you will hear most are Billings Clinic and Logan Health, now one combined system; Intermountain Health St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings; Benefis Health System; and Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. Treat them as a map of where care happens, not as places that take IWU students.
Montana's metros are small. Billings holds about 194,000 people and Bozeman, Missoula and Helena each fall under 130,000, so independent practices carry much of the load. FNP students should ask about patient volume early, because IWU's catalog expects at least 800 encounters, 350 adult and 150 pediatric among them.
The RN license that covers a Montana site
IWU asks for an RN license, active and unencumbered, in each state that hosts one of your practicum sites. Montana joined the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018; per the Board's RN page, a multistate license from another compact state is enough to practice there, with no Montana license needed. Questions IWU students ask
Must Montana's nursing board sign off on IWU before my NP clinicals start?
Graduate programs skip that step. The Board's FAQ lets graduate and RN-to-BSN programs hold Montana clinicals without Board approval, provided the student's license is valid in Montana. ARM 24.159.608, the placement rule, is aimed at out-of-state pre-licensure schools. IWU still vets and approves your site and preceptor through its own process.
Does my IWU clinical faculty member need a Montana nursing license?
Montana ties faculty licensure to hands-on care. The Board's FAQ exempts out-of-state instructors from Montana licensure when their role is limited to consulting with the student and the preceptor; one who treats patients in Montana would. Your preceptor, who does see Montana patients, must hold a license valid there.
Is Montana a state IWU refuses to admit NP students from?
IWU publishes no list of excluded states. Its September 2022 disclosures show Montana as meeting educational requirements for the NP programs they cover, and only the ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure lists Montana as not yet determined. Lists you may see on outside websites are not IWU policy, so confirm your program with IWU admissions.
Can an NP-owned clinic in Montana host my IWU FNP rotation?
It can be a strong fit, since Montana's full practice authority lets NPs run their own practices. IWU still approves every site and preceptor, and its FNP rotations focus on primary care across the lifespan, with some specialty hours allowed but most in primary care. Check the NP Clinical Guidelines for any preceptor criteria before you commit.
