Minnesota and Indiana Wesleyan NP clinicals
IWU's 2022 disclosures count Minnesota as "meets" across its NP tracks, and the state sets no approval step for IWU before you train there. The real hurdles are licensing, because Minnesota has stayed out of the Nurse Licensure Compact, and the rules of individual health systems, which can be stricter than state law.

IWU's disclosure status for Minnesota
IWU's online programs reach Minnesota through NC-SARA. Its professional licensure disclosures from September 2022, linked on the Student Consumer Information page, list Minnesota under "meets" for the MSN FNP and FNP certificate, the MSN PMHNP and PMHNP certificate, and BSN-to-DNP study in both specialties. IWU's ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure, dated June 2024, marks Minnesota "not yet determined". Double-check your program with IWU admissions before enrolling.

What Minnesota law says about visiting students
Minnesota's Board limits its program approvals to programs run in Minnesota, and its rules add no separate step for schools based in other states. Minn. R. 6305.0300 counts a program approved by its home state as "approved" for Minnesota purposes, with one string attached: whoever supervises the student on site must be a Minnesota-licensed, currently registered RN. Separately, Minn. Stat. 148.271(6) lets an RN licensed in another state practice in Minnesota without Minnesota licensure while enrolled in a structured program leading to a higher degree.
IWU's rule reaches further than that exemption: a practicum site in Minnesota means a Minnesota RN license for IWU purposes, active and unencumbered.
Site rules, the transition period and where to look
Big systems layer on their own conditions. Mayo Clinic, for instance, asks for three things before an NP student arrives: a signed affiliation agreement between Mayo and the school, a background study through Minnesota's Department of Human Services, and a Minnesota nursing license that is unencumbered and currently registered. It also wants faculty of record licensed in the state hosting the experience. That is site policy, stricter than statute, and a reminder to learn each site's terms before you bring it to IWU.
AANP puts Minnesota among the full-practice states, after a transition of 2,080 hours that a new NP spends collaborating with a physician or APRN. IWU's own bar for preceptors is set in the NP Clinical Guidelines; what IWU makes public about preceptors is summarized separately. MERC money goes to training sites, never to individual preceptors, and only when the teaching program is Minnesota-based, which leaves IWU placements outside it.

Plan on a Minnesota RN license
Minnesota has no compact bill pending, and an out-of-state multistate license does not authorize practice here. To satisfy IWU, get licensed and registered with the Minnesota Board before your first Minnesota clinical course, and keep that license unencumbered alongside any others you hold. Questions IWU students ask
Minnesota exempts out-of-state RNs who are students. Can I skip the Minnesota license?
Not for IWU. Minn. Stat. 148.271(6) does let an RN from another state practice as a graduate student without Minnesota licensure, but IWU expects a valid license in the state of each practicum site. Some Minnesota sites, Mayo Clinic among them, also insist on Minnesota licensure with current registration.
Can I do an IWU rotation at Mayo Clinic?
Mayo sets the terms, beginning with an affiliation agreement between Mayo and your school. Whether IWU has one is not stated in any public IWU source, so ask your program faculty before you approach a Mayo clinician. The Minnesota license and DHS background study are further steps on Mayo's list.
Will my preceptor's clinic receive MERC funds for training me?
No. The Minnesota Department of Health's MERC program partly repays sites for clinical training costs, but only when the program doing the teaching is based in Minnesota. IWU is an Indiana university, so its rotations do not generate MERC funding.
Can a Minnesota NP who is still in a collaborative agreement precept me?
That is IWU's call under the NP Clinical Guidelines. New Minnesota NPs collaborate with a physician or APRN for their first 2,080 hours and practice independently after that. Seasoned NPs and physicians tend to be easier approvals, so check with your program faculty first if the clinician is newer.
