Indiana Wesleyan nursing from Hawaii: licensing, preceptors and the islands
Yes, you can. IWU's September 2022 disclosures put its nurse practitioner programs in the "meets" column for Hawaii, and your clinicals happen on the island where you live. The Hawaii-specific catch is licensing: the state stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, so you train on a Hawaii-issued RN license.

Hawaii in IWU's licensure disclosures
IWU is an NC-SARA member, which covers its online teaching across state lines. Licensure is a separate question, answered by the PDFs on IWU's Student Consumer Information page. The 2022 set lists every NP track as meeting educational requirements in all 50 states and flags extra steps only for New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island, so Hawaii carries no added note. IWU's newer ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure, dated June 2024, is narrower and shows Hawaii as "not yet determined".

Preceptors, program rules and where island students search
AANP classes Hawaii as a full-practice state, so nurse practitioners there work without a mandated physician agreement. That widens your options: an FNP running a solo Maui practice can be as strong a candidate as a clinic physician, as long as IWU approves the pairing. The Hawaii Board of Nursing's program rules aim mainly at pre-licensure students. A 2016 decision by the Board's education committee turned away an out-of-state BSN program that wanted pre-licensure clinicals in Hawaii. Schools teaching already-licensed nurses from elsewhere, with no Hawaii campus, file no Board application and send no notice, according to its FAQ; the examples given are RN-BSN and LPN-RN, and graduate APRN study goes unmentioned. Faculty, the FAQ adds, need a Hawaii license only if they are physically teaching or precepting on the islands.
On Oahu, students usually begin with Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific Health (its hospitals include Straub, Kapiolani, Wilcox and Pali Momi) and The Queen's Health Systems; Hawaii Health Systems Corporation is the other name on most lists. Urban Honolulu holds close to a million people, while Kahului-Wailuku and Hilo-Kailua are far smaller, so independent practices matter off Oahu. Treat these as places students look, never as sites with an IWU arrangement.
Your RN license has to be a Hawaii license
IWU asks for a current, unencumbered RN license in whatever state hosts your practicum site. In Hawaii, that license comes from the Board of Nursing inside the DCCA Professional and Vocational Licensing Division. A multistate license issued in Idaho or Iowa carries no privilege here, and the compact map shows no pending Hawaii legislation. Moving to the islands mid-program? Plan the mainland trips as well. The FNP health-assessment residency takes place on IWU's campus in Marion, Indiana, and PMHNP students add two intensives, so book flights from Honolulu or Kahului around the course calendar.

Questions IWU students ask
I live off Oahu. Can my IWU clinicals stay on my island?
Yes. IWU describes its NP clinicals as taking place in the student's own community, so a Kahului-Wailuku or Hilo-Kailua address points your search there. The pool is smaller than Honolulu's, which is why independent NP and family practices deserve a close look. Each site and preceptor still goes through IWU's vetting and approval, and you need your Hawaii RN license in place first.
Does a multistate compact license let me train in Hawaii?
No. Hawaii is not a Nurse Licensure Compact jurisdiction, and a multistate license from Idaho, Iowa or elsewhere in the compact stops at its shoreline. IWU wants your RN license current and unencumbered wherever a practicum site sits, so for Hawaii rotations that means a license issued by the Hawaii Board of Nursing.
Can my preceptor claim Hawaii's tax credit for teaching me?
Probably not. The credit set up by HRS 235-110.25 is limited to students of academic programs that are Hawaii-accredited or Hawaii-based and whose enrollment is majority Hawaii resident. IWU is an Indiana university. A preceptor who wants a firm answer can read the credit's program FAQ, because the Hawaii Department of Health certifies which rotations count.
When should a Hawaii student begin the preceptor search?
Earlier than you think. IWU publishes no lead time, but its FNP certificate FAQ says clinical work starts early and advises lining preceptors up ahead. In Hawaii you may also need time for a state RN license, and island practices are fewer outside Honolulu. Your NP Clinical Guidelines and program faculty hold IWU's own submission timing.
