Indiana Wesleyan's online NP programs for North Carolina nurses
North Carolina RNs can enroll in IWU's nurse practitioner programs, which the September 2022 disclosures list as meeting the state's educational requirements. The North Carolina Board of Nursing has no jurisdiction over post-licensure graduate programs, so your planning centers on preceptors in a restricted-practice state and on the license you hold.

IWU's disclosures for North Carolina
IWU is an NC-SARA member, and North Carolina signed on to SARA in June 2016. Under IWU's September 2022 disclosures, the MSN FNP, MSN PMHNP, both NP post-master's certificates and the two BSN-to-DNP NP tracks meet North Carolina's educational requirements. The ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure from June 2024 names five Midwest states only and marks North Carolina "not yet determined". Verify your program with IWU admissions before enrolling.

Where NCBON's jurisdiction stops
North Carolina's rule for out-of-state students, 21 NCAC 36 .0233, covers unlicensed students in pre-licensure programs. For them, the North Carolina facility's top nurse executive, or an RN acting for that person, files the request with NCBON at least 30 days before the clinical begins, with evidence of home-board approval, a résumé and license for the coordinating faculty member, and confirmation that the preceptor is licensed as an RN in North Carolina.
Graduate study sits outside that system. In NCBON's own words, graduate programs for licensed nurses are not something it approves or rejects, wherever the school is based; RN-BSN, master's and doctoral programs all fall outside its authority. It also tells students at SARA colleges that they may qualify for North Carolina field placements. The single wrinkle: a graduate student licensed neither in North Carolina nor through a multistate license asks NCBON's Licensure Department what applies.
Restricted practice and the career-long physician agreement
AANP rates North Carolina restricted. An NP there works under a physician agreement for an entire career, and the nursing and medical boards oversee NP licensure together through a joint subcommittee. Every NP preceptor you meet will practice inside that arrangement, which is simply how NP care is organized in the state.

From Charlotte to the Triangle and the Triad
Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia counts about 2.48 million North Carolina residents, Raleigh-Cary about 1.6 million, Greensboro-High Point roughly 806,000 and Winston-Salem roughly 712,000. The systems NP students encounter are Atrium Health, now part of Advocate Health; Novant Health; UNC Health; Duke Health; and ECU Health in the east.
None of them is a standing placement for IWU students. They show where primary and psychiatric care concentrates, and county health departments, federally funded clinics and independent family practices fill in the map, especially for FNP students chasing IWU's pediatric and women's health encounter counts.

IWU checks that your RN license is active and unencumbered in the state of each practicum site. Both Carolinas started issuing multistate licenses on January 19, 2018, so one North Carolina multistate license serves a practice in either half of the Charlotte metro. Questions IWU students ask
Does NCBON have to approve my IWU NP clinicals in North Carolina?
No. NCBON treats graduate programs for licensed nurses as outside its approval authority, and 21 NCAC 36 .0233, the placement rule for out-of-state schools, concerns pre-licensure students. IWU's approval is the one that counts, since every site and preceptor you propose goes through it, and IWU's recent catalogs route those approvals through Medatrax.
Is a multistate license from another compact state enough for a North Carolina site?
Yes, as long as it is active and unencumbered. Multistate licenses from Indiana, Virginia and other compact members carry a North Carolina practice privilege. If you hold just one single-state license from a non-member state, NCBON's Licensure Department sets out what graduate students need before clinical work in North Carolina.
What does restricted practice mean for my North Carolina preceptor?
It means the NP works under a physician agreement that lasts an entire career, with the nursing and medical boards sharing oversight of NP licensure. The setup is universal for North Carolina NPs, so it is no reason to rule a preceptor out. IWU applies its own preceptor criteria, so confirm them before you ask.
I live near Charlotte. Can my IWU clinical be in South Carolina?
It can. Your license question is easy here, and IWU would still need to approve the practice. Both Carolinas joined the compact on January 19, 2018, so one North Carolina multistate license serves practices in both states. IWU expects clinicals in your own community, and a practice across the state line in the Charlotte metro can fit that.
