Taking IWU's online nursing programs from Iowa
IWU's 2022 disclosures list Iowa as a state where its NP programs meet educational requirements, and Iowa's compact membership means a multistate RN license carries you into clinicals. Iowa's Board sets a few conditions of its own for schools based elsewhere, and it gives your preceptor a small renewal benefit for teaching you.

Iowa at a glance in IWU's disclosures
IWU teaches Iowa residents online through its NC-SARA membership. For the licensure side, open the disclosure PDFs on IWU's Student Consumer Information page. Each NP track IWU reviewed in September 2022, from the MSN FNP and PMHNP to the two post-graduate certificates and both BSN-to-DNP options, shows Iowa as "meets". The outlier is the ASN-to-MSN FNP, whose June 2024 sheet leaves Iowa "not yet determined".

What Iowa asks of schools based in other states
Iowa's Board of Nursing, housed in the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing, leaves approval of an out-of-state school to that school's home board, yet its web page still lists conditions. The school clears its right to operate in Iowa with the Bureau of Iowa College Aid, follows Iowa law along with its home rules, and hands the Board data on request. Anyone teaching or precepting its students in Iowa holds an active Iowa or multistate license.
Clinical contracts have to name each party's duties, keep teaching decisions with the faculty, set a yearly review and spell out how either side can terminate. Those obligations belong to IWU, not to you. The Board also says preceptors are approved by the program and the clinical facility together, so expect two sign-offs: the Iowa clinic's onboarding and IWU's own vetting.
Choosing an ARNP or physician preceptor in Iowa
Iowa uses the title ARNP for nurse practitioners, and AANP ranks the state full practice. The Board's rule for ARNP preceptorships, 481 IAC 616.16, wants the bulk of a student's hours with an ARNP or physician whose role and population match the student's: family practice for FNP students, psychiatric care for PMHNP students. Preceptors must be licensed wherever they practice, and written preceptorship agreements get an annual review. For IWU's side, its published preceptor rules point to the NP Clinical Guidelines.
Teaching you helps the preceptor too: Iowa lets a nurse claim 6 contact hours of renewal credit after supervising a student for 60 hours or longer in a structured program, as long as the school documents it. Students commonly begin with UnityPoint Health, MercyOne and University of Iowa Health Care, across Des Moines-West Des Moines (about 759,000 residents), Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Those are search starting points, not IWU partners.
Compact licensing, with one border catch
Iowa has taken part in the Nurse Licensure Compact since its January 2018 rollout, so whether your multistate license was issued by Iowa or by the compact state you live in, it covers the license IWU requires at each practicum site, provided it stays active and unencumbered. Iowa Code 152.1 exempts unlicensed students only; an RN in graduate school practices on the license itself. Mind the Quad Cities: the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro reaches into Illinois, a non-compact state, so a site across the river calls for an Illinois license as well. Questions IWU students ask
Does an Iowa preceptor get anything for teaching an IWU student?
Yes, toward license renewal. Iowa's continuing-education rule turns a preceptorship of 60 hours or more into 6 contact hours of renewal credit, documented by the school. Ask IWU faculty how they provide that documentation, and mention the benefit when you first approach a nurse practitioner.
I live in Davenport. Can my clinical site be in Moline or Rock Island?
Possibly, but those cities are in Illinois, which sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. IWU requires a license in the state of every practicum site, which means holding an Illinois RN license as well, and Illinois applies its own rule to schools placing students from elsewhere. Does my Iowa preceptor have to be an ARNP, or can a physician do it?
Either can qualify. Iowa's rule asks that most of your preceptorship be with an ARNP or physician in your role and population focus, so a family physician can teach an FNP student and a psychiatrist can teach a PMHNP student. IWU still vets and approves each preceptor against its own criteria.
Does the Iowa Board have to approve IWU before my clinicals begin?
No Board approval applies to programs based outside Iowa. The Board instead sets conditions on the school, such as authorization through the Bureau of Iowa College Aid and properly written clinical contracts. Those are IWU's responsibilities; if a clinic asks about them, point it to your program faculty.
