Training in Texas as an IWU nurse practitioner student
IWU's 2022 disclosures treat Texas as a meets state for its NP programs, and IWU's catalog names the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board among its approvals. The Texas Board of Nursing's out-of-state approval process is built for pre-licensure programs, so NP students mostly contend with physician delegation and with who may precept.

Texas in IWU's disclosure table
IWU belongs to NC-SARA and lists the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board among its state approvals. Its disclosures of September 30, 2022 record Texas as meeting educational requirements for the MSN FNP and PMHNP, the post-master's FNP and PMHNP certificates, and both BSN-to-DNP specialties. The June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure calls Texas not yet determined. IWU publishes no excluded-state list, so check your exact program with IWU admissions.

Texas BON approval stops at pre-licensure
Rules 22 TAC 214.3(e) and 215.3(e), read with Education Guideline 3.1.3 as revised May 1, 2026, make an out-of-state school obtain Texas BON approval before any clinical learning in Texas when it prepares vocational or professional nurses for a first license, whether diploma, associate, baccalaureate or entry-level master's, NC-SARA or not. RN-to-BSN and graduate APRN education fall outside those rules, and that is where IWU's NP tracks sit. Chapter 219 separately covers APRN programs that ask for Texas BON approval, and it leaves nationally accredited programs alone.
Delegation, protocols and who precepts in Texas
AANP puts Texas in the restricted category. NPs there practice under physician delegation and supervision, keep protocols in writing with a physician across the entire career, and work within setting limits on Schedule II prescribing. An NP preceptor in Texas is therefore always part of a delegation arrangement.
Under 22 TAC 219.10, preceptors for APRN students may be licensed APRNs or other currently licensed health care professionals able to supervise and teach, with written agreements among program, preceptor and agency, and faculty generally overseeing no more than six students per clinical course. IWU sets its own criteria in the NP Clinical Guidelines and approves each preceptor; preceptor requirements explains what to prepare.
Preceptor incentives aimed at other students
The Exemption Program for Clinical Preceptors and Their Children (Tex. Educ. Code 54.356) trims tuition at public Texas colleges for Texas-resident RN preceptors in public programs that lead to initial RN licensure, so graduate NP preceptors are outside it. THECB's grant pages show neither a tax credit for preceptors nor a grant for NP preceptors; its Statewide Preceptorship Program serves medical students with physician preceptors, and the Nursing Shortage Reduction Program funds Texas institutions rather than individual clinicians. When you approach a Texas preceptor, the case rests on the teaching itself.
Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington (roughly 8.48 million residents) and Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands (nearly 7.9 million) dwarf the rest, with San Antonio-New Braunfels near 2.81 million and Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos near 2.62 million. Houston Methodist, University Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center are names NP students weigh, as are Baylor Scott & White Health and Texas Health Resources. They mark where care concentrates, not sites committed to IWU students. In a state this size, a clinic twenty minutes from home usually serves you better than a famous name two hours away.
RN licensing for Texas rotations
Under IWU's rules, every practicum state has to be covered by an active, unencumbered RN license. Texas has issued multistate licenses under the NLC since January 19, 2018, and either a Texas multistate license or one from the compact state you call home works for Texas rotations. The APRN Compact is not law in Texas. RN license for clinicals covers holding licenses in several states.

Questions IWU students ask
Does IWU need Texas Board of Nursing approval for my NP clinicals?
The Texas out-of-state approval requirement in Rules 214 and 215 covers pre-licensure programs, not graduate APRN programs. Chapter 219 applies to APRN programs that choose to seek Texas approval, while nationally accredited programs fall beyond it; IWU's graduate nursing programs hold CCNE accreditation. Confirm any site-specific expectations with your program faculty.
Can a physician precept me in Texas instead of an NP?
Texas APRN program standards allow preceptors who are licensed APRNs or other currently licensed health care professionals able to supervise and teach, which can include physicians. IWU's own standard, written into its NP Clinical Guidelines, decides the matter, and no hours count until IWU approves the preceptor.
Is there a Texas incentive I can mention to a prospective preceptor?
Not one that applies to IWU students. Texas's preceptor tuition exemption covers RNs precepting students in public programs leading to initial RN licensure, and no state tax credit for NP preceptors was found. Emphasize the teaching partnership and how your course's schedule fits the clinic.
Can I keep my Texas RN license if I train at a Texas site while living elsewhere?
What IWU checks is an active, unencumbered license valid where the site is, so a current Texas license covers Texas clinicals. Whether your license is multistate depends on your primary state of residence, so if you have moved, confirm your status with the Texas BON before your course starts.
