New Jersey RNs can take IWU's online nurse practitioner programs: the September 2022 disclosures list the state as meeting educational requirements. On the clinical side, joint protocols shape who precepts you, the Board's regulations set no filing for out-of-state programs in our research, and a compact license covers New Jersey and Pennsylvania but not New York.

New Jersey in IWU's licensure disclosures
Indiana Wesleyan participates in NC-SARA. For New Jersey, its September 2022 disclosures show "meets" across FNP and PMHNP study at every level: MSN, post-master's certificate and BSN-to-DNP. The June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure has reached no finding for New Jersey and calls it "not yet determined". IWU posts no list of states it declines, so admissions is where you confirm your program.

Joint protocols and who precepts you
AANP classes New Jersey as reduced practice: ordering medications and devices requires an NP to hold joint protocols with a collaborating physician. Most NP preceptors you meet will work under such an agreement, which is ordinary in this state and no obstacle to teaching.

What New Jersey's rules say about out-of-state programs
In our review of New Jersey's nursing regulations, nothing obliges an out-of-state program to secure approval, or even file a notice, before its students begin at a site in the state. N.J.A.C. 13:37's opening subchapter addresses programs at institutions that hold licensure through New Jersey's Commission on Higher Education, while section 13:37-1.10(c) handles the reverse case of New Jersey programs sending students to agencies elsewhere.
The Board's own website sat behind a security check when researched, so any guidance posted there went unreviewed. Ask your IWU program faculty whether IWU keeps anything on file for New Jersey; clinicals outside Indiana covers the general approach.
North Jersey, South Jersey and the shore
About 7.1 million New Jerseyans live within the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro, and roughly 1.4 million within the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington one; Trenton-Princeton holds roughly 399,000 and the Atlantic City-Hammonton area about 372,000. Hackensack Meridian Health, RWJBarnabas Health, Virtua Health, Atlantic Health System and Camden's Cooper University Health Care count as large systems here.
They show where outpatient primary and behavioral care is dense. Each system decides for itself about students, and IWU approves whatever site you propose, so private family and psychiatric practices deserve equal attention.
Licensing across three states
Whatever state a practicum site sits in, IWU wants your RN license there active and unencumbered. New Jersey has issued multistate licenses since November 15, 2021, and Pennsylvania joined on July 7, 2025, so a New Jersey multistate license reaches a Philadelphia practice as well.
New York is the exception. It stays outside the compact, and NYSED requires out-of-state NP programs to be registered before their students rotate there, so a clinic across the Hudson is a separate project. See our New York guide and RN license for clinicals.

Questions IWU students ask
Must IWU register with New Jersey before my NP clinicals?
Nothing in New Jersey's nursing rules that we reviewed calls for it. N.J.A.C. 13:37 addresses programs run by New Jersey institutions, and the Board's website could not be checked for posted guidance. IWU's own process still governs: it vets and approves your site and preceptor, so ask your program faculty whether New Jersey needs anything extra.
Can I live in South Jersey and train in Philadelphia?
Yes, if IWU approves the site and your license reaches Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania implemented the compact on July 7, 2025, so a New Jersey multistate license covers it. Pennsylvania also lets RNs licensed elsewhere complete required graduate clinicals under 49 Pa. Code 21.118. Clinicals are meant to happen in your own community, and a South Jersey-to-Philadelphia commute can fit that.
Why does my New Jersey preceptor mention a collaborating physician?
New Jersey NPs order drugs and devices under joint protocols they share with a collaborating physician, which is why AANP rates the state reduced practice. It is a standard arrangement and does not stop an NP from precepting. Mention the protocol arrangement when you submit the practice for IWU's review.
Can a New Jersey resident enter IWU's ASN-to-MSN FNP?
IWU's June 2024 disclosure for that route lists New Jersey as not yet determined, meaning IWU has not confirmed whether the curriculum meets New Jersey's licensure requirements. That is not a refusal. Ask IWU admissions for the current position, and compare the MSN FNP, which the 2022 disclosure lists as meeting New Jersey requirements.
