IWU clinicals for Connecticut nurses
Connecticut changed the licensing picture for distance students on October 1, 2025, when it began accepting multistate RN licenses. Its education regulations speak mainly to programs that prepare nurses for first licensure, so an IWU graduate student's real work here is the preceptor search and IWU's own approval.

IWU's disclosures, applied to Connecticut
IWU belongs to NC-SARA, and in September 2022 it issued licensure disclosures for its master's and certificate NP options and for the BSN-to-DNP FNP and PMHNP. Each lists Connecticut on the 'meets' side, as it does the rest of the country. Its ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure from June 2024 limits 'meets' to Indiana and four neighbors and leaves Connecticut 'not yet determined.'

Connecticut's clinical education rules and graduate programs
Connecticut's nursing regulator is the Board of Examiners for Nursing, housed in the Department of Public Health. Section 20-90-59 of the state's regulations treats a nursing program from elsewhere as 'deemed approved' when three things line up: approval from its own state board, a curriculum that satisfies Connecticut's RN curriculum rule, and home-state licensure standards at least as demanding as Connecticut's. The regulations describe no extra Connecticut filing.
Sections 20-90-48(a)(2) and (b) add ratio and written-contract rules for out-of-state programs using Connecticut agencies, and require on-site clinical faculty to hold a Connecticut RN license, both bachelor's and master's degrees with at least one in nursing, and clinical experience in the area they teach. The ratios are listed below. All of this sits under 20-90-46, which covers programs preparing graduates for licensure, and the regulations do not address post-licensure or APRN programs such as IWU's.

- one clinical faculty member for every 10 students giving direct client care
- one preceptor for every two students
- one faculty member for every 16 precepted students, with faculty still responsible for evaluation

Preceptors and Connecticut's route to full practice
Connecticut is full practice in AANP's terms, but only after a transition: an NP first collaborates with a physician for a minimum of three years and 2,000 hours. Under 20-90-51(f), anyone precepting advanced-level students in an RN education program needs a current RN license from Connecticut or from the state hosting the precepting, a nursing bachelor's degree, and at least two years in that role or specialty. Hartford's metro of about 1.17 million, home to Hartford HealthCare and UConn Health, is the largest. Along the coast, New Haven has Yale New Haven Health and the Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury area has about 978,000 people, where Danbury Hospital, one of the former Nuvance hospitals, now belongs to New York-based Northwell Health. Trinity Health Of New England and the Waterbury-Shelton area round out the list. Treat each as a place to ask, not an IWU partner.
The compact arrived in October 2025
Connecticut's Department of Public Health confirms that compact participation began October 1, 2025. Since then a Connecticut RN license works for clinicals there, and so does a multistate license issued where you live, if home is another compact state. Does my out-of-state compact license work for IWU hours in Connecticut now?
Yes, from October 1, 2025. Connecticut now takes part in the compact, so the multistate license your home state issued carries a privilege to practice in Connecticut, and that satisfies IWU's license rule. Connecticut residents hold a Connecticut license instead; either way, keep it active and unencumbered.
Does Connecticut require IWU to apply before I train in the state?
The regulations reviewed describe out-of-state programs as 'deemed approved' when conditions are met, and they apply to programs that prepare graduates for licensure rather than post-licensure or APRN programs. No separate filing is described for a program like IWU's. Ask your faculty to confirm before you finalize a site.
How many IWU students can one Connecticut preceptor take?
Connecticut's 20-90-48 sets one preceptor for every two students, but that section covers programs preparing nurses for licensure. For IWU's graduate courses the number comes from IWU's own NP Clinical Guidelines and your faculty. Plan your search as if you need a preceptor to yourself until faculty say otherwise.
Can a newer NP precept me in Connecticut?
Independent practice in Connecticut follows a collaborative period of three years and 2,000 hours, and the state's rule for preceptors of advanced-level RN students calls for two or more years in the role. IWU's criteria decide who qualifies for your course, so check its NP Clinical Guidelines before asking.
