IWU's North Dakota disclosure in brief
Indiana Wesleyan is an NC-SARA member. Its September 2022 disclosures put North Dakota in the "meets" column for the MSN FNP and MSN PMHNP, the FNP and PMHNP certificates for post-master's nurses, and both BSN-to-DNP specialties, while the June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure lists it as "not yet determined". IWU publishes no list of states it won't admit from, so its admissions team is the one to confirm your program.

NDBON recognition reaches APRN programs
Programs leading to APRN licensure count, alongside LPN and RN ones, under NDBON's distance nursing education guidelines, so an NP program sending students into North Dakota facilities is covered. The request for recognition is due 60 days before planned student activity, with an annual fee set for graduate programs. Under NDCC 43-12.1-04(12), a student in an out-of-state program the Board recognizes may practice as part of that program after written notification, depending on clinical site availability.
Recognition brings semester reports filed ahead of any student activity. They name the students and their North Dakota or compact licenses, the facilities and courses, and the preceptors and faculty with résumés and licenses attached, plus affiliation agreements and a note from each facility confirming it has room. NDBON keeps a 2026-2027 list of recognized distance programs, so look for IWU there and ask your program faculty how North Dakota placements work.
Full practice, and an APRN Compact state
AANP rates North Dakota full practice, meaning NPs there work without a physician agreement. The state has also enacted the APRN Compact, as have Delaware, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming; it takes effect only when seven states are on board, so for now it changes nothing about student clinicals.

Fargo, Bismarck, Minot and Grand Forks
Fargo's metro counts roughly 202,000 North Dakotans; Bismarck follows at 140,000, then Minot at 76,000 and Grand Forks at 75,000. Sanford Health runs Sanford Broadway Medical Center in Fargo and Sanford Medical Center Bismarck, while CHI St. Alexius Health (Bismarck, part of CommonSpirit Health), Trinity Health of Minot, Altru Health System in Grand Forks and Essentia Health-Fargo round out the list. They show where NP care concentrates, not where IWU students hold a slot.
Your license, and the Minnesota side of the river
Per IWU's catalog, each state hosting one of your practicum sites must be covered by an active, unencumbered RN license. North Dakota's compact participation dates from January 19, 2018, and NDBON's semester reports accept a North Dakota or compact license. Minnesota is outside the compact, so a practice in the Minnesota half of the Fargo or Grand Forks metro calls for a Minnesota license. See RN license for clinicals and our Minnesota guide.

Does NDBON have to recognize IWU before my NP clinicals in North Dakota?
NDBON's guidelines cover distance programs leading to APRN licensure, and they ask for a recognition request 60 days before students begin, followed by reports every semester. Check NDBON's 2026-2027 list of recognized programs for IWU, and ask your program faculty how IWU handles North Dakota before you secure a site.
What does North Dakota collect about my preceptor?
Every semester, a recognized program tells NDBON who is precepting and who is teaching, with résumés and North Dakota or compact licenses, and adds the facilities, courses, affiliation agreements and each site's word that it has room for students. IWU, as the program, handles that reporting. Having your preceptor's résumé and license details ready makes every step smoother.
I live in Fargo. Can my IWU clinical be across the river in Minnesota?
Only with a Minnesota RN license. Minnesota sits outside the compact, which leaves a North Dakota multistate license without effect there, and IWU requires an active, unencumbered license in each state that hosts a practicum site. IWU also approves every site, so confirm a cross-river option with faculty first.
Will the APRN Compact change anything for me as a student?
Not yet. North Dakota has enacted the APRN Compact, but it becomes operational only after seven states join, and so far five have. Even then it concerns APRN licenses rather than student clinicals. For IWU practicum work, today's test is simpler: your RN license must be active, unencumbered and good in the state of the site.
