How IWU's disclosures treat South Dakota
IWU takes part in NC-SARA, and every NP disclosure it dated September 30, 2022 lists South Dakota as meeting educational requirements: both MSN specialties, the FNP and PMHNP certificates for nurses who already hold a master's, and the BSN-to-DNP in either track. Its June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP document marks South Dakota not yet determined, like every state outside Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. IWU publishes no list of states it turns away; confirm your track with admissions.

No Board approval, but a faculty expectation
There is no South Dakota Board approval step for out-of-state schools. Its guidance for them, revised in June 2020, treats a clinical placement in a South Dakota direct-care setting as a deal struck between the school and the local agency or preceptor. What the Board does look for is someone on the program's faculty with a South Dakota license or the multistate privilege; when the students are APRN students, that person needs South Dakota APRN authority. ARSD 20:48:07:49, the distance-education rule, applies the same test to instructors of APRN students who are physically in South Dakota.

Full practice after 1,040 hours, and who can precept you
AANP counts South Dakota as full practice, with a transition built in. Newly licensed NPs log 1,040 practice hours with a written collaborative agreement in place first, and the collaborator can be a physician, a nurse midwife holding certification, or a certified NP. Your preceptor might be long independent or still inside that window. ARSD 20:48:07:34, written for Board-approved programs, sets a license floor for preceptors (the level the student is preparing for, or higher) and asks that an APRN preceptor's role, focus or specialty be close to the student's.

Sioux Falls, Rapid City and the miles between
Around 305,000 South Dakotans live in the Sioux Falls metro, which also reaches into Minnesota. Rapid City's metro holds roughly 157,000 people and the Aberdeen micropolitan area about 42,000. Avera Health and Sanford Health, plus Monument Health, are the systems NP students here tend to know. The names locate care rather than promise an IWU placement; in a largely rural state, clinics in smaller towns and your own employer deserve a look too.
Licenses and compacts for South Dakota clinicals
IWU wants an active, unencumbered RN license for every state where one of your practicum sites sits. South Dakota's compact implementation date is January 19, 2018, per NCSBN, which means a South Dakota RN license, or the multistate license issued by whichever compact state you live in, is enough for clinicals here. The APRN Compact became South Dakota law with a signature on February 5, 2024; Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota and Delaware have enacted it too, and it switches on only when a seventh state joins. Does IWU need South Dakota Board approval before I train there?
No approval step exists for out-of-state schools in South Dakota; the placement is settled between the school and the local preceptor or agency. The Board's one expectation is a faculty member with South Dakota APRN authority overseeing APRN students in the state, so ask your program faculty how IWU covers it.
My would-be preceptor is a new NP still working with a collaborator. Is that a problem in South Dakota?
The Board's preceptor standards for its approved programs focus on license level and a comparable role or specialty, not on the transition period. Will IWU's clinical hours satisfy South Dakota's APRN licensing rule?
For APRN licensure the graduate program has to supply at least 500 clinical hours matched to role and population, along with graduate study of pathophysiology, pharmacology and assessment. IWU's catalog lists 850 hours for the MSN FNP and 820 for the PMHNP, so the hour count is well covered. Keep your transcript and hour records in order.
Does South Dakota's APRN Compact membership help me yet?
Not yet. South Dakota enacted the compact in February 2024, but it starts operating only after seven states have joined, and five had by 2026. Until then, a South Dakota APRN license authorizes practice in South Dakota alone, and each other state needs its own application.
