How IWU's disclosures treat New Mexico
IWU, an NC-SARA institution, published licensure disclosures on September 30, 2022 that mark New Mexico "meets" for its MSN FNP and PMHNP, the two post-master's NP certificates and the BSN-to-DNP in either specialty. The ASN-to-MSN FNP differs: its June 2024 disclosure covers five Midwest states and leaves New Mexico "not yet determined". Settle your program with IWU admissions before enrolling.

The one-semester trigger in 16.12.3.11 NMAC
Section 16.12.3.11(A)(2) of the New Mexico code ties Board placement approval to duration: once a program's clinical or field work in the state spans more than a single semester, the program must apply, and schools approved elsewhere are held to New Mexico's minimum program standards. The part as a whole speaks to programs that prepare people for New Mexico licensure, with no separate language on RN-to-BSN or NP education.

Who counts as a preceptor under New Mexico's rules
New Mexico's education rules set a floor for preceptors: two or more years as a nurse, and a license at the student's target level or higher. For an IWU NP student, that points to a licensed nurse practitioner with at least two years in nursing. New Mexico NPs practice independently under AANP's full-practice rating, so NP-led clinics outside the hospital systems are realistic options, especially in rural counties.
Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington
Albuquerque's metro holds about 925,000 people, followed by Las Cruces at 229,000, Santa Fe at 157,000 and Farmington at 120,000. UNM Health System (New Mexico's sole academic medical center), Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Lovelace Health System are the large names, and CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center anchors Santa Fe. They mark where care concentrates rather than spots reserved for IWU students.
FNP students outside the big metros should confirm that a practice sees enough children to reach IWU's 150 pediatric encounters, since a mostly adult panel can leave that count short late in the program.
Compact licensing for New Mexico sites
IWU's rule is simple: hold an active, unencumbered RN license for every state where you complete practicum hours. New Mexico's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018, so a multistate license from Arizona, Colorado or Texas covers a New Mexico clinic; NMBON has charged a separate multistate license fee since June 1, 2026. Does IWU need New Mexico Board approval for my NP clinicals?
The answer turns on how the Board applies 16.12.3.11 NMAC to graduate study. That section calls for placement approval once a program's New Mexico clinical work spans beyond a single semester, yet the surrounding part is written around programs leading to New Mexico licensure. IWU decides how it handles this, so check with your program faculty before securing a site.
Can a newly certified NP precept me in New Mexico?
Under the Board's definition, possibly. It asks for two or more years of nursing experience, not two years as an NP, plus a license at or above the student's target level, so a new NP with a solid RN history can meet it. IWU's own criteria in the NP Clinical Guidelines may be stricter, and IWU approves each preceptor, so check those too.
Will my Texas multistate license cover a clinic in Las Cruces?
Yes. Both states are compact members, so a Texas multistate license carries a privilege to practice in New Mexico, which satisfies IWU's license rule for that site. IWU still approves the site, and it expects clinicals in your own community, so the clinic should be within reach of where you live.
Is New Mexico on a list of states IWU won't accept NP students from?
IWU publishes no such list. Its September 2022 disclosures show New Mexico meeting educational requirements for the MSN FNP, MSN PMHNP, both NP certificates and the BSN-to-DNP tracks. Excluded-state lists on outside websites are not IWU policy. Confirm your program with IWU admissions, especially if you are considering the ASN-to-MSN FNP.
