IWU nurse practitioner clinicals in Arizona
Arizona lets you train on a multistate RN license and gives NPs full practice authority, which widens the pool of possible preceptors. The catch lies with the Board of Nursing in Phoenix, which expects a school based in another state to hold its approval before students begin Arizona clinical hours.

What IWU's disclosures mean for an Arizona address
As an NC-SARA participant, IWU published professional licensure disclosures in September 2022 covering each NP route it offers at master's, certificate and BSN-to-DNP level, and every one of them lists Arizona with the rest of the 50 states as meeting educational requirements. The June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure is narrower, with Arizona still marked 'not yet determined.'

AZBN approval comes before Arizona clinical hours
The Arizona State Board of Nursing oversees two kinds of programs, pre-licensure and APRN. A Board advisory opinion, last revised in November 2020, makes approval a precondition: a nurse practitioner program headquartered in another state files with AZBN and waits for a yes before its first student logs an Arizona clinical hour. Schools get a lighter, streamlined look when the particular APRN track already holds approval from their home state's board and their national accreditation is current. IWU's master's, DNP and post-graduate APRN certificate programs are CCNE-accredited.
An approved program then has to monitor:
- licenses held by its director, its faculty, its preceptors and its students
- each Arizona placement, student by student
- figures the Board requests for its yearly survey or an audit
IWU makes that application, not you. Before you sign up a preceptor, ask program faculty to confirm your track is on file with AZBN; clinicals outside Indiana lists more questions worth raising.
Preceptors in a full-practice state
AANP counts Arizona among the full-practice states, so NPs there work without any physician agreement and independent NP clinics sit alongside hospital groups in your search. For preceptors the Board's opinion is specific. NP preceptors must carry Arizona APRN certification on top of a clear RN license, Arizona-issued or multistate, while MD and DO preceptors need a clean Arizona medical license. An NP friend licensed only elsewhere cannot precept you here.
Roughly 5.2 million people live in the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro. Search lists there usually include Banner Health, whose Banner - University Medicine arm runs academic centers, as well as Mayo Clinic in Arizona, HonorHealth out of Scottsdale and Phoenix Children's. Around Tucson, a metro of about 1.1 million, TMC Health is the name students know, while the Lake Havasu City-Kingman area and Prescott Valley-Prescott are much smaller markets. Treat all of these as starting points, not pre-arranged IWU sites.
A.R.S. 36-1806 created a grant for unpaid preceptors who teach graduate students, APRN students included, with rural primary care first in line and the Department of Health Services in charge. According to the JLBC's FY 2027 report, nothing was appropriated for FY 2026 or FY 2027, so expect it to be dormant.
Your RN license for Arizona training
Arizona has recognized multistate licenses since January 19, 2018. Under the advisory opinion, APRN students of out-of-state programs train on either an Arizona RN license or a multistate one, unencumbered either way. IWU adds its own condition: an active, unencumbered RN license for every state that hosts one of your practicum sites. Questions IWU students ask
Does IWU have AZBN approval for NP clinicals in Arizona?
IWU's public pages are silent on an Arizona filing. Because the Board wants approval in place before any clinical hour, and the school is the applicant, put the question to program faculty or admissions early, ideally before you promise a preceptor a start date.
Can an NP licensed only in California precept me in Arizona?
Under AZBN's advisory opinion, no. Arizona wants its NP preceptors certified as APRNs by Arizona itself, on top of a clear RN license from Arizona or a compact state. California sits outside the compact, so that NP would need Arizona credentials first. IWU's own preceptor rules in its NP Clinical Guidelines apply as well.
Will an Arizona preceptor get paid through the state grant program?
Probably not now. The Arizona Preceptor Grant Program for Graduate Students was funded for FY 2023 to FY 2025, and the JLBC's FY 2027 report shows nothing for the two years after, with leftover money reverting on June 30, 2026. Check with ADHS if a preceptor asks.
Can I do IWU clinicals in Prescott or Lake Havasu City instead of Phoenix?
IWU asks that clinicals happen in your own community, so a smaller Arizona market is fine if that is where you live and the site and preceptor pass IWU's approval. Fewer practices means a smaller pool, so start earlier than a Phoenix student would.
