Taking IWU's NP program from California
The Golden State sets two gates before an out-of-state NP student logs clinical hours. The BRN has to approve the school's program first, and you need a license issued by California itself, since multistate licenses carry no weight here. Confirm both before enrolling, then begin the preceptor hunt early.

California in IWU's disclosures
IWU, an NC-SARA school, dated its NP licensure disclosures September 2022, and they list California among the 50 states where the MSN FNP, MSN PMHNP, the NP certificates and the BSN-to-DNP NP routes meet educational requirements. The June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure has California as 'not yet determined.' A 'meets' finding on curriculum is separate from the BRN's clinical approval described below.

BRN prior approval under 16 CCR 1486
Under 16 CCR 1486, a school from another state gets the Board's approval in advance of any California clinical placement for its NP students. To earn it, the school follows NONPF and AACN standards, picks preceptors who meet BRN requirements, and builds California law into its teaching: BPC 2835.7, BPC 2836.1 and the rules on standardized procedures.

On its website the BRN posts the out-of-state NP programs it has cleared, school by school and track by track. Find Indiana Wesleyan and your own track there, and get admissions to confirm in writing, before you enroll from a California address.
Without BRN approval for your IWU track, California clinical hours are off the table, so settle this before you pay a deposit.
Who can precept you in California
California is one of AANP's restricted-practice states: some settings and procedures require an NP to practice under a standardized protocol agreement, and the BRN recognizes certain exemptions. Section 1486 then sets the preceptor bar at a current California license in the preceptor's own discipline plus qualification in the NP population you are training for. The school orients each preceptor, faculty review them at intervals of no more than two years, and a three-way written agreement between agency, preceptor and school defines the role. Greater Los Angeles alone holds roughly 12.8 million people, while the Inland Empire, the Bay Area and San Diego each add more than three million. Among the systems students approach are Cedars-Sinai, Stanford Health Care, Sutter Health in the north and Central Valley, Kaiser Permanente with its two California regions, and the six University of California health systems (UCLA, UCSF, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UCI and UCR). Think of them as doors to knock on rather than arranged IWU sites.
A California RN license comes first
Multistate licenses stop at California's border: the state is outside the NLC, with no bill pending to join. For students of an NP program based elsewhere, 1486(d) demands a California RN license that is active and valid. Holding one also takes care of IWU's rule that your RN license be active and unencumbered in each state with a practicum site. Questions IWU students ask
Is IWU on the BRN's list of approved out-of-state NP programs?
The BRN's list names each approved school and the tracks it covers. Search it for Indiana Wesleyan and your track, then have IWU admissions confirm in writing. The 2022 curriculum disclosure answers a different question and does not by itself clear you for California clinical hours.
My multistate license comes from Arizona. Can I train in California on it?
It will not work. California sits outside the compact, and section 1486(d) spells out a California RN license, active and valid, for students of out-of-state NP programs. Apply early; IWU likewise wants a license active in whichever state hosts each practicum site.
What paperwork does a California preceptor sign?
Expect a written agreement that the clinical agency, the preceptor and the school all sign, describing what the preceptor does. Separately, the school files an NP Program Preceptor form on each California preceptor. IWU may use its own documents too, so ask faculty which ones apply to your course.
Does IWU teach California NP law?
BRN-approved out-of-state programs must cover it, meaning the standardized procedure rules plus BPC 2835.7 and 2836.1. IWU's FNP certificate page describes content built around Indiana scope of practice, so ask your faculty how the California material reaches you and whether extra reading is expected.
