Where Alaska sits in IWU's disclosures
The September 2022 disclosures IWU posts as an NC-SARA school say its MSN FNP, MSN PMHNP, the two NP certificates and the doctoral BSN-to-DNP options for FNP and PMHNP meet educational requirements in every state, Alaska among them. One wrinkle: older 2020 BSN-to-DNP disclosures still sit on the same IWU page and list only Indiana and four nearby states, with Alaska 'not yet determined.' Ask admissions which version governs before you commit.

Registering yourself before APRN hours in Alaska
APRN students from programs outside Alaska are told by the Alaska Board of Nursing FAQ to seek a preceptorship through the Board. Under 12 AAC 44.460 this is a registration for you personally rather than an approval of IWU, and it runs through form 08-4253 with a non-refundable fee.

An agreement signed by all four parties is the piece students chase last; start it as soon as a preceptor says yes.
Who precepts NP students in Alaska
In AANP's classification Alaska NPs hold full practice authority, with no physician agreement needed to run a practice. The Board's registration form pictures your preceptor this way: an APRN or physician, current and clear on license or privilege to practice, working in a focus like yours, who oversees, coaches and grades what you do at the site. IWU's own criteria live in its NP Clinical Guidelines, so check both.
Most searches start in the Anchorage metro, home to roughly 406,000 people. Its big names are Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Regional Hospital (part of HCA) and ANMC, the tribal Alaska Native Medical Center. Palmer has Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. Up in Fairbanks, Foundation Health Partners operates both the Fairbanks Memorial hospital and Tanana Valley Clinic, while the capital, Juneau, counts about 32,000 residents in its micropolitan area. None of these is a site promised to IWU.
Why a compact license stops at Alaska's border
Alaska stays outside the NLC. Bills to join, HB 131 and SB 124, appear on the Board's compact page as still pending for the 2025-2026 legislature, yet a multistate license from Texas or Tennessee gives you no privilege to practice in Alaska today. IWU's catalog requires your RN license to be active and unencumbered wherever a practicum site sits, and here only an Alaska RN license does the job.

Questions IWU students ask
My multistate license is from Texas. Does it cover IWU clinicals in Alaska?
No. Because Alaska never entered the compact, an out-of-state multistate license brings no practice privilege with it. IWU needs your license valid where each practicum site sits, which in Alaska means holding an Alaska RN license. Confirm the timing with your faculty before your first clinical course.
Who submits the Alaska APRN preceptorship registration, me or IWU?
You do. Alaska's Board frames it as an individual student registration on form 08-4253, not a program approval. IWU's part is the enrollment proof and its signature on the preceptorship agreement, so ask your faculty how IWU handles that document before your preceptor signs.
What if my IWU clinical sequence runs longer than a year in Alaska?
The registration lasts 12 months or until the preceptorship ends, whichever arrives first, and one renewal is allowed. A long FNP sequence of several clinical courses may bump into that limit. Ask the Board how a new preceptor or site affects your registration before you change either.
Can a physician precept me in Alaska?
Alaska's form accepts a licensed physician or APRN with a comparable practice focus. Which preceptor types IWU accepts is set in its NP Clinical Guidelines rather than on public pages. Check that document or ask program faculty before you approach a physician practice.
